Re:Another Corner of the Internet Has Been Ruined on Friday August 14, 2026 @10:58AM (#49299593)
This is what everyone says until hardship befalls them and they are forced to see reality in every facet. After which they have a drastic change of heart. I think adults all go through this at some point.

For about 3 or 4 decades I felt this way. I have found many of us "futurists" to just be exceedingly naive in that we do not see the whole picture; rather--we cherry-pick what we think the world is (or should be) and impose that view onto everyone.

Then we meet someone who does see the whole picture and feel attacked. Even more so if what they are saying sounds perfectly sound in logic.

The thing that people hate most is being told things that make sense that force them to abandon their way of thinking.

The go-to is to find other naive people who think the same thing and form a negative consensus to combat what we already knew as true. Strength in numbers. If 90% of the people said the sky is green, it would be green no question about it.

If the current events of the world don't prove that, I don't know what does.

They wont stop it. They will just slow down a bit if people get ruffled. That's how alphabet has handled everything else. They learned that if they can make changes slowly enough, they can do whatever the hell they want to.

As we all know we can even pay 10x more for items and get next to no raise in our wages, but because it was done slowly in an "official" and "professional" manner, most folks didn't even complain, they just screamed into the giant pillow we call "the internet".

Corporations of the 2020s love the internet's digital pillow and its magical crowd-quieting capabilities. If only the ancient roman empire had invented the internet they would be ruling the entire planet by now and we could watch gladiators on youtube :P provided we don't stand out too much (then we would be said gladiators)

Bloat in software is getting WAAAY out of hand

I saw a Sudoku game the other day-SUDOKU you know a few numbers-that took 40 seconds to load, and then caused the phone to overheat while in play, while splashing ads here and there. Its sad. That was the very definition to me of "giving into bloat". Nobody cares about efficiency anymore, and in fact are going in the opposite direction. Substituting bloat for actual programming knowledge, many...

Companies doing QC on boards should be held accountable for not soldiering

I just don't get it. I keep seeing product after product that I have to repair, the manufacturer supplies those points for soldering and YET the assemblers don't solder it, it breaks. If its an internal part MAYBE, but many of these are USB and HDMI ports. Also, why the heck are so many chargers missing half of the safety circuit? Does QC really ok this stuff, if so quality really has gone...

HDMI on Gaming Consoles

You would think with gaming consoles costing SO MUCH you would at least get an HDMI port that can take a reasonable amount of impact, yet 1 cable gets tugged a little and broken it is. As you know, you need a very very small percision tip, soldering paste, microscopic vision and a thermostat controlled iron to + preferring a heat gun to help it melt without damaging other nearby parts. When I...

I personally don't take ANYTHING I read on ANY webpage, and that includes (anyname)wiki(anyname).(domain) websites. Wikipedia you may have been around and that's great that you have for reference and such. As far as actual human history goes though, I'd take all of it with a giant piece of rocksalt.

Why? Because regardless of what anyone says, nothing on the internet can be truly unbiased AND not offsensive to (someone, somewhere).

You would have to offend a whole lot of people to do that, and as we've seen that never lasts long before being blasted clean off the face of the planet.

Sure the more general topics that everyone accepts may be mostly correct (we can agree the sky is blue). But when you get down to things that are sensitive (about what people ABC that did XYZ back in 123 did, thought, are, etc) it becomes touchy, and often gives rise to flamewars which as we know are all but snuffed out.

The death of the top-level flamewar has proven that people can't handle the truth. Flame wars (were) the evidence that actual humans were expressing their opinions on beliefs to one another in a very free manner---but wait... we can NOT have that!!! oh no!!!! lets see what should we do then... oh i know... so... git rid of it! (*muffled, mostly inaudible struggling heard from the background noise*) Ah there!! that's better, nice politically correct encyclopedias for all! Oh sure!! they're correct, `cause we said they are, That's why! We can't be lying if we've been on the internet all this time!!! And especially those of us who have a stock ticker--we are the most correct cause our money says so!! right?!!
