Re:Coding Stories: Me vs. the VNC Guy on Saturday January 25, 2020 @01:40PM (#22147801)
When I was a junior in high school and computer lab monitor, I made a suggestion that we install VNC on every computer and it was green lit by the administration. We used an app that could view thumbnails of all screens at the same time. I only enforced the "no porn" rule. Kids could play games, browse the web and I accepted fake hall passes. But if they were watching porn they would be thrown out and banned.
Too bad you'll be missing a lot of the game experience this way, like the roar of the crowd and the banging of trashcans.
It should announce its presence on an interval too. What if someone camoflages the camera in some Christmas lights? What if you're blind?

>attempt a retrieval via brute force (hired guard etc)

This can be a very bad idea, especially if the seller isn't a thief but someone who unknowingly purchased the stolen property.

Sounds like a single point of failure if the pilots rely on ATC too much. Low visibility landings and such.
You're assuming it would broadcast long enough to find the station, not a hit and run operation. And even if there was a constant signal, they could be using a repeater.

California real estate agents minimize erosion, earthquakes, fires, zombies and so on...
Analog AM/FM should be the next to go.

Just use the drive-through and you'll skip everyone.
Re:Mark Zuckerberg testifies before Congress on Tuesday April 10, 2018 @10:23PM (#16807546)
His line of questioning was designed to expose discrepancies in stated policies versus actual implementation, with the goal of eroding trust of Facebook in that half of electorate. Eroding trust was the whole point that the hearing was called, and in that regard Cruz probably had the best questions. His questions were met with denials rather than "I'll get back to you on that".
Jim Florentine's podcast has pretty good commentary on cringey social media posting trends.
The so-called "cybersecurity experts" main task in the FBI is probably running forensics on narcotics traffickers' devices and data. Using illegal drugs would be a conflict of interest.
>a density of talent and capital unrivaled in the world

The Four Asian Tigers have already surpassed SV on that. There's obviously a government-related cultural gap that won't win them any popularity contests.

Ask other people on disability how they got on it.
Re:Ask HN: Which stack do you use at your startup? on Friday February 16, 2018 @10:44AM (#16393090)
Stackshare is more informative than a majority of the replies in this thread that aren't stating their startup's name or use case.

The government can ban imports and robotics.

Kubuntu 17.10 because I wanted per-folder views in Dolphin. The 16.04 backports repo hasn't had an update for ages.

So Twitter, which sources of news have integrity?

Re:Google and Facebook Have Failed Us on Tuesday October 03, 2017 @10:22AM (#15392577)
Speculation on motive begins immediately when we learn what the target was and the weapons that were used. You can't censor that without censoring the entire incident.
It's not "forward thinking" to put that feature in 4 years after Touch ID debuted and people have already been forced to unlock their phones. They should be issuing warnings that fingerprint sensors are for convenience and reduce security unless they're used in multi-factor authentication.

Here's one such testimony from Aaron Hernandez's murder trial, where his cell phone pinged a tower near the scene of the crime:

Re:Linux 4.12 Released on Monday July 03, 2017 @08:27PM (#14692564)
This lacks linux-tools and thus breaks cpu frequency and cpu governor management tools (cpupower, TLP, etc).

For reasons unknown Fedora's RawhideKernelNodebug repo includes that package but Ubuntu's doesn't :)
