The examples are not very dark-mode friendly
I'll use it next week for a diagram I've been trying to create for work and I'll let you know if I run into anything it can't handle.
This is a wonderful idea that fills a gap that has caused me much pain! When it's more stable I'll be looking for (or creating) an Obsidian plugin, a VS Code extension, etc.

Opening reladraw/docs/index.html to make a diagram then copy-pasting to save it is a little cumbersome.

Show HN: Complete Family Tree Viewer

https://github.com/erikshelley/complete-family-tree-viewer

While the U.S. is celebrating Memorial Day, it seems like a good time to share this genealogy tool I made.It can show the entire family tree for a person in a GEDCOM file (all of their relatives and in-laws) without any crossing lines and with lots of control over the styling.I couldn't find any other software that does this, except maybe Gramps. Hopefully people will find it useful.

TDD Makes a Lot of Sense with Agentic Development

I started creating an application with the help of an AI Agent a few weeks ago. I told it what I wanted the app to do and it created code. I coded novel pieces of the application myself since there were no on-line examples available for what I wanted (this is the reason for creating the application in the first place).Eventually I decided I should have some tests. This is a bit ironic since I...

"Owl rights reserved"
I've been using Agent DVR for recording, alerts and local storage though the alerts rely on a non-local MQTT broker (HiveMQ) due to the double-NAT setup my ISP imposes, otherwise I would have used a local Mosquitto broker. Here is a diagram I put together about my setup. https://i.imgur.com/mAmP9rA.png
Re:“The Martian” + Starship on Wednesday June 30, 2021 @05:30PM (#27693605)
I was hoping this article would be about "The Hail Mary" which is an amazing book by the author of The Martian that involves a starship. I listened to the audio book and basically binged the last quarter of it. It's rare to find something so good I prefer it over streaming TV shows & movies.
My site made over $20k last year from Amazon. I've always known I could lose this income at any moment due to a change in Amazon's policies or a change in Google's algorithms.

Luckily this change shouldn't impact me too significantly since my primary niche will be in the 7% bracket and I was making 7-8% previously.

My site makes a couple grand per month from Amazon commissions. You have to sign up for each different Amazon program separately (.com, .co.uk, .ca, .de, .fr, etc). There is a program for India.

Re:Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016? on Sunday December 11, 2016 @11:19AM (#13151685)
$50k from investment earnings (index funds, mostly 401k - I'm in my 40s).

$20k from a website I built a couple years ago (searchable product catalog with Amazon affiliate links).

Re:Indie Hackers: Learn how developers are making money on Thursday August 11, 2016 @06:54PM (#12272248)
Sorted by revenue only seven make more than my Amazon affiliate site. I'm not sure if that type of site would fit in there but I did develop quite a bit of code for it. It's not a review site but rather a searchable product catalog.
I have an Amazon Associates website and I've considered trying to use ads to generate traffic. This adds another step in the process vs what the article describes. Users have to click on the ad, click on my affiliate link, then make a purchase.

Users of my site click on an affiliate link about 40% of the time and those that do make a purchase about 2.5% of the time with an average commission of $5. This means I make about $0.05 per visitor so I would need ads with a CPC less than that. In my niche this does not seem remotely possible.

Luckily I'm getting over 1,200 visitors per day without paying for them.

Currently my average commission is about $5.
Re:Ask HN: Your Passive Income Suggestions? on Thursday February 04, 2016 @09:44AM (#11034172)
My site does not have any reviews. Each product overview is just a description of the product and its specifications. Rather than telling people which one to buy I give them the ability to find the one that best fits their criteria. I rank all of the products by how popular they are and I think many people trust this more than they do a review.
Re:Ask HN: Your Passive Income Suggestions? on Wednesday February 03, 2016 @07:59PM (#11031215)
I'd prefer not to but I'll check back a few more times to see if there are any questions about my post to answer.
Re:Ask HN: Your Passive Income Suggestions? on Wednesday February 03, 2016 @07:57PM (#11031202)
I never noticed before that this site doesn't seem to have any way to send private messages. I guess if one wants to be reached they have to share a way publicly.
Re:Ask HN: Your Passive Income Suggestions? on Wednesday February 03, 2016 @03:45PM (#11029613)
Yes it did. I have spent a lot more time researching and documenting specs than I have writing code. The good news is that I don't mind that type of work. I often build spreadsheets for fun to compare things I'm thinking of buying so I just took that to another level.
Re:Ask HN: Your Passive Income Suggestions? on Wednesday February 03, 2016 @02:17PM (#11028879)
I have had some success in affiliate marketing using an approach that I think many on Hacker News could duplicate. I launched my Amazon affiliate site about a year-and-a-half ago and its earnings have increased by about $100 per month with December being the first time I earned over $2,000 in a month.

