Thanks for the feedback! The TikTok style recommendation system is more of an analogy to explain how the recommendation engine will show you content that you actually want to see. Medium, for example, hasn't done a great job at this. It's true that AI writing can encourage people to churn out low quality articles, would have to think harder on that one.

It would the second option. Can you share why you wouldn't want it?

Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely still considering if to go through the ad revenue route (see my reply to another comment). I hate ads like everyone else but I've come to understand that businesses that use ads as their revenue model need it to survive. However, perhaps going the subscription route could also work out, still figuring out the costs.

I was thinking of having a freemium model. The AI assistance will be only available for up to 3 posts and then after that writers need to pay X amount of $ per month. This would also include the removal of ads for these who pay the monthly plans.

I chose to go the ad revenue route because of profitability. At the end of the day, businesses need money, and ad revenue can help us in the long-run with all the costs.

Sounds cool!

People are on their phones more than any other device. I want the person to be able to read from their phone and having an app would be a more pleasant experience for the user.

However, I do think it is wiser to start off with a website first. So yes, it'll be a website first, and then transition into also being an app.

Medium yes, but I think Substack is doing pretty well? There's definitely room for improvement, so what do you think needs to improve?

Making Blogs Popular Again

Wanting to tell you guys about the app I'm currently building! For context: I'm someone that enjoys reading blogs, even more than watching TikTok videos, or YouTube videos. I write for fun on Medium, and on Substack. The problem I'm trying to solve is the decreased popularity of blogs from readers, and writers, especially in younger generations.I'm building a platform that has the social...

That would be the plan, yes. In the beginning we would focus on using funding to compensate the writers until we start to gain network effects in which then we should be receiving ad money which would be shared with the writers.

Can you further explain what you mean by dark patterns? And yes, TikTok is excellent at giving you the content you want to see, which is why I think having an algorithm that is somewhat remotely close to TikTok's algo will make a greater experience for those that prefer to read long-form text content.

What other issues do you have?

Re:Medium.com Competitor on Sunday November 27, 2022 @09:39PM (#33769253)
By giving writers an incentive to write quality content.

Youtube pays their creators well, although I know that video is more engaging than text. Nevertheless, giving writers the chance to make good money on a platform will make them post quality content, and would make them continue to post quality content so that they get compensated. I'm a medium writer, and I don't get paid nearly enough what I should for the amount of work I put into my articles.

Medium doesn't have a great recommendation system. Tiktok does. The beauty of the tiktok algorithm is that it gives users what they want without them having to go through the trouble of finding what they want. On medium, you have to go to the topic and then from there see what you can find. On my platform, there will be a "For You" page that makes the content go to you.

Medium.com Competitor

I have been using Medium for a while now and despite there being some quality posts (every now and then), the majority of the platform recommends you shitty articles. Not to mention that most of them are paywall gated.I'm creating a Medium competitor website that would be free for everyone, and that would compensate writers through a split of ad revenue. The major differentiator is that it...

Re:Social Network but Only for Articles on Monday August 15, 2022 @11:36AM (#32471037)
I found this post on Reddit that I think would be a cool idea. It'd be like instagram I think where you have a feed but instead of posting photos or videos, you upload articles that you've been reading and that you want to share with your audience.

So for example, someone like Paul Graham posting articles he found interesting to his followers. I feel like that would be cool and it would give a refreshing vibe from all the visual stuff happening. What do you think?
