Completely right. I think what is suprising about this wave of automation is that until now automation happened to more manual, blue collar work. I for one didn't really think that it will happen to software development up until some months ago.
The crazy thing is that government funded a lot of this hyper growth for these AI companies. Very similar to Boeing / McDonnel Douglas.
I don't think today's AI labs would exist without the internet
> I don't think it's profit

Hahaha good one. Profit is the whole reason of existence for for-profit companies. Sure, companies might start with some ideologic grain of thought. But as soon as you reach a certain size, all that goes flying out of the window.

Agree
Re:DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:29PM (#50187927)
Is it only faster or also higher quality (whatever that means haha)?
Re:Claude Duet on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:27PM (#50187893)
I don't know. I think the moat will come from enterprise deals and deep enterprise integration, like it does for almost all software products so far.

I think for B2C products to have moat you need some type of network like social media apps. Or can you think of any other examples of B2C software products that have a strong moat?

Interesting, thanks!

Can somebody explain like I'm five what this exactly is? How are providers like Fireworks or Novita providing inference today? Do they use some other inference engine software? If yes, what is the advantage of the DeepSeek inference engine?
There are already many open-source Jira alternatives. So why are not every > 100 person company just hosting and using those for free instead of paying tens of thousands of dollars to Atlassian?
> No company is going to pay e.g. $15/user/month for Jira when they can get the same thing for free - better even

It wouldn't be for free though, would it? People need to build and maintain it (and there's LLM cost associated with it too).

Let's say you are a 5 person start-up. It makes much more sense to pay $15/user/month for services like Jira, Slack, Email etc. then to build and maintain everything yourself.

For super large companies, it might make financial sense to build some of the tools in-house. But then again, that probably already made sense for LLMs were a thing. But there is more to it than just the pure financials (i.e. salary).

Yes, good point.
We develop a Shopify app. Sometimes, we need collaborator access to a customer's store to check for a bug or do a setup. Today, I noticed that Shopify requires me to identify via passport or ID before letting me request acceess to a customer's store.

What the hell? Why do I need to upload my ID to Shopify for this? This is already a super secure process where my customer needs to confirm my account to give access.

When I opened the site, I started hearing a sound that I never heard before: My MacBook Pro M4's fans. I checked ActivityMonitor and Firefox was using a significant CPU share. Are they mining crypto in the background or what's happening?

Conversations over beer are always better than texting in online forums or social media =)
Re:Were Software Engineers blue-collar workers all along? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @06:21AM (#50069441)
I agree that we need to change our typical understanding of "working class" to not only include "blue collar" jobs. In the sense of class warfare, it's more meaningful to distinguish between capital owners and dependent workers. But sure, there's a bit of a difference if you're a lawyer making 200 $ / hour vs. a minimum wage cashier at McDonalds.

However, as we have seen, even high paying jobs like software engineering where I and most of my colleagues long assumed we don't need to organize can get exploited almost over night.

I have an old account and agree with the post you are replying to. But unlike you, I see capitalism as depressing, hopeless and despairing.

I am also not from a totalitarian country =)

Haha, do you think those people are concernced with ethics?
Very well put

> If I were OpenAI or Anthropic I’d be racing to make their products as sticky as possible bc ppl will flock to what’s cheapest otherwise.

That's what I have been saying: OpenAI or Anthropic's moat will not be the models, but how they integrated into enterprise clients and make it super hard for them to switch to a different provider. Kind of like Microsoft Office does it. Or Slack. Or Google Work. None of these products are better in any sense, they just cater to the needs of big enterprise clients in another way (customer relationship, sales, maybe compliance) and make it hard to switch

Yes, of course this is the real reason. This and regulatory capture. Anybody believing a single word those CEOs say must have been living under a rock for the past 20 years.
Re:Obscura: The first VPN that can't log your activity on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @09:15AM (#49815612)
Agree fully. Also, using another VPN is simple and possible. Using another mobile platform than iOS or Android is virtually impossible or only possible with a lot of real limitations in your daily life.

And to reply to the parent of this comment: I also wouldn't judge others just because they are a Mullvad customer or whatever.

Are you arguing that the reason that the public transportation system in SF sucks is because of drug addicts? LOL

I think many people have absolutely stopped giving money to US corporations that are run by fascists like Musk or DHH. Of course, this is and will never be the majority (many people don't care or don't know), but I am certain it's a non-trivial number of people.
