"...workers at KK Park are subjected to 17-hour workdays and are frequently spied on, tortured, and threatened with murder when attempting to flee the compound.[11][17] Passports and cell phones of workers were confiscated to prevent unmonitored communication with the outside world. The complex includes supermarkets, hospital, restaurants and hotels to form a closed community.[citation needed] Illegal organ harvesting was also reported to take place inside KK Park.[4] KK Park victims could only leave by paying a "contract termination" fee which is calculated by the inflated cost of transportation and how much money the victims earned for the scam companies."

Letting the LLM explain it more clearly than I can:

What exactly changed according to the FRED definition? Before May 2020: M2 included: M1 (currency in circulation + checking accounts + other transaction accounts) Savings deposits (including money market deposit accounts, MMDAs) Small-denomination time deposits (under $100,000, excluding IRA and Keogh balances) Retail money market mutual fund balances (excluding IRA and Keogh balances) Thus, M2 = M1 + Savings deposits (including MMDAs) + Small time deposits + Retail MMFs.

After May 2020: M1 was expanded to include savings deposits and money market deposit accounts (previously, savings and MMDAs were NOT part of M1; they were only part of M2). Since savings and MMDAs moved into M1, the definition of M2 no longer needs to separately add these categories—they are already captured within M1. Thus, after May 2020, the Fed simplified the definition to:

M2 = (New) M1 + Small-denomination time deposits + Retail MMFs

But importantly, note the following:

M1 itself was significantly expanded (now including savings and money market deposits), causing M1 to spike substantially overnight.

M2 overall did NOT lose or gain any category. It still includes all the exact same accounts and balances. It simply shifted the categorization of savings deposits and MMDAs into M1, so these no longer need separate listing when describing M2.

FUD / Citation required. Quick google search reveals you are incorrect (components of M2 shifted, and portions moved between M1 and M2, but M1 is a subset of M2, so there is no significant change to total M2 supply before and after).

Also Federal Reserve is not part of the US Government.

This seems counterintuitive as I would expect this to reinforce the bad habit. No citation or explanation given. Any ideas?

Re:Financial Market Applications of LLMs on Sunday April 21, 2024 @11:33AM (#40106556)
A coworker presented a demo the other day of this - asking LLM (I think it was OpenAI) to extract the text from a PDF - each page of the PDF passed as an image. It was able to take a table and turn it into a hierarchical representation of the data (ie. Column with bullets under it for each row, then next column, etc.)

If you haven't tried maybe worth a shot

I think a clinical psych person may label this as depersonalization/derealization.

But I like how the parent called it "a slow integration of diverse parallel processes" - not labeling the experience as some kind of problem.

The article links to an amazon search results page for "bathroom spy camera"

Here is the first result: "1080P Bathroom spy Shower Nozzle Hidden Spy Security Cameras Mini Camera DVR 32GB,Mini Nanny Cam Smart Home, Indoor Outdoor Baby Camera"

https://www.amazon.com/Bathroom-Shower-Security-Cameras-Outd...

Kind of incredible that this still continues. They at least give some kind of cover for the use case of a "baby camera" but honestly even that feels so flimsy. This is disturbing.

For those in the Bay Area - Kirk Lombard author of The Sea Forager's Guide to the Northern California Coast (at least used to) do some guided tours harvesting flora and fauna of the Norcal coast. Enjoyable and informative. Here's the book

Re:Ask HN: How could I safely contact drug cartels? on Saturday July 15, 2023 @10:45AM (#36737254)
Your behavior right now is much higher risk to your daughter’s safety than fentanyl-laced drugs.
Thanks for the tip! Also, saw that the article also mentions this book in its first paragraph, so sounds worth a read.

That's what I thought of too. Just finishing reading Sorcerer's Apprentice - a kind of slog of a read written by one of the insiders of the Castaneda cult. I wonder if he "borrowed" the name...
Interesting aside speaking of lucid dreaming- at least one of the authors of this paper is a lucid dream researcher - Karen Konkoly at Northwestern. Another people she coauthored studies conversing with lucid dreamers while they're mid-dreaming. Interesting stuff.
In my experience using Django for my webapps hasn't meant I can avoid HTML and javascript. Writing templates is writing HTML, and any relatively fancy UI including charting etc. requires using javascript
Mega impressed, I can see myself using this regularly. Charting and viz with matplotlib and pandas transforms is great, but a lot of time there’s a benefit of dumping to point-and-click mode with tableau to quickly spin data around without much coding. This will make that workflow much smoother
Re:The Spaceballs Argument for Unconditional Basic Income on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @03:20PM (#34344067)
There's a huge diversity of social arrangements throughout history. Some of them communal and sharing, some warlike and taking; forced labor and not; monetary systems and not; etc. The quote you reply to is overly nostalgic and too simplistic to reflect realities of history, same with your comment.
Re:Does the Past Still Exist? on Sunday July 24, 2022 @03:19AM (#32211156)
This sounds very interesting, thank you for sharing. Could you recommend any resources to learn about these three regions, ideally for someone without formal physics training?
I recall a former cult member turned therapist and cult expert Steve Hassan mentioning TM as problematic, he is the first reviewer quoted by this book about the topic

I think the discourse you started here becomes even more interesting and defensible if your assertion goes from “God isn’t real” to “God is human created.” It makes the idea of rights clearer as some kind of higher order, purer version of law
Re:Ask HN: How do I stop being used? on Thursday June 09, 2022 @12:58PM (#31683708)
It sounds like you’re saying: all I need to do is stop, but I can’t! Meaning you are in your own way.

If you have positive cash flow right now I’d recommend finding a therapist, since personality changes like this can take some deep digging. Personally I have found experiential therapy useful, things like EMDR, process work, gestalt, or even jungian dream analysis. Many on HN speak positively about cognitive therapy like CBT. You will need to spend a little time exploring and may not find the right fit with your first therapist. Good luck!

At this point it seems like Psymposia’s MO is that MAPS is the scandal, and is generating bad science. Not sure I 100% agree but I think it’s a point worth considering.
We’re at the point in the cycle where dollars donated to Psymposia will get better ROI than dollars to MAPS. Psychedelics aren’t going away at this point. Powerful tools must be handled with care, lest they cause more harm than good.

Re:Preventing Burnout: A Manager's Toolkit on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @01:12PM (#31250779)
Seems silly though. The term "growth company" seems a lot more authentic. Of course these labels are not black/white, but it's a useful distinction. There are simply different dynamics at a growth company vs. a startup.

This is super cool.

In case you don't make it through to the project's webpage howisfelix.today, and read through to the end, here is the creator's conclusion:

Overall, having spent a significant amount of time building this project, scaling it up to the size it’s at now, as well as analysing the data, the main conclusion is that it is not worth building your own solution, and investing this much time. When I first started building this project 3 years ago, I expected to learn way more surprising and interesting facts. There were some, and it’s super interesting to look through those graphs, however retrospectively, it did not justify the hundreds of hours I invested in this project.

I’ll likely continue tracking my mood, as well as a few other key metrics, however will significantly reduce the amount of time I invest in it.
