Re:Diaspora Co-Founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy Passes Away At 21 on Monday November 14, 2011 @12:24PM (#3234794)
The more you talk about suicide, the more people commit it. It's a terrible conundrum in spreading awareness of how many people actually commit suicide. If there is a high-profile case of suicide reported, there will usually be an uptick in suicide and single car, single-passenger car crashes by people in similar demographics. There is an entire section in Cialdini's book Influence, on the social proof of suicide, and I just recently heard this Freakonomics podcast on the subject http://www.freakonomics.com/2011/08/31/new-freakonomics-radi...
Re:Is Tumblr a bot fest? on Saturday October 22, 2011 @06:20PM (#3144463)
Tumblr isn't a bot fest necessarily, but the fact is that any site with a large amount of traffic will generally become a target for bots. It's almost a compliment to a website, but at the same time it can be a nuisance. The Tumblr bots I'm familiar with follow by category and tags, not necessarily post content. The reason the author's blog gets autofollowed is likely because he is in a lucrative niche.

Captchas won't really stop them, it just adds expense and time. Many black hat tools integrate captcha breaking services. Cost is somewhere around $2 per 1000.

It seems kind of ironic to have such an egregious bug on a site dealing with coding and technology...
Re:First Ride in Tesla Model S on Tuesday October 04, 2011 @02:29AM (#3069674)
I drove the Karma last month and it was pretty awesome. I'm big on electric cars, but the downfall of 100% electric is a term called Range Anxiety. Which as the name implies, is being anxious about how far you can go. A car like the karma has a gas tank that allows it to go up to 250 miles more after the 50 miles of battery are up. That is the main difference I learned between the electric vs hybrid cars, and to me an important distinction...
Re:Ask HN: How do you promote your web apps? on Thursday September 08, 2011 @09:29AM (#2973807)
Another decent way which wasn't mentioned here so far is to comment on other blogs and pages with similar content. Not only is it a boost for SEO but, if your app is related to the post, people who read the comments will click through if relevant.

In SEO a main strategy is actually doing this, blackhatters use software that automatically posts comments on related blogs, but the whitehat (clean) method is to do it manually, and it works. Try to comment on as many high quality blogs as possible (high Page Rank).

Tip: Try to use your keyword for your name so it is anchor text, although some blogs might not approve your comment because of that.

The area that Groupon really shines in, and that Google was trying to acquire, is the vast number of local salespeople on the ground. Customer service and interaction are not Facebook's strong points.

I make mobile websites and this is the best emulator I know of to test them for an iPhone or iPad. It runs on the desktop and is pretty slick. http://www.puresimstudios.com/ibbdemo/
Re:If you're not famous, joining Twitter is painful on Saturday July 23, 2011 @05:37PM (#2797897)
Get an autofollow/unfollow program which just follows people based on keyword, followers list, following list, etc. You put a couple of interesting tweets, and interesting username, and a background and profile image. It follows those people, see who follows back and then after a certain amount of time unfollows the ones who don't (or everyone) pretty easy way to get a lot of people seeing your tweets.
I recommend using a free service called SpyPig to include an invisible image in the email that will notify you when the email is opened (if images are enabled). I usually wait about 10 minutes after the notification and call the client or lead and ask them if they had a minute to check my email. They usually say something like "Yeah you have perfect timing, I just took a look at it..." It's a pretty slick little trick http://www.spypig.com/ Good luck!
Re:Show HN: My weekend project, QR-codes for everybody on Sunday June 26, 2011 @02:54PM (#2698730)
since i see people asking how this can be useful, think about putting this on a coupon page. people are at their computer looking at the coupons before they visit a business. they simply scan the code and it brings up a mobile version with which they can use to redeem the coupon when they go to the business.
Re:Show HN: My weekend project, QR-codes for everybody on Sunday June 26, 2011 @02:51PM (#2698724)
My company uses QR code demonstrations and giveaways to get clients, this might just come in handy for us. Thank you.

ps if anyone out there is interested in selling mobile websites for us, typical commission is around $300 and you do not need to know any coding. please contact me on skype or [email protected]

Re:Ask HN: How to make $100 today? on Monday June 13, 2011 @02:34PM (#2650156)
I have another method that is even easier, in case you can't make facebook pages. It's all about arbitrage. Find a person who needs a service (web design, coding, etc) and then pay someone else less to do it. I do this all the time with freelancer.com and odesk for large projects, netting thousands of dollars in the middle, just for overseeing a project.

