scorcher

My view is that its hard to form a generalised opinion on a entire sector. Especially when that sector is in a country with 1.3 billion people.
Re:WannaCry ransomware bitcoins move from online wallets on Thursday August 03, 2017 @09:03AM (#14919145)
Mixers actually make it impossible to trace. What typically happens is you deposit an amount. Some amount similar to that minus a fee is then sent to the address or addresses of your choice in multiple small transactions over a period of time from seemingly unconnected addresses. It completely breaks the tractability of the history.
Thats where property based tests come in very useful
Re:Test if a URL uses Node.js on Monday April 07, 2014 @11:16AM (#7546943)
Yeh, just looks at the header; node activity detected Found x-powered-by: Express header in response
This graph is pointless, revenue is not the same as profit. Sure total revenue has stayed the same but that tells you nothing about profit.

One the the major increases in revenue is concerts. They are expensive and often operated at a loss to promote physical media sales

Re:Don't Comment Your Code - Write Better Code on Monday August 12, 2013 @10:21AM (#6199316)
Its true one should FAVOUR self documenting code. Going to the absolute and never commenting your code is obviously stupid, there will always be cases when more context and information on "Why" is needed.
Re:Creative People Say No on Friday June 21, 2013 @08:59AM (#5917799)
For a start there is no guts to the article. It could be summarised in one line, "Time is valuable, make your default position no"
Re:IT departments won't exist in five years on Wednesday June 05, 2013 @10:40AM (#5825860)
Daft. Even if any company could just get its workers to manage their own IT needs it doesn't mean its cost efficient. The average hourly wage of IT support is often going to be less than the people they are supporting (i.e. programmers managers). They are also a hell of a lot faster at doing things since they do it every day
Re:Ask HN: and now what? on Friday May 24, 2013 @11:43AM (#5763526)
Firstly it seems like its time to take a break. When you disillusioned you need to stop for a bit. Perhaps do a while of "normal" work.

Secondly I would advise a frank and in depth post mortem. Find out really what when wrong and when. Perhaps it was just bad luck but more likely there are mistakes you can learn from.

"Each partners I meet seems too newbie to work with." This phrase stands out. Perhaps its just because your upset right now but generally when someone blames everyone else it means the problem lies with them.

If I saw a big metal thing attached to the front of an ATM I would run a mile. The turning mechanism really needs to be inside the ATM.
I only partially agree. For things like hangout gmail android and reader giving support would cost so much they couldn't continue to roll out new products (given that they would have to support them).

However where significant money is concerned I agree they should have real support. Only offering support for some products could get really confusing for users unfortunately.

Re:The Scientific 7-Minute Workout on Tuesday May 14, 2013 @11:35AM (#5705573)
Just because burning calories from exercise will never replace proper diet doesn't mean its worthless. You can easily double your weight loss rate by going to the gym a few times a week. Far from worthless in my books.
Re:Why Sleep Deprivation Eases Depression on Friday April 26, 2013 @09:50AM (#5612869)
I would go for a Jawbone Up if your using it mainly for sleep tracking. The sleep tracking on a fitbit is a bit of a hassle since you have to get it out and put it in its own separate arm band.
Re:Consumer key/secret for official Twitter clients on Thursday March 07, 2013 @06:41AM (#5337155)
You could only make an app that would explode if/when they decide to change keys
Re:Your Kindle got stolen? Don't count on Amazon's help on Friday February 08, 2013 @06:44AM (#5187344)
I'm not sure Amazon can give away your personal information without a court order. I think it breaks their terms and conditions and could get them in legal trouble. Unfortunate but really not Amazon's fault.
Re:Employees leave managers, not companies on Wednesday February 06, 2013 @10:09AM (#5176701)
Perhaps its unusual but every company I have worked for this could be sorted out with a quiet word with upper management or HR. A little disruption moving people between teams is well worth averting a potential clashes
Re:Stack Overflow User Survey Results on Friday January 25, 2013 @12:18PM (#5116496)
I really don't think 2.2% increase in happiness during two studies is statistically significant. Especially given the user base increased by over 300% in that time so presumably the demographic will have changed. Still, clever use of information to promote their site. Its amazing how fast stack exchange has grown.
Ahh. Could be me just being dumb but you might want to clarify that on the site. "you both can take it from there." is a bit ambiguous.
This seems to be pitched somewhere horrible between the fun side projects ideas site and contract work. Take out the $50 charge and it suddenly looks great

$50 isn't very much for a days work. Also if I'm doing contract work it would be nice to pitch the price to the project and my skills rather than having some arbitrary fixed price. If I have taken someone's money they will feel entitled and I have to deal with difficult clients vague requirements and suchlike. They will also (presumably) retain the rites for the code produced.

Remove the $50 and it can be just for fun. I can bail on people I don't want to work with and I can retain the code if I want to extend it or show it off on my GitHub.

Me too (signing in with github)
Re:3UK treats political satire as porn and blocks it on Thursday January 17, 2013 @08:21AM (#5072427)
I had some trouble getting adult content on my phone on GiffGaff. Their webpage fell over took several weeks and three support tickets to get it fixed.

To their credit though when I made a formal complaint about the issue it got fixed within minutes. Plus its very cheap so I can put up with a little crap support (had much worse from other companies I paid a lot more for)

Re:Bitcoin exchange hacked via Rails exploit, funds stolen on Friday January 11, 2013 @12:10PM (#5043616)
Perhaps I'm being nieve but it seems like very bad coding when front end exploits can lead to cash being stolen. I would expect the bare minimum of a message bus or some other separation between back end payment components and the public facing boxes.

Re:Do Web Developers Ever Learn? on Monday September 24, 2012 @11:24AM (#4565096)
Completely agree with you on the bad flash and links point. Not sure I agree with you on the webapps points though. Would have been nice to have some depth on why you feel PushState is a "bandaid" rather than a full solution.

You also seem to have not taken into account how new HTML5 is. Sure generally a semantic solution exists now but when the vast majority of sites were written this wasn't the case.

Re:New C# to Javascript compiler released on Monday September 03, 2012 @09:19AM (#4470243)
I don't really get this. Surely JavaScript and C# are so hugely different that any converted code would be horrific? Wouldn't it be simpler to just write JavaScript in JavaScript?
I'm not surprised. I got the expiry date of my credit card wrong. It stores it and will not let you change overwrite or delete it. In the end I just had to top up offline till I could move carrier.