The approach is to find a type of product where Amazon has thousands of listing but the specifications are not very accurate and the filtering criteria are limited, and where there are highly active forums with people talking about and asking about these products. Then you build a proper searchable catalog for the products. Include lots of search criteria, sorting criteria, side-by-side comparison, recommended accessories, anything that would be useful for people looking to buy them.

Once my catalog contained over 1,000 models I started replying to posts on forums with a link to my site that provided what they were looking for. People loved the site and it wasn't long before they were posting links to it to answer each others questions. That's all it took to start ranking on Google which is now responsible for 3/4 of my traffic.

Initially this is not passive income. The first few months are a lot of work for very little money. Eventually the balances shifts to the point where additional work is only needed if you want to keep growing. Amazon's product advertising API allows you to get current prices, availability and popularity (sales ranking) to keep everything fresh.

This may be my favorite from this thread simply because there are individual volume sliders for each sound.
Thanks for the link (41 yr old site creator).

I only recently got interested in mechanical watches. It's fun to have a mechanical marvel on my wrist for those times when I don't want to reach into my pocket to tell the time using an electronic marvel.

I'm not sure if I'd ever get a smart watch. Perhaps. I actually feel kind of attached to my automatic. If I stop wearing it for more than two days it will stop running. That just seems cruel to the little guy.

I recently started an affiliate business. I'm not sure if it will make $500 per month but it just made $60 in its second month so I'm cautiously optimistic.

For some types of purchase I do a lot of research to find the right item for me. I actually enjoy the researching process so an affiliate site is a good match for me. A big part of the work is providing useful content which you can only do after performing good research.

My site is a huge searchable catalog of products with affiliate links to Amazon if they're for sale on Amazon, otherwise I provide non-affiliate links to wherever they are for sale. Most affiliate sites are based on product reviews but my site's approach is to provide more search options with more accurate data (data that is often incorrect on Amazon).

If I estimate the hours I've put into it so far I'm surely making less than $1 per hour for my time but as the earnings increase and my new hours decrease it might eventually be a wise investment.

Re:Raising a moral child on Tuesday April 15, 2014 @12:04PM (#7592564)
Your comment really made me stop and think. It does seem like a contradiction at first: when your child does something good praise their character not their action, when your child does something well praise the action rather than calling them smart or talented.

After some thought though I can see it as consistent since when they do something well you can praise them for being hard-working (character).

Re:Wind powered vehicle nearly 3 times faster than downwind on Saturday November 06, 2010 @02:51PM (#1877469)
So the wind pushes the cart forward, which turns the wheels, which spin the propeller, which pushes the cart forward even more - a feedback loop. Eventually various frictions and inefficiencies equal the input energy from the tailwind and you get a stable speed.

To go faster than the tailwind you need a gearing ratio that spins the propeller quite a bit faster than the wheels are turning - leverage.

In my experience pigs are easier to train than dogs (they learn more quickly) and are less easily distracted. I trained pigs for 4-H and showed them at the county fair. I could walk a pig around with just a cane to tap it and keep it going the way I wanted. Bringing my dog to the fair would likely take all of my strength trying to hold the leash. Dogs require acclimation to novel stimulating situations or they forget their training. Pigs don't seem to care.

The interesting thing to me was that if we forgot to feed them they would always seem to be able to take apart the fence and get out to eat. The patriarch got out and visited the other pens before he passed away which reinforced my feeling that they treated each other like family.

Read the first google hit for pig intelligence if I haven't already gone on too long on the subject.
