Re:Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:32AM (#50055483)
There must be the equivalent for "first as a tragedy then as a comedy" saying for commercial product. "first as a tool then as a totem" or something like that.

Aren't you confusing causes and consequences here?
Re:I didn't sign the Fields medallists' letter on Thursday September 17, 2026 @05:46AM (#49738435)
Can't we get stuck in local maxima because of the lack of LLMs?
Re:Invisible Companies on Thursday September 03, 2026 @11:12AM (#49551243)
Economy is at the stage where medecine was in the 18th century. It's more of an alchemy than a science.
Imagine the landlord of a library were to close the store just because someone complained that the library was selling stolen books. Would you consider this acceptable? And we are talking about a landlord that basically own the city here.

I don't know in this particular case of Luanti, but this could be people's livelihood we are talking about, there should be some sort of legal due process.

It really feels like middle-ages kind of justice.

Can a TOS waive any rights? Surely there are some unalienable rights.
The equivalent of 6.6°C according to google.
Re:Happy 45th Birthday to the IBM PC and Model F/XT on Thursday August 13, 2026 @05:56AM (#49283707)
What the IBM PC provided was a standard on which competition was unleashed and massive investments went into improving a common platform. Which is how all the closed proprietary alternatives got overwhelmed. Without it, we would have many weak walled gardens incompatible with each other, like we have on the smartphone market.

Listen to Linus Torvalds when he says that the PC is so easy compared to the nightmare of all those incompatible arm SOCs.

I dream of a smartphone PC.

Re:How Blackwing Pencils are Made [video] on Monday August 10, 2026 @09:15AM (#49243215)
What does a pencil have over a mechanical pencil? Mechanical pencils never need sharpening, infinite supply of lead of various type and and they seem more environmentally friendly (assuming you keep using the same for many years).
Re:Fastmail offers EU data region on Saturday August 08, 2026 @01:44PM (#49224042)
There are no Five Eyes country in the EU.
Reminds me of Niven/Pournelle's "The Mote in God’s Eye" where the aliens have a very pragmatic/Jury-rigged approach to technology and everything is more or less improvised.

I have noticed this with co-workers also, when you have the ability to read/write/understand things very quickly, you tend to spend much less time on making things tidy, clear and maintainable.

Re:The day Steve Jobs dissed me in a keynote (2010) on Friday July 24, 2026 @09:43AM (#49035489)
You forgot an important quote: “We want the iTunes Music Store to have every piece of music ever recorded. Even if it’s discontinued or not selling much, we want it all.”

It seems pretty unambiguous to me.

Is it possible that people who don't care about short term profitability but still want a strategic ownership of the company bought at a high price on IPO day and now that the day traders are in, speculation will readjust the price to short term values? The change of price just reflect the different buyer profiles.

SpaceX is a pretty important company not just for "the market" but also for many other things (see Russia/Ukraine war).

Fair warning: I know nothing about all this.

So I don't necessarily disagree with you but people way more rugged than we are and who didn't even knew what a paved road was decided to get rid of wolves a long time ago.

Moreover, what I observed is that urban professional class populations are usually way more in favor of wolves reintroduction than rural working class population.

Reminds me of Deepness in the Sky (Vernor Vinge) where a guy maintains a ship by doing software archeology. He is the only guy who knows what the Unix epoch is.
And personally, I prefer doing ./game, rather than having to install a bunch of stuff and see my system cluttered by hidden folders.

"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever"
My recent experience shows that eSCL is way behind in terms of functionality. If I want lossless scanning from by Brother scanner, I need the proprietary drivers.
Does it mean that instead of depending on the Visa/Mastercard duopoly you now depend on the Google/Apple duopoly?
Yes but they are also a quick win to replace humans because they don't need accommodation or specific R&D. Any job by a human that has no been automated yet is because the ROI was too low to develop a specific robot and adapt the work environment for it.

The human is basically the standard API. A humanoid robot is a drop-in replacement implementation of this API.

After a few fixes, it builds on a debian-13. You just need to install a few dependencies (glew, SDL, curl).

The real problem here is the tooling. New versions of automake and C++ compilers are stricter than they used to be.

Indeed, for long term conservation, you need to vendor your dependencies AND your tools to make sure that the project is sustainable without intervention. But with the magic of LLMs now, this is not a problem anymore. Claude was able to fix it in less than 10 minutes.

And having the source code beats playing the original game. You can recompile in high def and make all the modifications you want to make it feel like a modern game (or not!) and sill get you your dose of nostalgia.

Re:UnDUNE II on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @10:19AM (#48108698)
A remake, in video games, is usually a rewrite on a more powerful platform. You get better resolution, better music and event better gameplay.

A demake is a rewrite on a less powerful platform.
