“inevitable”? hardly. how many first-year Leafs are out there on the original battery? a lot, i’d reckon most. how many dead Leafs are out there which were totalled because of needing a new battery? certainly less than those which were totalled due to rust, collision, etc., ie the things that kill gas cars too.
Re:Driverless cars are no place to relax, new study shows on Monday August 28, 2023 @03:50PM (#37299552)
Is it obvious? Waymo has hundreds of driverless taxis in SF where you literally cannot sit in the driver's seat. Stuff that consumers can currently get their hands on isn't really driverless but the tech exists now.

This has been possible for years. I actually got in the habit of porting my qt projects to the web target because they ran better than native compiled on some of my older machines.
No - 3-tier is an infrastructural pattern, not a software design pattern. It means you have a front-end, back-end, and database.

Yes, wget and curl are web clients. This is not.
Re:Taskfile: A Modern Alternative to Makefile on Sunday July 16, 2023 @08:25AM (#36746195)
Ruby is much better on the package management front and may be better suited to this task overall.
Such as the website this project is hosted on.

Thunderbird is, and has always been, essentially a Firefox distribution which implements an MUA instead of a web browser.

They don’t even do server side encryption, though. Might as well use Gmail.
“Default” container tabs have no user-facing UI. Tab Containers gives them a ui.
Elixir never really didn’t have a static type system, this is just improving it.
Re:Why a browser and mail combination is worth it on Tuesday June 27, 2023 @09:26AM (#36492398)
Not all email clients. Not even all modern email clients. Certainly not the email client I use.

So, banning low-compute-capacity clients in the worst way possible. Awesome.

This isn’t a dupe, this is a new post with expanded content published on June 20.
Re:I Give Up on Free Software Phones on Tuesday June 20, 2023 @07:51PM (#36412406)
shutting down means you cannot receive phone calls.

This is actually one of the major problems linux phone operating system hackers have been trying to solve — idle power consumption is really really important for a cell phone, but most hardware open enough to run custom operating systems on don’t have easy ways to suspend to a reliable low-power state.

Re:Milk-V Duo: A $9 RISC-V COMPUTER on Sunday June 18, 2023 @10:46AM (#36380752)
Many people now use the PinePhone as their “daily driver” phone device.
Re:Generating Income from Open Source on Thursday June 15, 2023 @09:55PM (#36349967)
Free as in free speech, not as in free beer. This has been a slogan of free software for decades. Charging money for your software is not in any way incompatible with open source.
Lenovo makes an AR headset which mostly functions as an external monitor to a Windows PC or Android phone, which sounds like what you want:

They are, and Firefox does (Beta currently, hitting stable in July)
Even with the full federal tax credit this is still 50% more expensive than a Corolla or Impreza. (Civics are hard to find at MSRP still.)

The Bolt would be a much, much better Corolla-killer if they weren’t discontinuing it soon in favor of $100,000 land yachts.

Re:Response to “Developers are lazy, thus Flatpak” on Sunday June 04, 2023 @10:38PM (#36191640)
Nobody expects app developers to do that, because app developers aren’t distro maintainers. This is addressed in the post that TFA is responding to.

That isn’t a “natural” concept, it’s still a legal one.
