Re:Ask HN: What Makes Tokens Expensive? on Friday September 18, 2026 @10:46AM (#49755164)
I created a model for music production that doesn't require AI at all. It is algebraic by nature. This means determinism & creativity are first class citizens.

https://monictheory.com/developer-api

I devised an algebraic representation of music composition. This enables me to mass produce musical scores without ever touching artificial intelligence.

It took me 10 years to develop the system, and I intend to ride it out as much as I can. By act 3 of my life sure I will publish the math. But in this economy, I would be a damn fool to publish my equations just to let the LLMs write better music.

Don't want the AI label on your productions? Then use Monic Theory. We generate music without AI.

much love for the Just Intonation in the house

love that video, it made me lol so hard the first time I saw it :D

Classical composer and software engineer here. One of my goals is to help update score notation. I use something called "harmonic coloring" which is like a reduced MIDI notation: You color a note by its functional role (harmonic value) rather than an arbitrary hue in 0-11.

What this view shares with MIDI: Long rectangles representing the applied durations. How it is different: Occupies a minimal amount vertical space.

The color palette I'm using is intended to support people with colorblindness. The shades/hues of a color encodes the functional harmony. The root key signature (origin) is always the same color; and chords some distance r away on the circle of fifths is the shade/hue at that offset r.

There is a similar concept described in the Tantacruel video towards the end.

You can explore it here on Monic Theory. (mobile view should be fixed within 48 hours)

Re:Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results? on Monday September 07, 2026 @01:48PM (#49600943)
yeah. There are a lot of MIDI metadata events, and an untrained eye (or operator over an LLM) might not understand what they are for.

What? MIDI and MP3 are opposite formats, they are designed for orthogonal runtime readouts. MIDI is a protocol that contains a variety of meta events and note events. I suppose you could use PCM to represent MIDI, but if you have the entire audio spectrum available [in an MP3 file], there's then the very strange choice to constrict yourself to exactly one non-integer frequency value.

Or, your Fable hallucinated an interpretation and you went along with it.

Also, the composer you are referencing is not Eric Satre, it is Eric Satie, composer of the 3 famous Gymnopedie pieces for solo piano.

Off with the Flat Birthers, I'm a Reverse Birther!

hey thanks! I learned from your article that "if you can make a website, you can make an ebook."

This is inspiring because I can indeed make a website, and have a lot of drafts that I want to turn into a book!

Good feedback. An in-DAW generation VST is indeed something we could cook up! Glad to hear there is interest in that.

I agree the current workflow can improve, which is why the next release will feature "Conductor" mode: a 7-track synthesizer (one track per octave) all working together to create a complete passage of music.

Each of the tracks can choose a starter template from: Loop, Theme & Variation, Call & Response, Stream

Thanks for the feedback on pricing. Yes, I am continuously updating the algebra and synthesis schematics to improve the quality of music.

When you do find sample packs online that you like, how much do you typically pay for them? What value did you find in that asset?

Your cynicism is depressing, and I hope you find wellness soon. This project has been in development for 8 years. When you care to find empathy, check the About page.

Thanks for the feedback!

The current stem synthesizer is intended to help you fill specific gaps in a project. For example, if you have a 16 bar section and just aren't sure what to put there, you can use Monic Theory to dial the settings matching your project and find some options.

The next feature is "multitrack mode" where you synthesize up to 7 tracks in parallel, all in cohort of the same project.

Re:Music Generation by a Composer, for Musicians on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @04:35PM (#49278183)
Yes today the application is configured to create 12-ET music. The algebra behind it is capable of representing any tuning system or music system in folk music on earth. I live in the United States, so my first market is logically the customer base nearby.
Re:Music Generation by a Composer, for Musicians on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @04:33PM (#49278170)
Hey! I've been working on these articles for about 3 months each. There will be one released about every two months, because performing research, writing an article, and editing into a communicable tone that speaks to anybody takes a lot of time.
Re:Music Generation by a Composer, for Musicians on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @04:32PM (#49278158)
Yes bryzaguy is correct! You can synthesize stems and audition them to fit your project.
