Re:Ask HN: What do people say the most? on Sunday November 15, 2015 @04:17PM (#10571252)
The promo video published by Google mentions people translate 100 billion words everyday with Google Translate.

According to the video[1] the most translated words in the world are

"Thank you", "How are you" and "I love you"

Re:How does (free) internet benefit Africa? on Friday October 16, 2015 @03:49PM (#10401612)
I get the information benefits, but beyond that?

>> Having access to information benefits individuals and society as a whole. I'd rather focus on how to utilize this access to internet and create things which are valuable for others to consume locally or globally.

How does a poor person in a rural area REALLY improve their life by just having a cheap android phone and access to the internet?

>> Internet connects people. Almost everything that you do in person can be done via internet. Rather than only being a clueless consumer of the internet, people can learn skills that matter to them. This age is of Knowledge and skills that can create things, solve problems. Sell things on internet. Write book and tell the world. Develop softwares for yourself and others. Earn a living. Help people.

If you can identify you're writing insecure code or building insecure apps you are just being lazy to do it proper way. Web security IMO isn't about learning a new thing, these are concepts that are part of the development flow.

Re:Why WhatsApp Only Needs 50 Engineers for Its 900M Users on Wednesday September 16, 2015 @01:42PM (#10228403)
I have been looking for full time openings at the moment and I prefer this kind of hiring practice but it's been rare.

For startups where technology is not the only infrastructure of the platform your observation is likely not true.

Look at startups like Cloudfactory: http://www.cloudfactory.com/home (they are actually on a mission to create jobs for millions)

Can someone tell what is wrong with this observation and why the downvotes ?
Re:Fixing Twitter on Monday September 07, 2015 @01:41AM (#10180213)
But the post won't discuss about financials. It went on bashing twitter as if it at its current state is pretty much screwed up which I disagree because I am quite active on the platform and find it cool.

-> Twitter feels too much like a one-way broadcast system. It needs to feel more like a community, with meaningful two-way interaction.

I totally disagree. If you follow a avalanche of people and brands your timeline gets useless within an hour. Twitter is place to build a community that you want to be in and participate if you want to get max out of it. If one expects it to be a community he/she shall participate. Why would I expect Paul Graham to be replying me on Twitter for nothing (just because I follow him and mentioned him some non of his business comment) ?

Twitter like Trello is a tool, a mainstream tool got to be horizontal product [1].

There is no point discussing about it should be this or that. Feel free to use it the way you want it to be.

I launched a turn taking two player real-time board game in HN 4 years ago, with zero returns so far. It took 3 months to build the web app, another 3 months for android app. But, lots of PR for the stunt. It is still up. 30K game instances so far and 3K players.

Recently I am having thoughts like should I relaunch this ? But won't want to do it without someone to look it as a business. This game feels like Chess but it is quick to learn, setup and finish.

Re:Ask HN: As a founder how does your weekends look like? on Saturday August 29, 2015 @12:04AM (#10139015)
Emails are very tempting. I am on the same boat but, I have been working with a remote team and usually happen to work a lot during weekends because of timezone issues. Working with 5 year old company (remote), bootstraped and I recently moved to Bay Area. Was wondering how it goes with other founders here. Thanks for writing.
Going for people and culture ?

Pick different culture. Stay in one country/city, exploring it to the fullest, making friends. Learning to sign their songs.

Going for refreshment and nature ?

Hop in multiple places.

Question isn't clear about what aspect of tech you are interested in.

Still, i'd suggest to familiarize yourself with the underlying process of how startups/products are built. For eg. here's the Lean process: http://theleanstartup.com/principles

Find out where you can contribute and collaborate on the process or better if you have managerial skills go execute the process.

For a tech product there is more to writing code. It's like if you have a blueprint of house engineers will build the house for you.

Learn to draft, pitch and execute that blueprint for your tech interest.
