Apparently it's most likely tied to the German municipality of Waake or the Swedish tribe of Vagoths. However most Lithuanians would likely explain it in the form of a joke - either about Germans being thieves ('vogti' = to steal) in reference to Teutonic/Livonic ordins, or about them being 'tough' or well armored ('vo kiets' ~= 'wow, tough/hard').

Not the OP, but I have 7yo and 3yo kids and don't have a license. For as long as we lived in Europe (UK, Belgium and Czech Republic) I felt little need for it - bikes + child trailer served us well most of the time, and we took trains for longer journeys. Now that we moved to New Zealand I'm working on getting a license because while public transport is passable (but far from great) in Auckland, you really do need a car to get the most out of the rest of this beautiful country.

Ask HN: How would you make an on-site application highly available?

We have a well established product in the form of a standalone app that clients run in their environments. Technically it's a dropwizard app with H2 for persistence (our aim was to make it simple to manage). We now have clients asking to make it highly available. That will have to work in varied environments, with storage likely being in aws/gcc/azure. We have a fair amount of work cut out for...

Software Developer/Salesforce consultant | Leeds, UK | Full time, permanent, mostly on-site

A young, 30-ish-strong consultancy in central Leeds. Strong focus on Salesforce work, but we also have MS Dynamix, Data/BI and AWS practices, so you'll have some variety. Salesforce experience not required. We're also looking for data analysts.

Hi all, this is admittedly very broad and open-ended question, but I'd like to hear your opinions or related experiences.I joined this company about a half a year ago. It's about 10 years old and has < 100 employees. About 10 of those are developers. The level of technical skill varies, but is low overall. The most tenured dev has been here for <3 years, majority for less than a year. Most...

Yes, well, this is part of research :-) I agree that staying for a while would be ideal, but it's very nearly impossible at this point.

Thanks for the comment. Perhaps a tad negative, but useful when pondering a move based on nothing more than 'vision that was planted in my head'.

That was the cunning plan :-)

Ask HN: living and working in US

Hi everyone,I wanted to ask for your comments. I'll try to keep this as short as I can.I'm a 26yo enterprise Java dev and the sole provider for my little family (wife and toddler). We're EU citizens. We spent the last 8 years in UK, and have recently moved to Belgium looking for a change. And change we got, but not the good kind. So want to move again. My wife keeps saying we should move to US,...
