Re:Spain train crash: 'At least 10 dead' in high-speed collision on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:13AM (#50271717)
Let me state some facts:

The current government has been in power for more than 8 years. Eight years. To deflect blame to a currently non existent right wing movement is real mental gymnastics on your end.

Close collaborators of the current president are in jail due to corruption, much of it from stealing from ADIF.

It's the second time in a year something like this happens.

All my thoughts go to the victims of this tragedy.

Not sure if to give credibility and we will soon know but I bet the panels they are using are 120hz rate panels, locked to 60hz. Reading it from multiple sources. No clear data we will have to wait for ifixit
They are permisionless protocols, I don’t see how they can even forbid it. It shows a level of ignorance or ingenuity which I can comprehend.

There are also memecoins which as they rise, buy the underlying stock.

Being totally naive and asking an honest question: who or are they protecting themselves from? These instruments in reality are at most paired assets but most times have nothing to do with the real stock.

Re:The new iPad mini on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:55AM (#50255460)
For movies, 30fps is good enough, but for a screen which you interact with, the change to 120hz is dramatic. And there is no reason why they should not be adding it.
Though I think we gotta take models seriously and have safeguards around them, this is not about national security. This about frontier labs freaking out after all that DeepSeek and other non US labs are pulling off lately.

I work for a bank, and local models are banned. I have been waiting for Opus 5.5 to be enabled, and it’s still being evaluated. Things take their time, models are evaluated, and risk assessed. There is nothing new here. And I am pretty much certain such practices have been in place in critical US agencies since a while.

A blanket ban is nothing more than a desperate attempt to delay the inevitable.

Re:Crypto thieves sell hardware wallets with secret eSIM on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:47PM (#50158524)
Lots of downvotes for people asking questions out of ignorance.

You are right, it’s virtual impossible. You gotta trust the supplier.

Re:Crypto thieves sell hardware wallets with secret eSIM on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @02:20AM (#50083148)
You are right, anti tampering, and not even that. Air gapping protects you from other threat.

Lattice for example, has strong anti-tampering features.

Then what is the best solution aside from tightly controlling the supply chain?

Re:Crypto thieves sell hardware wallets with secret eSIM on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @05:34PM (#50079154)
I would love to know if I can use one of this to get unlimited data worldwide.

Jokes aside, keystone wallets are air gapped. And not air gapped but awesome the lesser known but imo best of all, gridplus lattice1.

Heck, even a trezor, despite their mail provider being hacked, is better.

I, however, dont endorse the iPhone idea.

Just don’t buy ledger, terrible company. Many of my friends are getting endless spam because of them. The key backup is a disaster after they promised it was not possible to retrieve it. Their software stack is closed source.

This is imo the last nail in the coffin for them. They should refund all the money lost, and issue a worldwide recall.

Lots to hate about them.

Not as fast for me. I was able to snatch a spark before the horrible price hike, and I have it at 40/50tok/sec. Before I had the great 3090 setup which is what led me to get the spark. That 3090 is now relegated to creating videos of my kids doing dumb things.

I now backordered two more sparks, before the hike... hoping they will honor the agreed price and dont cancel on me. They should arrive in a month,

Its evidently clear the frontier labs won't keep on giving us cheap inference for much longer. I also watch in disbelief how people say a sub is cheaper, which probably is. But you loose on so many other things (privacy, predictability, censorship...)

Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Monday October 05, 2026 @03:21AM (#49961689)
They could easily give us a system that can be easily upgraded. At least the SSD.

And I would inmediately put an order for a 256GB Mac Studio with 1TB SSD, if I were to know that SSD can be upgraded later on. I dont even mind if I have to buy premium SSD upgrades from Apple.

But locking the system in and knowing the decision is final? No thanks. And no way I am shelling 18k or whatever outrageous sum they ask for 8 extra TB.

It might be they are leaving money off the table with their greed.

Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Monday October 05, 2026 @03:15AM (#49961652)
Because Apple keeps on selling devices with 256GB SSD and this takes between 8-14GB of very valuable disk space, for a feature that most of us don't really use.

