Re:Person Finder: Boston Marathon Explosions on Monday April 15, 2013 @09:25PM (#5555606)
This is helpful, I passed the link to a friend whose cousin ran in the race.

And the whining in this thread is deplorable.

Re:Amazon "Add to cart" button redesigned on Sunday March 31, 2013 @02:48AM (#5467947)
Sarcasm? Am I missing something?
Re:Sorry Google; you can Keep it to yourself on Thursday March 21, 2013 @12:17AM (#5412881)
In order to have me as a user, you're going to maintain this until the heat death of the universe. I don't care if it's free! I deserve it!
Re:Use a VPN or Your Google Searches Are Public on Monday March 18, 2013 @03:32PM (#5396594)
Not an issue for HTTPS searching.
Re:Google Keep, a New Service for Taking Notes on Monday March 18, 2013 @01:01PM (#5395468)
This is some awesome commentary here.

Nobody even read the goddamn article. Bunch of parrots.

Re:Get the perfect Google Voice number, Grep-style on Sunday March 17, 2013 @08:26PM (#5391717)
Remember, you're not their user, you're their product. Ad companies are the real customers.
Re:Getting into the tech scene when you have no skills on Saturday March 16, 2013 @02:14AM (#5384661)
Circular reference. You'll follow links until you die.
Re:Let's avoid designing like this on Saturday February 23, 2013 @09:36PM (#5272502)
Forbes isn't crafted by UX designers for reading pleasure, it's mangled by SEO experts to optimize user-hostile metrics for better placement in the Google.
Re:The Chromebook Pixel’s best feature on Saturday February 23, 2013 @08:25PM (#5272291)
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I talk about aspect ratios with average consumers. Most people really do believe--probably through HDTV marketing--that wider screens are better. The lion's share of most people's time on the Internet is spent reading and scolling vertically, yet our devices are optimized for watching little sixty second movie clips at a time. Why wouldn't you want to make the 95% case more pleasurable at the expense of a few black bars on the top and bottom of your movie? Besides, most Internet videos need to be upscaled to fill the screen anyways, the detail is mostly interpolated anyhow.
Re:DOS is long dead, long live FreeDOS on Wednesday February 06, 2013 @02:47AM (#5175355)
This is amazing. Quite an impressive demonstration of Native Client's capabilities.
Re:Facebook cuts off friend data from 'competing' startup Voxer on Saturday January 19, 2013 @01:29PM (#5084180)
s/Facebook/Google/ and you have the contacts import debacle of a couple years ago.
Re:Microsoft's ARM blunder: Why Windows RT was DOA on Saturday January 19, 2013 @12:46PM (#5084035)
The bar for "minimum" has been raised since the iPhone's release.
Re:Facebook cuts off friend data from 'competing' startup Voxer on Saturday January 19, 2013 @04:09AM (#5083006)
IIRC This was Google's rationale in disallowing FB from importing contacts programmaticaly - FB wants to hoover contacts from everywhere but refuses to give data back.
Re:A cry for help on Thursday January 17, 2013 @10:15PM (#5076871)
I'll pick up the mantle and use wp-svbtle on my blog.
Re:Be careful with JS numbers on Sunday January 13, 2013 @10:12PM (#5053098)
For some reason, people here think Javascript is the best shit ever.
Re:Metasploit Rails 3 Remote Code Execution Hours Away on Thursday January 10, 2013 @12:51AM (#5035690)
Good thinking. Might also be good to prune some auth tokens and app specific passwords for your Google accounts, too. https://accounts.google.com/IssuedAuthSubTokens
Re:Inception Explained – HTML + CSS Experiment on Thursday January 03, 2013 @02:42AM (#5001388)
It's neat, but flicking my scrollwheel that many times gave me RSI. :)
Re:Fixing the computer guy posture [pdf] on Monday December 31, 2012 @04:47PM (#4991024)
This is serious stuff. I'm dealing with really demoralizing lower back issues of my own, probably from years of crummy posture. Pay attention, kids.

Re:Instagram hit with class action lawsuit over new TOS on Tuesday December 25, 2012 @10:43PM (#4968066)
This is SOP for tech journalism - throw out some inaccuracies to goad people into offering corrections, leaving some gaping holes, maybe a bit of ad hominem here and there to incite some rage, then corral people into your comment section for even more precioussss page views.
Re:Github experiencing major service outages across all services. on Saturday December 22, 2012 @07:30PM (#4957994)
I can do the same thing with CVS?
Re:Want to contact a stranger on Facebook? Pay $1 on Friday December 21, 2012 @12:42AM (#4951656)
People don't have defenses like spam filters for FB like they do on email, because that channel was relatively clean of unwanted messages.

It's sleazy because they have weaned people off open and free protocols into their walled garden and now they are going in for the kill. It's like how Nestle gave baby formula to African mothers so that they would stop lactating, then they cut off the supply and charged the mothers ridiculous prices so they could continue nourishing their babies.

Re:Programming Languages - Hammer Principle on Sunday December 16, 2012 @05:55PM (#4929933)
Eh? Go: "Based on 7308 responses from 586 people, this is the picture we've built up of Go."

Vote early, vote often, I guess.

Re:Ads may come to Instagram on Friday December 14, 2012 @12:33AM (#4919745)
Not for startups! They're special.
In an update to the article, the author concedes that this attack was only made possible because they didn't go through the real licensing process, which cryptographically signs the resources and protects against things like XAML tampering. Wow, that's slimy.

If the premise of the article is debunked, then the article should be taken down. Keeping it up for pageviews raises profits for Ars but incurs big externalities on MS, as it spreads misinformation and FUD.

Don't tell their marketing department that. I want to see them more stones cast from that glass house of theirs.
Re:Google Maps for iOS on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @11:42PM (#4914210)
I wonder if Apple is still willing to pay the 80/20 piper with iOS maps? It must be awfully expensive to keep up on data quality.
Re:I'm trying to be less hyperbolic on Sunday December 09, 2012 @04:06PM (#4896128)
I'm pretty maxxed out on ingesting hyperbole from the deluge of punched-up linkbait/SEO'd articles over the past few years.
I am also tired of the amount of time we spend patting each other on the back. I learned node.js 36 hours ago and here's my Hello World! 230 points! That's wonderful, but that front page is precious and we should upvote things that are useful to the community, instead of being tools for external affirmation for eager beavers.
