Ask HN: Want to program less and do more high level work

The more I work as a software engineer the less I like programming. Been doing it for 6+ years on Senior level and just hate having to deal with meaningless things all the time.Be it boilerplate or spending a whole day on unit tests or doing something else fiddly or debugging issues. Just hate this type of meaningless low level work. What are my options to do high level work that doesn't involve...

the new Dell XPS is just one example, ticks all your boxes. If you think nothing compares to Mac you clearly haven't been paying attention to Windows laptops.
You are paying a pretty decent chunk of this for the mac OS too, because you can get similar spec Windows laptop for half the price
Why would you pay so much for mac OS and end up using free linux?

Would be 18k if you don't pay any tax, which is probably very doable in India considering

I find this type of business very interesting, could I ask more details on how you begin and what you need to know to start this type of business?
Most American thing I read today. Wish my manager would talk about how to help me make more money and what to do to improve. Don't know about you but all my managers in EU just talk lame work stuff and actively avoid any pay related issues and improvement points.
That's good advice but will have to say that it is unfortunately out of your control. It has a lot to do with genetics than people want to admit.

I have health and mental conditions that interfere with my mental abilities and makes career progression difficult and it's all due to being born with those.

So yeah do eat healthy and exercise but also be realistic. Some people have it easy and take it for granted, other don't, such is life.

Re:Ask HN: Is programming a “young man's game”? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @08:49AM (#33531537)
This is all true but note you've still started grinding in your 20s. I'm thinking more like if you take a teen or early 20s and they grind 10k hours on leetcode and you take a 30s or older and they put 10k hours too who would come ahead? My bet would be on the young ones.

Ask HN: Is programming a “young man's game”?

I've heard this being said about mathematics and we know that both programming and math are logic based and pretty much require the same thinking techniques and programming is derived from math. So, wouldn't it be true that it's a young man's game for programming too?You only see top programmers who started as kids and probably won some Olympiads and programming competitions, and this continued...

Ask HN: How to get started creating content?

I want to start blogging, creating youtube videos and some other type of online presence on tech related topics. However, I don't know how to start and how to baby step my way into it.I used to be very creative as a teenager and young adult and had many ideas on creating funny videos and game related content, but that died as I grew older and now I feel like I don't have any creativity left,...

Re:Ask HN: Quiet quitting in FAANG doesn't work now? on Thursday September 15, 2022 @04:41AM (#32848983)
Imagine every top company and SWE in general being reduced down to LC
Where do you even find these remote US jobs, they are either some big US companies that have local offices or US startups that don't take non-US people?
yet CS stuff is exactly what they ask you for on interviews. I really don't know how interviewers keep up with this or they just read the answers of their own questions
Re:On the Unhappiness of Software Developers (2017) on Saturday September 03, 2022 @04:04AM (#32699776)
Remote made me very isolated, and especially in a team where we are 3 people and everyone else is 15 years older than me with kids and I have nothing in common with them. I could go do random meetups outside work but that's usually weekends as I live further away from bigger city, so that means that at least 5 days of the week I stay home barely talking to anyone.

at least your interview LC questions are easy
Re:3D print and build a 164mm f/2.5 lens for less than $15 on Thursday August 25, 2022 @04:41AM (#32591176)
but when can I 3D print a house?
I understand exactly what OP means and I've been looking for something like this too.

When it comes to sports I think it needs to be something with lower physical bar such as table tennis, archery, shooting. Unlikely you can compete on world level but at least locally.

For other things I think certain computer games might do but you will be competing with kids that play 12 hours every day so again you can only compete on small scale and in my experience online competitive games attract the most toxic people. You can try Geoguessr which I think is your best option.

Then you have the more arty skills such as stand-up comedy, music production, cooking all can be competitive if you are into any of these and your age shouldn't matter much in fact it might help.

I don't think you can become competitive programmer if you haven't started at young age and went to good math schools and won a few local competitions/olympiads. Learning this at 30 will get you only so far