It doesn't help that Apple never understood what Siri is and how it should work.

Unrelated... just use your just locally installed qwen 3.8 and instruct it to figure out why you arent at 16x.

For me, I didnt know I was on 4x and I was able to, giving it enough permissions, with a good harness like PI, to figure things out and go 4x -> 8x -> 16x.

It probably will take some opening the case and switching ssds around, but it's amazing how powerful these models have become.

As somebody developing hobby apps, there are things i just can’t use. Take an example cloudflare workers. I recently worked on a poc for an app. I ended up hosting it at home due to the uncertainty.

The caps were very generous but I wasn’t going to spend a minute worrying about what if a malicious actor took over

Re:MiMo-v2.6-Pro: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @12:27PM (#49803869)
I have a 20x sub and it feels like the 20$ sub eight months ago. I can easily burn it in an afternoon, and I don't have many projects.

According to API usage, they cut you off at around the equivalent of 900$ of API usage, whatever that means. It's very difficult to track all this, and very subjective. What validates me is that of all my friends I am not the only one.

I can only imagine the 100$ users must be feeling the rug being pulled even harder.

Anyway, this has led me to get a Spark, and a second is on the way.

Re:Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27? on Monday September 21, 2026 @11:35AM (#49788634)
I still have to find anybody using Siri on his Mac

Please tell me what the use case is. Somebody somewhere must find it useful otherwise it would not be so prominent.

This a genuine question btw not trying to be sarcastic or dismissive

He is a smart guy, and his podcast is good, if you can switch your brain off whenever they talk Trump and politics I mean.

His posture about all this nonsense has been clear for months already

I believe the Chinese government fully supports for the American AI labs to pace the frontier, no need to enter an agreement with them on that respect.

Re:Major Math Breakthrough by AI on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @05:29AM (#49607864)
Title of the post is not really about a breakthrough by AI but a human breakthrough plus an ongoing dispute where the authors claim OpenAI trained on their private chats and then tried to claim the proof as their own.

Something like “Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge on AI-assisted fluid dynamics proofs and OpenAI” would have been a more appropriate non clickbaity title.

The proof was not made by AI but AI was used to create it. For what I gather the OpenAI threw massive compute to try to front run the authors and proceeded to blackmail them.

This is a Millenium price proof btw.

In omp you can also have the advisor role, which is off by default, you can enable it with /advisor command. It acts as a model that reviews the default agent's work in the background.

I am omp pilled, but as the other comments say, any good harness lets you do this in one or the other way.

unrelated: all my homies use their claude subs with omp, and aside from sometimes having to rety the connections, it works, and nobody got banned (yet)

Re:New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:39AM (#49435970)
The cleaning cloth went down in price about 50%

There is some consolation there

Re:New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:38AM (#49435951)
A part of my brain can’t process acquiring a Mac Mini M5 Pro knowing that they sell M6 despite being aware that it is just a weaker processor.

It will get worse with the MacBook ultra rocking a M5 too.

Apple’s marketing department is gonna kill me.

'They are an environmental catastrophe'

This for me the main source of concern. I am having a blast vibe coding. I understand my job is at risk. But I am totally oblivious to the fact that they are accelerating climate change.

FIFA is also a terrible employer

Got friends working for them as developers. They ran away. In months

Re:The coolest use for the Vision Pro on Thursday July 30, 2026 @02:21PM (#49113706)
The resolution but specially the pass through is what kills it for me.

Fix those and I am a buyer, at any price.

Re:The coolest use for the Vision Pro on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @05:34PM (#49103375)
I did it, it’s possible.

It’s also a terrible experience. Pixelated. Laggy. Can’t see where the keyboard is… it’s half baked.

I can work max one hour then I give up.

Re:The coolest use for the Vision Pro on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @05:32PM (#49103357)
I keep on hearing it’s a flop, but where I live, Switzerland, they don’t sell it. So I can’t really say.

And I am not even talking about the badly taken product decisions for such a great headset but… how can they get devs onboarded for an app ecosystem for a device that can only be bought in a handful of countries?

Clearly Apple sold it and did their best so that it fails.
