Can we ban AI slop posts?

Yep, I stopped reading as soon as I saw the obvious AI language. It's a huge turnoff.

I didn't hear that one but I am a fan of Sklansky. And I also have a very vivid memory of learning the word, when I first heard the song Turn Around by They Might Be Giants. The connection with the song burned it into my memory.

Re:The Death of Free Shipping on Sunday February 18, 2024 @01:26PM (#39421594)
There's no such thing as a free lunch, regardless of how you distribute the costs. If a seller is refunding the cost of shipping on returns, they are passing that cost on to you in some other way (higher prices, membership fees, etc).

You could make the argument that if you return items more often than the average customer, your share of those costs may be getting subsidized by the customers who return items less often. But if you return items less often, you're probably worse off.

Re:Show HN: Explore Doctors' Disciplinary History on Monday October 09, 2023 @01:34PM (#37822954)
This is great to see. Some feedback: I entered the exact name of a doctor I knew would be in the database, formatted as "firstName lastName". The result was buried under 20 other less relevant matches. I had to search as "lastName, firstName", for it to come back as the first result.
Agreed. The HN Guidelines[1] already say "Please submit the original source" but I guess it doesn't get enforced very well.

This is the epitome of bad science journalism. The study says "X is correlated with Y", while the article says "X increases risk of Y".

Moderators, can you change this to the actual source study[1] and update the title?

> they proactively sent a doctor out a few times for housecalls

The article talks about these housecalls:

"The home health visits are designed to look for illnesses or codings that can increase risk scores. They very much are not looking for conditions that require medical intervention. This “free home health visit” scam is so profitable that an entire industry has sprung up of companies that send nurses out on behalf of the insurance companies."
