News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

sloaken

Yes I have. Typically the websites and news media ask questions I do not care about. So I ask it MY questions. Like what is their profession, how long in politics, stance on freedom of speech, environment, economy, taxes, defense. This yielded a much better result than scanning sites. Precise answers. I did NOT ask it to rate the races. For judges retention, normal information is limited, I asked why or why not from both democratic and republican perspective. Likewise special measures. Reduced my research from a day to just an hour or so.

So if I am following this correctly, NVIDIA is todays shovel sellsmen?

Others, not miners, also made a lot of money. Personally I recommend investing in AI but not LLMs. I expect John Deere to make a lot of money implementing more AI in farm equipment.

Re:Can I get insurance for company renting humanoids for parties? on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @08:46PM (#49735067)
When in doubt, I hear Llyods of London will insure anything, for the right price.
Re:Can I get insurance for company renting humanoids for parties? on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @08:45PM (#49735052)
I think, not that I know, that they are expecting YOU, not your robots to have the liability insurance. If they go crazy, I think it is you they sue. Not the robots.

Ask HN: Any AI Market Metrics?

Looking at CNN Business there is an Economic calendar that each day will show various items like: Housing starts / Imports / Exports / Oil Wells / CPI etc.Are there any metrics on AI? As in number of data centers or number of data centers started, capacity of all AI data centers, etc.Secondary, of course, what kind of metrics would be meaningful.

I suppose logically, any tool that lacks freewill is just a tool. So in that instance I believe you are correct.

Of course the hard part here is the definition of free will.

And do not forget the dust that accumulates on the computers.
Re:Tell HN: Remember to Change Your Filters on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @09:32AM (#49521812)
Since we are on reminders: Car engine air filter Car cabin air filter Car oil Clean gutters ...

Not an ad, but my life has become way simpler since I started using a free app called Tick Tick. I run it on my phone and my PC. My Orchids have never been happier. Of course I have a few 'past due' items I need to finish, but at least they are not forgotten.

Re:Ask HN: What's a Good Physical Printer? on Friday August 28, 2026 @02:19PM (#49482475)
I agree, all those details are needed as well as volume of printing.
1) it is VERY common for people with a college degree to change careers in their 30s and 40s.

2) take a Career Aptitude (or assessment) Test. Make sure the next profession matches what brings you happiness.

Great idea. Let me know when you have an android implementation.
Because a FAQ is useful. I would add a FAQ item, what is a Cornell Note for those of us who have never heard of it, or worse yet, think they know but are wrong.
I think your quotes are accurate in the intent you just need to re-read them.

As a simple analogy: Do not focus on winning the lottery, when you cannot feed yourself today.

Save for the future but you must not starve today.

I am a big P/E (price vs earnings) fan.

Value companies typically around 10.

Growth companies usually exceed 20.

IMHO anything over 40 is too risky. Although this would prevent me from being an early investor in many successful companies. It also keeps me away from the larger number of failures.

<edit> For what it is worth, they have trailing P/E (history) vs foreword P/E which is expected. As of today NVIDIA Trailing P/E is 33.24 and forward is 24.75.

Re:Are you good at AI, or just using it? on Saturday August 22, 2026 @11:58AM (#49401007)
I like what you have. I would venture above L2, which is my level, you might have a split path. Split would involve issues of teaching, agentic, management, and architecture.

I see the value for this clearly in regards to discussion, job listings (Resumes), and for planning a knowledge path forward.

Here is an old article talking about this topic. Maybe old but seems relevant.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-airports-a-constitutional-tw...

What is important to look at is what the world events are that caused it to drop over the last 10 years.

https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=W...

To summarize the December numbers from each of the last 10 years:

2016 695M

2017 663M

2018 649M

2019 634M

2020 638M

2021 595M

2022 375M

2023 353M

2024 393M

2025 413M

Today: 307M

Yes the price would be higher without the release. Typical Supply vs Demand. Simple Economics 101.
It seems like a credibility issue. Tied to this is reviewing a product that was not purchased off the shelf.

Computer magazines in the day used to (probably still do) evaluate competing equipment. The equipment was provided by the producer. The Producer would cherry pick the best.

This is why organizations like consumers reports are respected, they BUY everything they test, so you know it was not a custom build.

So no GPU? Just a strong processor? I am considering building a 'in my house' system. Timing of this post is very fortuitous.
Re:BMWs shows in-car ads for Spiderman on Monday July 27, 2026 @03:13PM (#49074330)
This occurs in YOUR car!?! WTF That is a great reason to never buy an BMW. Thanks for the warning.
Re:Let's talk about: LinkedIn ghost jobs on Sunday July 12, 2026 @05:22PM (#48884940)
Back when H1B visas were new. Companies would post jobs they did not want to fill. The posting was to provide evidence that they could not find anyone who could do that job. Personally I have seen so many Microsoft listed jobs, that it seems impossible that they could have a layoff, unless of course ....
Re:Ask HN: Thoughts on AI in Personal Finance? on Friday July 10, 2026 @01:11AM (#48855961)
Yes, but I would not trust it to execute those decisions.

I would use it to analyze my situation, take into consideration my goals, as well as my fears and anxiety. e.g. I worry about taxes, and do not trust bonds.

Expect it to provide several plans with a list of reasons as well as pros and cons.

But I must own the final choice. One of my fears is if it does it, someone will learn to anticipate its moves and then exploit me via the AI.

Those that can, Do.

Enough said.

Hmm must be different than the one I went to.

For me CompUSA was the one stop get your tech.

In Orlando (altmonte springs) we would go to lunch at Fudd Ruckers, followed up with an hour at CompUSA.

Re:Ask HN: Would you want to know when and how you die? on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @01:33PM (#48573748)
Only if it is fixable ...

Take it as a warning sign. If I cannot change it, then all it does is cause anxiety.

In the US, I think it would be great to have them do a service type job, and to keep a camera on them. Keep their government pay, but this will document what a real person they are, or are not.

Personally when I vote use the 'what job did you do' as a major criteria. Bottom to top: Politician (never a real job), Lawyer / lobbyist (practiced liar), Government employee or student or never worked (never facing market economy impacts), college professor, ex con - then a big gap - Used car salesman (hard working but a bad reputation), other sales

Top for someone I vote for is Farmer, then any hourly worker that does a job I would not want to do, or physically cannot.

So is there a fund, that follows the S&P 500, but not the top 10? Or is S&P 500 minus tech? I know there are a lot of specialized but I would like to follow the US market as a whole but a little less into the tech.
Throw me a bone here. What rule changes?
Semi related - If USA and you have a FSA - it is like an insurance policy, so there is no REAL balance. Spend it before you are laid off. Glasses etc.

Sorry to hear you are about to be in a struggle.

Get resume out, and start looking. You will get more if you are employed vs unemployed.

If USA apply for unemployment as soon as laid off. Companies have paid into this pot, you deserve the payout. Not collecting does not leave more for others.