I recommend you keep it simple and small though, at least at first. There is a website, fiverr.com that has people who list jobs they will do for $5. I have resold some of these jobs for well over $100.

I don't really want to give away my best methods on here and the best gigs, but msg me if you really need some help. I would recommended combining the sales process in my post above with the outsourcing method of this one.

Good luck.

Re:Ask HN: How to make $100 today? on Monday June 13, 2011 @02:26PM (#2650106)
Most people who make $100 a day aren't going to come out and tell you exactly what to do. But the simplest method is to come up with, or sell a product with at least $100 profit and then try to make one sale a day, like I said, pretty simple.

I used to do it with facebook pages. I would check out local businesses (any city) that could go for a custom facebook page. I had some templates that I could customize really quickly and would throw up a mock page. If I could get through to the decision maker and show them the example, I was about 20% successful in a sale. Considering the costs were just my time, I was easily profiting $100+ a day by making 10-20 calls and emails a day.

Re:Ask HN: Are clones profitable investments? on Monday May 30, 2011 @02:01PM (#2599995)
The clone can be profitable if you are able to make it appealing enough to a specific niche, because you can then have hyper targeted content and ads. I wouldn't think an exact clone of Quora or Groupon would work, but a version tailored to a specific Groupon niche would be able to have deals more targeted than a general one, and a Quora clone could have ads that appeal to the questions on the pages that are niche-specific. Also, look for ways to mutate and twist the existing version, not just simply clone it completely.

I'd read it. I guess there are others out there who appreciate all the good entrepreneur and business topics, but could do with less programming/coding stuff.

Re:Ask HN: "Unknown or expired link." on Thursday April 14, 2011 @01:31AM (#2445754)
This always happens to me, I thought the page was designed to make you always refresh or something lol.
hate to be a stick in the mud, but aren't passwords hard enough to remember when they're not randomly generated?
If you ran ads with 500,000 displays and only 13 or so clicks, you did something horribly wrong. Facebook ads have a value because they can be ultra targeted. There are many ways ways you could have made a mistake, for instance, demographics that were too unspecific, bad images, not enough variations (i use 10+ sometimes), bad copy, etc.

I like to look at the comparison of google ads vs facebook ads as such: If you want to provide a service/product to people who are seeking that solution, use Google ads. And if you want to go to the targeted demographic directly and present your solution/product/message, use Facebook.

An example would be if you sold wedding services in miami. You could go on facebook and target women 25-35 who are engaged and live in miami. The ads would display only for the targeted demographic and would likely have a good click-through rate. Or you could go into google adwords and buy terms related to wedding services miami or zipcode+wedding service. The differences here are that a woman in the younger demographic is much more likely to be spending hours on facebook and only minutes on a google search.

In addition, google also has incredibly high competition for some of the more lucrative keywords and it is getting increasingly more competitive in local search, now requiring a top 7 ranking to really matter in the local listings.

Also, never underestimate the cpm (cost per thousand) displays of facebook ads to the targeted demographic. They work great for events like concerts and other events when simple awareness is key. A good image also helps a lot, as I run ads with the same text and different images and see dramatic differences in the number of clicks.

It's difficult for me to believe that "nobody cares about Facebook ads and no one clicks on them" because Facebook Ads (and Google Adwords/Adsense) operate as markets, with a bidding system on price. I almost don't want to post this because the more people who know about and use facebook ads, the higher the price rises. Their prices have been steadily rising over the last year as more and more business try them out. They do work, but not for every product and not for every demographic. But people wonder how facebook can have such a high valuation, because they underestimate the amount of direct access and data Facebook has to over 500 million people.

The ads do work, but to create a good campaign requires knowledge of the platform, and experience in marketing, advertising, and copywriting. Laypeople assume they don't need marketers and can do buys themselves, and more cheaply, but usually end up spending more. The true gold in online advertising though, comes from what happens after the person clicks.

Re:Tell HN: Breakup Notifier is now Crush Notifier on Saturday February 26, 2011 @01:27AM (#2265026)
It seems like the developer just gave up. I would have collected everyones email and told them that they will be notified when everything is fixed, or just have created the same service under a different name to challenge facebook to shut it down again.
