Re:Winamp Legacy player source code on Tuesday September 24, 2024 @12:53PM (#41638474)
Weird, how does that even work? Does cracked mean its' been decompiled? It's strange because it includes other stuff like build scripts, etc that wouldn't be in released binaries..
Re:Ask HN: How do you avoid video game addiction? on Thursday April 07, 2022 @01:02PM (#30947283)
You should check out Gabor Mate (there are many good interviews on youtube) to understand the nature of addicting, especially as it pertains to things beyond drugs and alcohol. The high level summary is that addiction is usually less about the specific vice than it is a tool that helps you disconnect and find relief from inner turmoil and/or anxiety. The best thing you can do is to let yourself become open and curious about yourself and what you're going through from a holistic point of view, and then think about how you want to heal.
Simple, direct, democratic. $1000 is a good amount - for those in need it can be stretched to go a long way (just imagine the status quo alternative). For those who are more comfortable, it's an easy amount that can be saved, donated, or spent on discretionary items, all wins for us.
Re:Show HN: Goodreads Data Pipeline on Thursday February 27, 2020 @12:30PM (#22435477)
Amazon literally siphons off the data and has invested so little in its users.

Any recommendations for an alternative?

Apple has an opportunity to stand separate as a leader in user privacy first. But to do so means constantly standing up to government(s).
Re:$35,000 Tesla Model 3 Available Now on Thursday February 28, 2019 @11:11PM (#19277867)
Everyone in the comments crying "I'd never buy a car without a test drive first" as though you need dealerships to offer a chance to drive their cars. Why not order a test drive experience online to appear at your door, just like we do every day with Uber and Lyft?
Re:Reading in the Age of Constant Distraction on Tuesday February 12, 2019 @06:42PM (#19148878)
That's impressive!

I agree, I think where distraction comes into play is an inhibitor to actually get started reading.

this sounds terrible :(
Re:The Hand Licking Incident on Sunday January 06, 2019 @11:59PM (#18842890)
Choose curiosity and patience over judgement and commands. Such a simple message, and yet in practice it's so easy to fall for the (illusion of?) control, thinking "there's no time for curiosity or patience here."
Re:How Dystopian Fiction Shapes Political Attitudes on Thursday November 29, 2018 @09:35PM (#18566140)
Really good points. I found this video ("Is Utopia always Dystopia?") fascinating, delving into similar territory about expanding our idea of what utopia, and thus a better future, can be.

> Another thing I've learned is that we are extremely brittle about this practice, as a society. Our thinking about keeping logs tends to be black & white (a common sign of lack of education on the matter) and we hesitate or think in terms like "OCD" when people around us really leverage this practice[1]. IMO this is really unfortunate.

That's some wisdom

Re:Why SQLite Does Not Use Git on Monday April 16, 2018 @02:20PM (#16851386)
The refactored page brings up good points. Git has undeniably improved the world of software development, and is de facto the version control system to use in the majority of cases today.

That said, that doesn't make the points SQLite makes invalid.

Dunno what's up with the name (being silly I think) but anyway these are well done! Just watched the Malloc From Scratch one: https://www.destroyallsoftware.com/screencasts/catalog/mallo...
Re:Have you deleted your Facebook account? on Friday April 06, 2018 @01:41AM (#16771139)
I'd like to, but what is a reasonable alternative? I mainly want a social place to share and connect with friends, many of whom are not technical people. If they were, things would be much easier...

Too bad you can't read any of it with the garbled ^M rendering on GitHub.

Re:Sublime Text 3 Build 3132 released on Friday May 26, 2017 @11:21AM (#14424678)
IMHO: Sublime was once leading the way as a light weight, easily customizable editor. Since then, a slow release cycle and various compelling alternatives like Atom and VS Code, has led many users away. So in this thread you see people not discussing this release so much as the present day dynamic of Sublime and its place among these (arguably faster, better, more customizable) editors.
Re:Get started making music on Tuesday May 09, 2017 @09:09PM (#14305193)
This is beautiful and amazing. I love how each step builds on the previous, and uses pop examples to explain theory concepts. I've often wondered so many of the things presented in this, particularly around what common characteristics a genre has with respect to rhythm! Big kudos to the team who built this. I'd love to learn about the development backstory, as this feels a lot like an internal sideproject made by passionate individuals and less like a product idea dreamed up with requirements and specs.
This is a great review! He's so enthusiastic and appreciates so much about the game. Cool :)
Re:What the North Korean internet really looks like on Wednesday September 21, 2016 @02:12PM (#12550756)
Thanks for that. Any other NK-related films you recommend that go beyond surface shock value (e.g. Vice documentaries) or ignorant comedy (The Interview)?

> Facebook say after the disclosure: "We added protections for Facebook’s implementation of OpenSSL before this issue was publicly disclosed, and we're continuing to monitor the situation closely."

I wonder if Facebook found and fixed the bug locally beforehand? Makes me think of all the OSS libraries we use, without bothering to do much more in the way of static-analysis, etc besides simply making sure they compile.

Re:Deep C and C++ (2011) on Wednesday October 23, 2013 @11:26AM (#6599300)
Informative and thought-provoking presentation, but I think the mock interview format is a disservice, as with it comes individual ideas of what a good or useful interview is like.
I guess it's the hours spent panning around in Google Maps that's working against me
Wow this is captivating, but panning with the mouse on a desktop is so frustrating, the image movement is opposite what I expect! (browsing on a desktop, Windows/Chrome)
Re:Github is down :( on Thursday October 18, 2012 @04:27PM (#4670900)
I'm learning to love git. How awesome is it to be able to continue committing, branching and all that locally even when the server goes down?
