A great product doesn't need to pay for advertising because its customers readily see its value. Building a community can happen organically, but it goes better when you have an evangelist and a marketing budget to support community building. Having great Product Managers and QE testing is everything.
Re:How Thailand Resisted Colonization on Sunday August 23, 2026 @02:31AM (#49406486)
Thailand's rapid modernization and giving up 40% of its territory gave it time to embrace guns and a modern military. Sadly the widespread adoption of guns during this time period has a lasting impact today. Thailand has the highest number of gun deaths per capita of any asian country today. Resisting colonization in Thailand and overthrowing colonization in the US have embracing fire arms in common.
Re:What's in a PowerPoint File? on Sunday August 23, 2026 @02:20AM (#49406443)
Back in the day I supported Aldus Persuasion which was a competitor to Microsoft PowerPoint along with Harvard Graphics. The industry was moving from having service bureaus rasterize slides onto film slides to using computer screens.

When Microsoft started bundling Word, Excel and PowerPoint on the Mac platform where we dominated we realized we couldn't compete against a product that was basically being given away for free. The experience with slide and text animation lead to the purchase of Cosa After Effects which is still around and took full advantage of animating Photoshop and Illustrator files after the Adobe merger.

I hope this takes off and lowers the costs for folks wanting to do this to all kinds of dissections!
Trust is a valuable commodity that once lost is very hard to regain. LG's big brother installs has me questions buying anything LG to bring in my home.
Typical. Trump has empowered corruption. Probably pardon him too if he can pay the $1 million get of jail card.

Asha Sharma is managing the Xbox team like a hotel. Cut costs and boost profits. It works in the short run, but this is surely no way to run innovative game studios. Hopefully spinning these talented folks out will result in gaming innovation outside of Microsoft, because the vision inside Microsoft sure looks bleak.

So how many emigrants stay in Germany?

High memory prices are killing the PC gamer market. Sad to see Micron kill their Crucial consumer brand in favor of a complete focus on B2B.
Data centers and agrivoltaics will be the norm in space for a small but growing number of space denziens.

Speckx, Every downturn frees up talent that leads to the next generation of startups. If your finances can handle risk working for a startup or bootstrapping your own go for it. If you need a job now be sure to circle your connections to get better leverage on the inside track for closing those job interviews. Often times they already have a lead candidate the job was specifically written for. See if you have friends and old bosses that would do the same. I hope when you land where you are going you'll write an update.

Sodium ion is too low-density for GM EVs, but China has been plowing ahead with low-cost, low-range Chinese EVs.
Re:The Self-Tuning Piano [video] on Thursday June 11, 2026 @01:10PM (#48493148)
Hope he makes a fortune. $900 for a piano that heats up the wires and uses infrared to autotune your piano while you play is pretty amazing.

Re:The Death of the Brick and Mortar Toy Store on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @06:34PM (#48286915)
Retail is dead. Until crime and realistic lease rents are tackled I don't see it reviving. I do think there is a market for a store that sells new and used toys that uses customer service and local ownership to help their community. Similar to how some book stores have managed to survive. The key is to keep their costs low and to be small owner who is invested in their community.
Facebook used to be known for their benefits & perks. Now it is known as San Quentin. I hope their top talent leaves in droves.
Nice job!

Bending Spoons did the same thing with Evernote. Laid off US staff. Closed their Redwood City offices and hired a dev team in Italy to take over.

I hope Garmin sees your passion project and greenlights it for inclusion. You have the right approach to ensuring folks are at their optimal health to grow intellectually as a person.
Scary how quickly the US is falling off the map as a global destination. Banning folks from democratic stable countries like Costa Rica, Belize, Brazil, Uruguay & Mongolia serves no purpose.
