Re:Ask HN: What do you think about stickers on laptops? on Thursday January 12, 2023 @06:28PM (#34361743)
I think it's a cool way to show off some info, like foundation you support or certain non-mainstream tech you use. It's great to use such things as conversation starter. I had a few on my previous laptop. No regrets!
What's even better is that you can access it with duckduckgo !hn bang.

Please update illustration link, doesn't work.
Yes, there's really something about old school system administration. I do really appreciate how Fedora and Debian SA team does it, you can see here: - https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/ - https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/infra/ - https://dsa.debian.org/

Re:Ask HN: Should I learn Emacs in 2022? on Thursday March 17, 2022 @07:13AM (#30709805)
No need to ask other people about that. Just have a weekend learning Emacs + Lisp and make your own opinion. This configuration (https://github.com/susam/emfy) is a great start. If you like it - use it, if you don't - throw it away. Also, you don't have to fall into a trap of configuring Emacs, well known hackers uses the bare minimum of it and are highly productive. If you're afraid of RSI, you can quickly change default bindings using, for example, Xah-Fly-Keys, or Evil if you're into Vim bindings.
Would upvote HTDP as a great book to read before starting SICP, if you only begin your programming journey.
How many people search before creating another Ask HN, which was discussed already many times?

Re:Ask HN: What can you do to help the grieving? on Sunday October 10, 2021 @04:29PM (#28821684)
I've been going through grief, and silence is the most annoying thing I encountered lately. People are so afraid to talk about death and grief, they believe that if they say something about it, you'll turn into tears, but that's wrong most of the time. People just don't know how to deal with hard feelings to the extent they just do not say anything. And this is painful, since it vanishes last bits of a person from life. There's nothing wrong with death, people's reaction what makes it sad. And it's in your hands to make it meaningful and help other people with it. Do not ever be silent about death: talk, ask, listen, share a grief and never forget about it.
Re:Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN? on Saturday October 09, 2021 @06:46AM (#28808679)
This is interesting! How many hours a day do you spend at work? In what position? I think it's a very good opportunity for smart, tech-savvy people to realize their dreams. It's hard for me to do it myself, my day job completely exhausts me, usually by the end of the day I have no interest in doing anything else. That's why I've always admired people who can combine work and hobbies and be successful at them.

Awesome! It's actually would be nice to have something like a library of MIDI snippets that you can record and store under org-mode bullets, sort them by tags (mood, tempo, genre) and then quickly copy them into a DAW. It would give another dimension to musicians, not only they can store verbally formulated ideas about their music in form of notes, but actually have a library of materials they can use.

For sure it's a reason to try something else.
Re:Ask HN: Managing Personal Finances with Git on Wednesday June 02, 2021 @06:55PM (#27375039)
I always had a question for people who do such things. Is it really worth the time to configure such things and get into a habit of it?

It's like a ton of time to get into such framework, much easier to install some app on your phone. What's the point? (Sincere question)

Love that example. Glad I do not spend money recklessly.
Re:How to get rich without being lucky (2019) on Saturday May 22, 2021 @12:54PM (#27248271)
There's is for sure some good advice, but most of this is just useless word play, which does not give you any directions, but gives you a false sense of "life and society understanding". If you don't know that reading and work makes you wealthy, you're a probably a fool. It's important to tell people they can unite and work towards common good of humankind, but you should not title it "How to Get Rich".
Re:How to get rich without being lucky (2019) on Saturday May 22, 2021 @12:45PM (#27248187)
Well, we're assume there's a certain path you can take to maximize your chances, it will be too pessimistic to always take bad luck in account.

Re:Ask HN: Mobile phone addiction help? on Tuesday May 04, 2021 @08:31AM (#27036861)
I was thinking about making some kind of 'internet switch' with arduino. Like a big button which turns on/off the internet. I just think it's way cooler than unplugging the cable. Has anyone done something similar?
Thank you, that's great example and a marvelous advice.
Yep, speaking for thinking is way underrated
Yep, I really like the concept of "Learning in public". Which is essentially described in "The Coding Career Handbook". Learn stuff -> Blog about it.

Ask HN: How do you become an active reader and deep thinker?

Even though I'm mostly surfing the internet because of procrastination, most of the time I do find some interesting nuggets of wisdom, though I never make notes on them, do not reflect and forget most of them pretty soon. Some time ago I've read a bit of pretty good advice: "Every time you encounter a piece of new information (lecture, blog post, book, etc), you should try to recall it...

Re:Ask HN: Games that made you better at your work? on Sunday April 18, 2021 @07:01AM (#26851447)
I think games that involve physical activity can benefit you hugely.
Thank you very much, you're awesome!

Ask HN: Where do you start with programming synthesizers?

I have basic programming knowledge (a bit of python, bash, elisp). Music is my passion, and I think I should move into the music software industry since my current job (DevOps) does not really satisfy me, but when I'm at home I'm really passionate about my synths, modular and other music-related stuff, also I'm really into sound perception and sounds generally speaking. So, my question is where...
