But a 9 year old is dependant on their parents ...?
Anyone here who uses kagi in a language other than English? Specifically German? Is it any good?

The Swiss and German railway clocks actually work the same way and stop for (half a?) second while the minute handle progresses.

Doesn't look like it:

He doesn't either, does he? But he's great in outlining how to get to the point of having enough idea to go through with his project.

Correcting the number/date formatting will probably be the more challenging, yet still boring, Job, I guess.
Re:Why does Cloudflare Pages have such a generous Free tier? on Thursday January 16, 2025 @01:41AM (#42722108)
Don't know much about corporate traffic usage, but at some cheap VPS place like Hetzner you get 20TB traffic per month included für less than 4€.

Seems like a lot of traffic to me, probably is next to nothing or would cost more.

The author of the software called it like that. Maybe quotes would still make sense.
Re:Notepad Tab on Tuesday May 28, 2024 @02:48AM (#40498046)
It’s actually compressed. It uses https://github.com/nodeca/pako and then applies base64. Try entering hundreds of "a" and you’ll see that the base64 doesn’t really get much longer.

And if you live with a toddler, even those have to exist and are necessary for becoming a healthy being. At least if they are met with understanding by the parents.

It always was, you just didn't realize that as a student. At least here in Germany.
Re:The unfortunate math behind consulting companies (2011) on Saturday December 23, 2023 @05:37PM (#38748988)
Sounds about right...? End of November 2023 the average German worker hat 20 sick days already. Add 2 for December and 2 for good measure and you're at 2/month.

Same thing on Android, e.g., WhatsApp uses Google storage automatically for backups.
Re:The Curse of Docker on Sunday November 26, 2023 @01:06AM (#38419548)
But that could be said about each an any dependency.

And some (very rare) companies do enforce that, everyone else has to build up a bit of trust.

As the guy is German and most certainly uses ä/ö/ü/ß, he probably has an idea.
Re:Laws of UX on Tuesday July 11, 2023 @01:23PM (#36684223)
From the site itself:

> 1. All processes have a core of complexity that cannot be designed away and therefore must be assumed by either the system or the user. > 2. Ensure as much as possible of the burden is lifted from users by dealing with inherent complexity during design and development. > 3. Take care not to simplify interfaces to the point of abstraction.

One extremely convenient situation for me is getting sorround sound from the TV to the AV receiver in a single cable.
Re:TikTok is a threat. So is the rest of Big Tech on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @07:46AM (#35259606)
You wouldn't believe how much tiktok helps at parenting, giving tiny bits of information every day to help with the problems you have with a newborn. To have you constantly updated on first-aid for newborns...

Same thing also goes for a ton of other topics, eg. woodworking.

Of course, you have to get into the right circles first, bit there is so much knowledge, easy to grasp, not much time or effort needed. But it takes a couple of days to get there.

Re:Amazon Photos just ate 240,364 of my photos on Thursday March 16, 2023 @09:58AM (#35182036)
All the time actually. I have monthly folders, automatically backed up by my phone to the NAS. Each month my wife and I sift through the photos and delete all duplicates and boring stuff and then we have around 150 photos per month that we sometime just have on as a slideshow.

Yearly, we create printed photo albums that we look at regularly and show to our kids.

But all this only works after lots and lots of hours of manual work filtering the photos.

Still, over the last 15 years or so for two people we have way more than 100k photos stored on the NAS.

WoltLab Burning Board was the one big German counterpart to PhpBB, quite popular in Germany at the time.
Re:Pretty Good House on Tuesday January 17, 2023 @04:33AM (#34410665)
Not really a problem one would be aware of. Double glazing is the default since 50 years at least in Germany, so the manufacturing processes are quite good.

Still, leakages happen, you recognize that usually by water/steam between the two glass panes. If the windows aren't to old you can just switch out the glass leaving the plastic frames. If they're older (30 yrs) it's more economical to switch out glass and frames.

Re:Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11 on Monday December 12, 2022 @12:26PM (#33957430)
In this case (it's was couple of years ago) it was a beta release by the manufacturer.

Thing is, to me as an end user it doesn't matter who's at fault, if it doesn't work it doesn't work and I'm only so motivated to investigate something (functionality wise) basic not working while on Windows all the basics run fine but the advanced stuff creates problems. With Linux on desktop I never arrived at the advanced stuff giving up at (some of) the basic stuff not working out of the box.

But I fully understand, from a technical standpoint drivers and daisy chained display probably aren't basic and Windows has hidden als the complexity from me for the last 20 years.

Re:Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11 on Sunday December 11, 2022 @01:07PM (#33945639)
My computer ran well with Linux with one display after instaing Linux. Then I tried to use a second, daisy chained, Displayport display. And the mess began. Confusing tips on forums, confusing and experimental drivers to install... And so on. Didn't manage to get it running.
Maybe for all devices published since 2016?
Re:Sile: A Modern Rewrite of TeX on Thursday November 03, 2022 @09:31AM (#33450678)
But you can just use the same syntax as LaTeX. Or a simplified version. Or use the GUI. It really isn't as bad as it seems at first glance.
Re:A Web UI for Stable Diffusion on Saturday September 10, 2022 @02:24AM (#32788335)
Is it any different than Photoshop content aware fill? Or using a camera?

Nobody would ever think about Adobe or Nikon having copyright claims over your pictures. For me it's just a tool, the artistic part is providing a good description/base image, refining and choosing the best output.

Anyway, I'm not a lawyer and we probably live in different countries, so it'll be interesting to wait for the first lawsuit.
