Re:Ask HN: Looking for help/advice/mentoring resources online, free or... on Friday March 27, 2020 @07:03AM (#22701869)
I think you are too self-centered as of now. You need to de-focus.

To do that, the best advice I can give you is Travel (obviously once the corona thing is taken care of). Travel a lot and do travel on shoestring budget. This gives you the opportunity to meet new people, new geographies and help you cultivate new ideas and slowly form a picture of your life on your own.

This also helps you in start to focus on others instead of your own self at all times.

Focus the conversations around your experience being an EM in your current role. Do NOT expect that you should know (or should have experienced) certain things because you are a manager in your current role...just accept candidly what you have experienced and what you haven't.

Management is all about experience.

Re:Ask HN: Are daily standups any useful? on Thursday October 18, 2018 @07:17PM (#18253166)
Here is the catch in your statement:

"giving them some sort of responsibility to complete those tasks"

1) Why do you have to give this on a daily basis? Assuming everyone in your team is dedicated and responsible, then why.

2) asking for help and advice should not wait for the next standup. If someone is stuck, they should reach out for help right away than waiting for next standup.

Ask HN: Are daily standups any useful?

I will make a blanket statement:I believe existence of daily standups in any organization shows lack of trust. If the timelines are clear and everyone knows what to deliver why have that distraction at all? Even if its just 15 mins. What do you guys think?

I wish to know how many of you are actually happy and content with where they are.It does not mean that you do not desire more, but more like you are extremely satisfied with what you have right now.

Re:Ask HN: Great science fiction movies? on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @06:15AM (#16105227)
'Contact (1997)' is good. One of the best alien movies. Since we are on the topic of fiction, let me add one more, Man From Earth (2007).
Re:Ask HN: Why do so many startups invest so little in design? on Sunday December 31, 2017 @02:39AM (#16039795)
Because design is still a luxury skill set. We need it to become a slight more available in the market.
Re:Ask HN: Should a login be a Username or an Email? on Sunday July 02, 2017 @05:21AM (#14681649)
We have already had a hard time selecting a email username (the part which comes before @). Now if you ask me to choose another username, I am going to be wanting the same email username because I do not want to remember another name. Its more difficult than remembering passwords. If your service becomes extremely popular then I will not get a proper username available (if I am one of the late to party guys).

So avoid usernames at all cost. Email is longer, but more often, who needs to enter it again and again, we anyways store it in stored passwords on chrome etc.

Ask HN: $2000 for Minimum Viable Product (MVP)?

Hi All,What do you guys think about a website where you can hire a freelancer for USD 2000 to build an MVP?Obviously it will be a more polished version of MVP which you can take to market.Motivation:Since many of us are working and would love to play with few ideas in the market. The biggest hurdle is to get a version 1.0 (lets call it MVP) built so that we can validate the market as soon as...

Re:Show HN: CarSnap, a visual car comparison app on Saturday February 27, 2016 @11:50PM (#11189903)
Yeah Brudgers, you have to select both the cars. When you click on any link, it does not refresh page but just scrolls up to show that your car is selected. Thanks for liking the idea :)

Yes, currently the DB is too small. Just wanted to test waters whether this idea makes sense.
