How is this news? Coders put swear words into their code...big deal....
Re:FuzzyWuzzy: Fuzzy String Matching in Python on Friday July 08, 2011 @07:01PM (#2744447)
This looks pretty awesome. I remember when I was thinking about making a quote Website back in college. I had just learned about the Levenshtein distance algorithm in a class and was exciting about finding a real-life (re: non-contrived) scenario to apply it to.

Anyway, this looks like a really useful library. Glad it's freely available.

Re:G+ doesn't support Opera... why? on Thursday July 07, 2011 @10:12AM (#2738466)
Perhaps the video chat plugin doesn't work with Opera? I don't know personally. If this is the case, however, then I can see Google not wanting to offer a half-working product to users.
Finally! An American judge with some common sense!

Honestly, though, I think this is a good first step. I enjoy some Apple products, but I'll be more than happy to see them lose this. If they can trademark "app store", then what's next? They trademarks the term "app(s)", as well?

You can configure it to use other services than the appspot site -- Dropbox, Cloudapp, imgur, Imm.io, Imageshack, Flickr, Picasa, Github Gist, Pastebin.com, Mysticpaste, Chemical servers, Dafk and Hotfile.

Pretty good article at http://techcrunch.com/2010/12/29/drag2u/.

Re:Orson Scott Card: How 'Friend' Became a Verb on Wednesday December 15, 2010 @05:41PM (#2010138)
I agree with this completely. If you enjoy his novels, then read them. No where does it say that you have to agree, or even read, his personal and political views (yes, I realize they seep into his novels, but this goes back to my "if you like the novels, read them" statement).

On the subject of his political views, I looked at the referenced Wikipedia site and don't see anything "vulgar" listed there. Perhaps I use a different definition of "vulgar" than others... [http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vulgar]

Re:Html5 Adventure Calendar on Thursday December 02, 2010 @11:51AM (#1962653)
Very cool stuff. I really liked Ball Pool from Dec. 1st.
I see. I look at StackOverflow, but have never engaged in posting, so I didn't know that the site worked that way.

Look at that! Learned something new today!

That's a nice looking site. Thanks for sharing it.
Not sure, but it does feel like a wiki-style Website is better suited for maintaining the list.
Re:Since you asked, Gruber, here are my Android "killer apps" on Saturday November 20, 2010 @07:15PM (#1925771)
I'll leave the debate over what makes a "killer app" to you guys. I just want to thank the OP for his list. I'm really digging 8pen so far. It's changing how I interact with my phone (which, one could argue, deems it "killer").
Re:Are You a Blue Collar or White Collar Developer? on Sunday December 20, 2009 @10:47PM (#1007112)
Overall, the article was pretty good. I think the conclusion is right on (just get some enthusiastic developers and get to work).

The article made it seem (IMHO) that the different personalities were completely distinct. I'd have to disagree with that point, having majored in CS while at college, but I feel like I'm slightly more "blue collar" than "white collar". I think you can definitely have bits of both personalities. Just my 2 cents.

Psh. They do this for a lot less in Napoleon Dynamite....
Re:Ask HN: Why Python over Ruby? on Wednesday July 01, 2009 @01:33PM (#683020)
Not having some way to explicitly note the end of a function was actually something that initially bugged me about Python. I think I'm over it now...

Re:Ask HN: Why Python over Ruby? on Wednesday July 01, 2009 @01:28PM (#683014)
I believe the parent was referring to the rubygems system, not the quality of the gems themselves.
Re:Ask HN: Why Python over Ruby? on Wednesday July 01, 2009 @12:20PM (#682877)
"Ruby lived fast and died young."

How can you say that a language with active development and an active community has "died"? Seems like an odd conclusion to make, IMHO.

And it is really easy to enjoy Ruby without Rails. A friend and I have been doing it for a couple years now.

Re:Ask HN: Why Python over Ruby? on Wednesday July 01, 2009 @12:05PM (#682854)
While I agree that readability matters _a lot_, the "Zen of Python" honestly bugs me. But maybe it's just the counter-culture ethos that dwells inside me. +)

Note: I used Python daily at work and for open source projects. I also use Ruby for open source projects. I like them both.

Re:Firefox May Already Be Dead on Saturday March 21, 2009 @04:19PM (#526545)
It'd be more interesting to see an article comparing Chrome to Firefox 3.1b3, which recently came out. See https://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/index.php/2009/03/12/f.... You'll notice that one of the improvements in b3 is performance increase in the javascript engine.

You're right, though, when you say that it isn't just about the javascript engine's speed. So maybe we should wait until Chrome becomes a full-featured browser before we start touting its unbelievable performance. Remember when Firefox went 2.0 and one of the biggest complaints (that I remember) was how it had become bloated and wasn't as fast? Guaranteed the same will eventually happen to Chrome.

Re:IPhone Game iShoot earns the Developer $600K in a month on Sunday February 15, 2009 @01:17PM (#482142)
Making a "lite" version is the same thing as making a demo, which has been around for decades. I don't think this is a cat that just got out of the bag, or anything.
Re:Um, I have a question (about programmer productivity) on Thursday February 12, 2009 @11:24PM (#479434)
Could it be that productivity differs for each person? Maybe we can't have a productivity scale that is the same for everyone? Maybe it has to be applied personally?

But then again, maybe if we drill down deep enough, we'd find common themes or aspects for why Alice feels more productive with Ruby and Bob with Python.

Re:Um, I have a question (about programmer productivity) on Thursday February 12, 2009 @11:18PM (#479426)
I agree with you 100%. I've noticed a strong correlation to me personally feeling like I've been productive and having a "how did it get so late?" moment. The times when I look at the clock every 10 minutes are the times when I'm usually thinking about things other than my code.
Re:Everything is amazing, but nobody is happy. on Tuesday February 10, 2009 @12:50AM (#474780)
Not only very funny, but very true. If society as a whole just took a moment and pondered on some of the great things we have, I think it would make a huge difference in the way we treat each other.
