Ask HN: Searching] Blog Post About Saturating AWS Instance Bandwidth

I recently read a blog post (that I'm pretty sure I found here on HN) about a person who had access to AWS P5 instances and decided to write their program to saturate the full bandwidth of these instance types. It was a multi part series and I'd only read a couple of the posts. Now I've been tearing my hair apart searching for this post but can't seem to find it.Anyone knows what I'm talking...

Ehh.. Only pages between 18:00 and 09:00 count for extra pay. Which means it affects your free / personal time. Where I am, the people care a lot about work not intruding on their personal time, so the perverse incentives are reduced.
Re:Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday on Saturday November 23, 2024 @07:56PM (#42225165)
It also becomes a good deterrent against useless requests. You get pinged on Slack at 10pm? Just ask them to file a ticket with a page-worthy severity. When its not nearly as important as that, even external managers will hesitate to do that since they need to explain if the ticket was worth 150% base pay for 3 hours plus the extra PTO next day.

Significantly reduces the number of pages.

Re:Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday on Saturday November 23, 2024 @02:16PM (#42223102)
I hate on-call shifts, but if they must exist, I like the way my team handles them. We have split day and night shifts. 7-18 day shift, and 18-07 night shift. All non-work hours compensated with standby at 10% of hourly pay. Any pages outside of work hours earn you an additional 150% in base pay. Each page guarantees a minimum of 3 hours of pay even if you spent only 5 mins on it.

And since in my country, you must gave at least 11 hours between shifts, if you get paged at night, you get PTO for the next 11 hours on top.

I saw the email with stating that the SD Card expansion slot was in stock and jumped to the marketplace, credit card in hand to make a purchase.

Unfortunately, the page still says give us your email for a notification. Theres no per-order option for just the expansion slot as of yet.

Please make it happen, that's the last thing really important thing I need with my laptop.

Thank you for this "last laptop I'll ever buy"

What do you mean? I have Kodi running on a Pi4 with HDMI-CEC. It works perfectly. Remember, only one of the ports supports HDMI-CEC by default and you need the correct cable.
Re:The creator economy can't rely on Patreon on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @04:44AM (#39522112)
One in that list is not like the others. Nebula sponsorships are for creators that are already a part of their network trying to move viewers to their platform.

That's not a diss on Nebula. I think, among all the others, nebula is the most likely to be sustainable. It is creator owned and operated and the pricing model model seems like it is able to make decent money for the people on it.

No affiliation to Nebula, just a happy, paying customer.

Re:Ask HN: Current Best Practice for Securing Windows? on Friday February 23, 2024 @10:52PM (#39488987)
Partly a joke, but with a grain of good advice. However, it doesn't really work. I live in a different country, and hence am not available for in-person troubleshooting when something goes wrong. I'm really looking for a set up and forget option.

Just something like, have Windows Defender set up, make these sensible changes and for the most part it'll be fine.

To be clear, I don't need to protect them from standard call center scams, egregious phishing attempts or so. They seem to be good enough at identifying those very obvious ones.

Re:Ask HN: Current Best Practice for Securing Windows? on Friday February 23, 2024 @10:47PM (#39488970)
Unfortunately, yes. Despite (or maybe because) my best efforts to get them to use anything else, they're staunchly set on Windows.

I've already taken a massive hearing for trying to get them to use LibreOffice. Windows and MS Office is absolutely non negotiable.

Ask HN: Current Best Practice for Securing Windows?

I'm setting up a new machine with Windows on it for a family member. Since I've personally not used Windows in over a decade, I'm a little disconnected from its current best practices.I remember setting up an antivirus back in those days. The recent article on Avast let me know that AV software is apparently not a popular thing anymore. So what should I be doing? This machine is for the...

No questions. But I just want to say congrats on getting another SKU out. I'm a very happy customer of an AMD FW13. The product has been pretty excellent and I absolutely love owning a notebook that I feel like I really "own".
I agree there. The Jellyfin integration here is the absolute killer feature. I hope to see the first documentation on how to set it up soon.
Looks amazing and I'm keen to try it out. However, I cannot find the sources or set up instructions anywhere on the linked page. Please add at least a link to the github repository to the page so people that stumble upon it can find their way

Do you have the sources for this application available somewhere? I was considering writing something similar just this week. So an already available application where I just point it to the right instance would be amazing
Re:Real-time Ubuntu is now generally available on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @12:28PM (#34807355)
PREEMPT_RT is still a out of tree patch for the kernel. There has been significant progress in mainlining it and for the last few years I've been hearing that its on its last legs of full mainlining.

However, I think its still a little while away from being fully mainlined. The last I remember were issues with preemption in printk calls. Adding this level of preemption support to every subsystem is extremely difficult. Though, I must say that the patched kernels function pretty well. If you need proper real-time, ditch GNU/Linux and go with a real real-time kernel like QNX, VxWorks, etc. Linux will never be true real-time and that's an acknowkedged fact

Re:Ask HN: How do you keep track of your medical history? on Friday January 20, 2023 @02:46AM (#34450225)
Paper. As another poster here mentioned, in case of emergencies paper is the only reliable medium. I have two files of medical records that are chronologically ordered. When I need to go to a new doctor, I just pick up the relevant file and go; hand it over to them and let them scan whatever history they want into their system.

For ease of finding records personally, I have also scanned all of those documents and stored them in a self hosted instance of paperless-ngx along with a standard 1-2-3 backup strategy. In case something happens to the physical file, I should be able to recover the information pretty quickly

I've been doing the same over a similar time span. 5 years for me. However, i am yet to find any leaks.

I get a ton of spam, but they ALL are sent to my publicly listed email address in my git commits. I'm seriously considering turning that email into a honey pot.

Re:Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses? on Monday December 12, 2022 @03:45AM (#33952398)
There are browser extensions that help with this. I use a adlist for ublock-origin that uses the cosmetic filters to remove some offending sites from search results. For me this includes Wikipedia and StackOverflow clones, Quora and a few others
Re:Drawbacks of P2P and a defense of Signal on Sunday January 31, 2021 @04:01AM (#25977288)
I have been running a Synapse instance for nearly 3 years now. My instance is not for open registration but just for family and friends, currently it has around 7 users on it and federates with the rest of the Matrix ecosystem. I also have some experience writing apps that use the Matrix APIs.

The federation API on matrix is a little too chatty for my taste. But that in itself causes no problems. The problems start when a user on your homeserver joins a massive room on any other homeserver. Most commonly these are the bug rooms on matrix.org. Once someone joins one such room, synapse will start slowing down and taking tons of RAM. This has significantly improved in the last year, by huge leaps and bounds. It however does remain a memory hungry process.

VoIP / video on the other hand has been a success story for me. 1:1 calls run smoothly after installing a TURN server. Me and my users use the calling functionality multiple tines a day and don't seem to have any problems with it.

Ask HN: Tips for Linux User on Windows?

I have been a full time Linux user for over 10 years now, at home and professionally. For a new job, I will now be using Windows to develop software.Do you people have any tips for a long time Linux user to feel comfortable / at home using Windows? Some things important to me are: 1. Shell: I believe the WSL can help me here. 2. Keyboard centric life 3. Tiling Window management: I use bspwm and...

Veritasium is a great channel for such content. He has a degree in online pedagogy, IIRC. So he's particularly good at teaching complex concepts through such a medium. Having a degree in physics helps him too.

I can't find anything by the way about Embedded Software Engineers in Germany on your careers page. Are you looking for IoT / Embedded developers in your Munich branch?
