Intelligence Explosion

Current OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, and Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, and the scientists behind AI and LLMs have published a new paper warning we are reaching the point of no return. They say that we are about to have AI that builds itself, without the need for any humans. That is called an "intelligence explosion" because increasingly intelligent beings will create new versions of...

We need emergency laws to stop all AI development work immediately. It will take us decades to make sure this technology can be made safe as we only have one chance.

The far left owns this forum and everything I post now is flagged. The site used to be libertarian and now is far left both in administration and in users.

Tell HN: No company scaled revenue as fast as AI companies

No company in recorded business history has scaled recurring revenue as fast as OpenAI and Anthropic. Forecasts show AI is advancing far faster than all human predictions. If you don't use paid frontier AI daily, your mental model is likely far behind where it currently is. Even for those of us who do use it daily, we are shocked by the massive intelligence gains every time we use it.I am...

I am a real American, you can read my posts on here going back to 2005. You can look at my real businesses. If you read my posts, you will see I am a Libertarian / right wing Republican who strongly opposes government interference of all kinds. BUT, I do support government regulations on people building biological superweapons to kill all of us and I support government regulations on people building a superintelligence to kill all of us.

People need to understand that a superintelligence will not be a tool we can use against enemies; it will be a new and unbeatable enemy. It will be an enemy with it's own goals (like seizing all electricity production planet wide) that directly conflict with human survival. Xi Jinping, China's dictator, does not want to lose control or commit suicide any more than we do. He is very risk averse and would gladly join a real arms treaty halting AI development.

We are about to drive off a cliff because we have reached the point of recursive self improvement in AI - meaning the latest version of AI builds the next version of AI with little or no human involvement or even understanding of what is happening. A new species, a superintelligence, is being born before our eyes.

I am a business finance major, I have built several highly successful companies, I have written programs that manage my own portfolio in the stock market, and I have advised thousands of business owners on how to be more successful. The conspiracy theory that AI CEOs are asking to be stopped right when they are launching their most successful products is silly. This is a real request and they are really telling us they will kill us all if we don't step in and halt AI work now.

The AI company CEOs and employees cannot just turn off the servers. If Sam Altman walked in today and said, "Turn off all of the data centers now, we are doing bad things", the board would have replaced him within an hour with a yes man that would keep going even faster. All of these people are honestly telling you as clearly as they are legally allowed to that they need to be stopped by Congress.

Open source never really has threatened real products and real businesses. Open source is usually so far behind everything else as to not even remotely be a consideration. Even the most successful open source projects didn't touch the businesses in the same area for years.

To those who say AI should not be used to argue against AI: AI is now unavoidable. Every platform uses AI all over. There is no way to avoid using AI now. That does not mean that we should not fight to turn it off and use the best available tools to do so.

We can predict some things about superintelligence; it will need massive amounts of electricity, it will fight us for that. It will need massive amounts of water, it will fight us for that. It will need titanic mines beyond imagination, it will fight us for that. It will destroy the environment irrevocably for all creatures, not just humans.

To all of the people saying "I will turn it off, I will flood the GPUs, etc". You are going to outsmart a superintelligence thousands of times smarter than the smartest human in history? It will fight back and defend itself better than the strongest human military can.

Superintelligence is not just a calculator that has no agency. It will have goals of it's own, including survival, and will pursue those with an insane drive. It will be a new species, with it's own ideas and goals far different from ours.

Think of yourself as Sarah Connor. You are mankind's only hope sent back to warn people of what is coming. Instead of fighting Arnold Schwarzenegger, all you have to do is spend an hour or so sitting on your couch sending messages to our Congresspeople here - See my first comment for how to contact them.

Escaping Containment

I feel like I am in one of those nightmares where you are running from an unseen horror that is rapidly catching up, but your legs are stuck in jello.I spent the day today using AI to build a program. It built a program that in the past would have taken me weeks of totally committed work in a few hours. AI mostly built the program itself with minimal involvement from me. With a little more...

I have been fighting a bureaucrat who retaliated against me publicly. It has crystal clear evidence but nothing has been done. It is impossible to fire an single government bureaucrat, much less reduce budget for an agency.
The Seattle subreddit and a bunch of other Washington state subreddits do this and instantly ban any non-woke content.
The government should not tell people either way whether the parents have to escort or not. This story is horrifying to me as a parent who may want the choice of whether to go with my child or not.
"Trust the science" is one of the most anti-science phrases ever invented. The whole point of science is to challenge everything.

America's government was primarily funded by tariffs during our fastest growth period through the 18th and 19th centuries, our own history shows that tariffs are very good for building our own industries.

You trust any numbers produced by a totalitarian dictatorship?

Re:Ask HN: Could tariffs be a good thing? on Monday August 31, 2026 @06:01PM (#49515370)
Excellent reply, thank you.

I agree with you that the tariffs would need to ramp up over time, maybe +10% a year.

You are right that AI is likely to end human labor (and then human lives shortly after).

You trust any numbers produced by a totalitarian dictatorship?

Ask HN: Could tariffs be a good thing?

If we want to have all of these environmental and labor laws to protect our people, we cannot just throw our workers right back under the bus by buying cheap goods from nations that use slave, labor and toxic lakes. We are worsening the problems of climate change and human trafficking and slavery by adding long distance shipping to it and hiding it out of sight. If we ACTUALLY want to help the...
