Re:The RubyGems "Security Incident" on Friday October 10, 2025 @04:23PM (#45543369)
If you consider the timing of this, there were supply chain attacks happened in other ecosystems and changing the root password seems to be the right approach and it feels justified to me.
Re:Rubygems.org AWS Root Access Event – September 2025 on Friday October 10, 2025 @03:57PM (#45543099)
RC seems to be incompetent and malicious, the original hostile take over is explained as a security measure. But in reality, you can simply just take away the ability to deploy and leave access to contribute to the repo untouched for people outside of the RC organization.

But claiming that you care about security while missing a basic step of rotating credentials once a member has moved away is pathetic. God help Rubygems.org and the users.

Re:Why LLMs Can't Build Software on Sunday August 17, 2025 @02:25PM (#44933722)
> The author does not understand what LLMs and coding tools are capable of today.

Not really, I would say they used it well and understood the limitations of LLM exactly. No matter how much polished the output or how good it is, LLMs can't build mental models of a codebase like a human does because they are just statistical machines.

Re:Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport on Tuesday August 27, 2024 @09:33AM (#41367349)
Illegal things are going to happen mostly in physical world regardless of where they plan it. The government can catch them while they're at it or after. The governments are fear-mongering and creating a public narrative to support mass surveillance.

There are only very few illegal things that can happen within the telegram app like fraud, or minor abuse. Those must be reported by end users and individual actions can be taken against them.

What the government is asking is a massive backdoor for surveillance in the name of preventing crime, but they decide what they can monitor. It is a pandora box and if you open it there is no going back. Even if the current government is asking it with purest intentions and manage it well, the same can not be said for any next elected governments.

> People who use third party apps are outliers. They do not make Reddit any money

I do agree with you. Bu the outliers usually feed the site with good content. There is a quote by Paul G (or someone)

> whatever the hackers do on the weekends, normal people will be doing regularly in 10 years.

This is a recital from memory, prone to be watered down. But the idea is that the outliers are the ones that makes it worthwhile to be in the community. If they are gone because for any reason, landed somewhere else, the normal users will eventually move away. It is not going to be visible immediately, but will have negative effects in the long run.

hashnode.com checks all the criteria you mentioned. Worth checking about.
Re:Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022? on Wednesday December 21, 2022 @09:43AM (#34081303)
the dynamo db paper was a great read. I was reading it repeatedly just for the fun of the numerous topics/choices it introduced to me.
Are you my elder self? I'm almost in the same path and same situation but just few years younger than you. Looking at the answers here.
Re:Ask HN: Which Covid vax did you select and why? on Monday September 13, 2021 @04:40AM (#28509113)
You guys were getting options?

I was looking for vaccine madly to be opened up for my age group in India, I had to go with the first available option which is CovieShield.

Re:Ask HN: What can you do when “unsubscribe” doesn't work? on Monday September 13, 2021 @04:25AM (#28509044)
I'll mark it as SPAM, from the 2nd or 3rd time.

I marked our PM's marketing as SPAM because they're sending emails to me when I never signed up for one.

I sometimes get bored and see some interesting postings on linkedIn.

I try to apply where I'll be redirected either to their homegrown site or some random recruitment site in which I need to create account and fill myriads of forms before applying.

I might do it if I'm in dire need of a job, otherwise no thanks. Companies needs to make it easier to apply for jobs.

Re:Ask HN: Why isn't there a Medium killer yet? on Thursday May 13, 2021 @10:30AM (#27142466)
Hashnode is very close.
These things have been deprecated from and removed. PHP 7+ is really matured and took a different direction and now is a matured, great language IMO.

This is such a great article man. Love for the effort you put into this article.

I seriously wish I had teachers and schools like this. I used to imagine the four strokes when I was in school but it is very hard to relate all the moving parts and how everything connects together in that age where I've never used a motorcycle or a car.

Thanks for writing this.

This. People can't give specific actionable advice without knowing a little bit about your situation. The generic advice have very less chance of working for anyone.
I read around 30 pages every day. I don't limit myself to either fiction or non-fiction. I always try to read a healthy mixture of the two.

Also in non-fiction, I don't limit myself to only programming, I like to read on totally unrelated topics too. I don't have a rule that all books should be finished, so I sometimes close books if I don't like them at the moment.

For what I'm getting, I take notes while reading. If the book is really good, I go through the notes and try to summarise the book. I started summarising only a few months ago and I feel like it helps in retaining more of the book.

But I would recommend you to try to enjoy reading first, once you've started enjoying doing the act, reading the hardest book will be easier.

Existing files will stay unaffected as far as I understood.
Thanks. I have it in my list but haven't got to read it yet. Will start after the current one.
The only company I know that operates based on how you described is Gumroad.

Unfortunately they don't have any open positions at the moment, you can keep an eye on here https://www.notion.so/Jobs-f43f816013b2405aa41ddefb663a4a38
