I think the desire to keep this place so pleasant and not moderate dressed-up views rooted in racism / hate ("we're not political" being a political stance, more or less) lets some really reprehensible threads live / get defended.

To the point someone brought up elsewhere, you can't really 'fight' back either. Everything remains 'polite' despite viewing you as less of a human being for being a person of color, poor, etc.

This offers far more about the motivations and worldview of the author than it does about the future of our world, and perhaps their inability to reconcile the fact that others experience the world differently than them.

Many of us would love to retire early to pursue hobbies and education as an end in and of themselves.

I don't think I've ever been so viscerally revolted by the vision of a company.
Yes, because they’re so bleeding edge and powerful.

Whether you believe that is another thing. But that’s the signal. It’s amazing marketing for them, even if a pain in the ass for customers rn

Large volume of text for a fellow who apparently lacks familiarity with the study of consciousness in the first place.
This is how a lot of regular people are engaging with AI, whether you consider it silly or not.

to be clear, the work you’re doing is only relevant to the extent it produces product

nobody cares if you use your brain or not. they do care if you’re efficiently delivering reliable product

Fully agree and am pretty disappointed reading replies on here. Anyone familiar with the demographics of this forum? What % male is it? If you have women in your life, ask their thoughts on this. It’s easy to not understand problems that don’t exist for us.

agree here

vehicle safety improvements are one of the primary motivators (for me) to drive new cars. driving is dangerous and i want the best odds when the inevitable occurs

It criticized the potus, and threat of his ire is enough to scare corporations in 2025. A fairly concerning development
Re:My thoughts on renting versus buying on Sunday September 14, 2025 @05:48PM (#45243563)
i guess it will depend a lot on where you bought

some parts of california have been affected by insurers more than others, but in those more minimally affected? prop tax is suppressed via prop 13 (for better or worse), and the cost of insurance is a drop in the bucket relative to what id be paying for a roof over my head otherwise tbh

Re:My thoughts on renting versus buying on Sunday September 14, 2025 @05:46PM (#45243534)
yep

my life cannot be uprooted based on the whims of a crummy landlord or because my obligation has crept out of my budget

i bought conservatively and now have a tiny payment relative to what i’d otherwise have to pay to live in the bay area. peace of mind is hard to put a price on

it’s wild seeing this forum both-sides-same itself into overlooking the hate this dude put into the world
This is semantic nitting and wastes time when for all practical intents and purposes humans understand the assertion being made and find it agreeable.

Plan for the evisceration of public services in the interest of privatizing them to enrich a select group of capital owners.
Re:I am rich and have no idea what to do on Thursday January 02, 2025 @07:24PM (#42580649)
This stood out to me as well.

A pitfall for experts in one field to assume their skills are transferable.

that’s fairly on brand for hackernews

doubly so if it’s from a person with no expertise in the relevant field

Re:Fun facts about Google Scholar on Wednesday November 20, 2024 @06:07PM (#42199091)
The entire point is that experts are doing this triage for you, and building upon fruitful lanes of research.

To think that as an outsider to a field you are qualified to discover 'gems' (and between the lines here is a bit of an assumption that one is more qualified than researchers in the field, who are of course trying to discover 'gems') seems misguided.

I suspect it’s 2. Local organizational optimizations to garner promotions for middle-managers and without regard for systemic impact.
I don’t think it reads that way either. Inclined to think they didn’t read it.
Re:I'm an Old Fart and AI Makes Me Sad on Friday February 16, 2024 @11:24AM (#39399111)
How on earth have you not found it empowering? Have you used it for answering questions?

It’s resolved countless questions of jr devs at work, helped me migrate a C++ project to Python, and continues to help me solve problems in personal and professional projects.

This post is very confusing. It is an amazing utility for engineering (to say nothing of other applications - it gave me a great recipe for dinner the other night, too)

Re:Finding a new software developer job on Sunday February 11, 2024 @06:49PM (#39340016)
Job market seems healthy for anyone with sufficient experience.

My company is hiring, my inbox is slammed with companies hiring. And this is for product engineering and leadership.

The market is cold for juniors, and unclear when/how that’s changing.

Edit for context, but this is in silicon valley. Never relocated during the pandemic - always suspected this might end up being the case.

Re:How to Add 10 Years to Your Life on Tuesday January 30, 2024 @05:26PM (#39196777)
I'm sorry but this just immediately made me think of this grindset hustle bro:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoH9_wQnQ_A

You're toast.

This article is framed incorrectly. The author is focused around productivity or 'wasted' time. Rather, it should be about ensuring that the things you fill your time with bring you joy.

A lot of people fill their idle time gazing at social media, and this activity isn't making them happier. That makes it a waste of time. To the extent they're playing games or enjoying themselves, and are otherwise managing their life - there is no problem. There are no years to add to your life.

Life is not a formula to min max, at least imo

Re:FAQ on Leaving Google on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @06:18PM (#39035017)
> We're moving back to the office, we're dropping DEI, migrating things to AI.

Are these things 'growing up'? I don't really see them happening in the ways you're describing.

At the tech giants, RTO is quite common, but I also see the creation of countless new companies that were birthed in the pandemic and have healthy remote cultures that benefit from hiring flexibly.

With respect to DEI, it's more at the forefront than ever. It's easier to hire now than it was a decade ago given the layoffs, meaning it's even easier to assess many qualified applicants and validate that you're bringing on fresh, healthy perspectives to your team.

The AI thing I'll concede though. That's been a lot of fun and I do agree is happening across the board.

Re:Notion Calendar on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @06:15PM (#39034976)
Are there tools you do trust? How broadly do you apply this approach to the use of web applications?
This makes me think of observations re: functioning in adults with hearing loss (tl;dr hearing aids help mitigate cognitive decline).

Maybe it's simply that remaining stimulated is critical to sustaining cognitive resilience, such that odors - much like any other sensory stimulant - help keep your mind on its toes?

Fun to think about

Re:Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It on Wednesday October 04, 2023 @04:10AM (#37762271)
The competitive disadvantage RTO companies have is trying to hire locally.

We have the pick of the best engineers from around the country (in some cases, world) because we pay bay area (startup adjusted) salaries regardless of where you live. The team is top notch - probably the best I’ve ever worked with.

So yeah - a cost to maintaining comms culture, but the payoff can be pretty nonlinear.

Re:Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It on Monday October 02, 2023 @01:43PM (#37741739)
I disagree. Colocation isn't the competitive advantage for startups. Strong communication is.

You can get part of this for 'free' if you shove everyone in a room.

You can also get this if you invest in strong remote culture that encourages lots of remote collaboration.

Source: I've been at a remote-first startup that is kicking ass over the last two years. In-office is available but remains entirely optional.
