Re:Show HN: Pep – Turn Your Website into a Progressive Web App on Thursday February 27, 2020 @01:37PM (#22436252)
Mind to explain how it works? At least on the mobile website there is no way to find out...

Ask HN: How to hire digital nomads nearby?

Here's a real problem that no one seems to have solved yet: In my company, we would need temporary help with a certain technology for a few months.Freelancers in my city are fully booked. Yet I don't want to hire somebody remote because the job requires people to work closely together in the same room on a regular basis.I know there's a ton of "digital nomads" out there, travelling through...

Re:LeadGeni.us: User acquisition as a service on Thursday October 03, 2013 @03:26PM (#6491301)
I am wondering about your economics. Back of the envelope: 800 usd per month (min 80 hrs of work) translates into max 10 USD hourly revenue. Does not sound like much for "expert knowledge".

I suppose there are different approaches: are you using amazon mechanical Turk (there was a recent HN post on it a few days ago)? Or are you planning to use massive scale effects (as in: build up a contact database that you can reuse)?

Could you elaborate on that?

Re:LeadGeni.us: User acquisition as a service on Thursday October 03, 2013 @02:58PM (#6491124)
Like the idea, generally, but two questions:

1) For our company to make a decision it would be really important to roughly know the costs per lead upfront. Have you considered this kind of pricing and if yes: why did you decide against it?

2) do you have any special areas of expertise? A car dealer has different requirements than a biotech startup, so how do you cope with that?

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2013) on Friday March 01, 2013 @01:22PM (#5305948)

- PHP/MySQL dev. 1-2 days regular per week. Admin and continuous improvement of one existing portal application (one of Germany's biggest nightlife communities, highly scaled deployment)

BOTH positions can be remote, but we have a beautiful office in downtown which can be used (free of charge). Will help with relocation. Email philipp.rappold at gmail .com

Re:Poll: HN Meetup in Munich, Germany on Friday March 02, 2012 @10:44AM (#3656937)
Would definitely be in, let's keep the event dead simple: No long date + time discussions, just pick a date ~2 weeks from today (weekday!) and choose a nice location, where we can make a reservation. Maybe something in the "Uni-Viertel"?

Ask HN: Any commercially successful Arduino projects?

Hey! I have just ordered my first Arduino and am totally thrilled to start experimenting soon!Looking around on the interwebs, I couldn't find any commercial (successful) projects based on this platform. Could anyone point me in the right direction or do you share my observation?

Re:Text message blows up suicide bomber by accident on Thursday January 27, 2011 @08:10AM (#2147647)
Why should she use a text-message for a belt bomb? Wouldn't a simple switch be sufficient?

I don't think this is a credible source.

Re:Webdis: HTTP + JSON API for Redis on Monday January 24, 2011 @02:39PM (#2136421)
Memcache, for example, is explicitly not meant to be run with "public access", as it is not secured against attacks. I am pretty sure the same applies to redis.

If my assumption is correct, i wonder why one should use a (potentially slower) http client or protocol in favor of the "native" protocol.

Re:Amazon Releases Elastic Beanstalk!... What? on Wednesday January 19, 2011 @03:40AM (#2119170)
Is it only me to confuse this with beanstalkd (opensource queuing service) in the first place?
tl,dr; a forced software upgrade kept crashing all skype windows clients, taking down supernodes as well.
Re:Hacker News Munich Meetup on Sunday December 05, 2010 @09:52AM (#1971691)
What a great idea - I'd love to join but unfortunately I am busy on the 8th. Would be great to schedule the next meeting a bit more in advance (1-2 weeks) and preferably on Thu-Sun ;)
I highly doubt whether they're using the right econometric models.

In table 2 and 3 they're using an OLS model although the dependent variable is binary ("choosing and aggressive strategy 0/1"). A logit model seems much more appropriate here.

This does not give me much confidence in the results.

Re:How to hide files in JPEG pictures on Sunday March 21, 2010 @11:29AM (#1208070)
First: I wonder if all jpeg viewers accept the "new file", I guess some will choke on the altered files.

Second: If this works it might be possible to distribute hidden files through profile pictures (one facebook and friends) :) I'm glad I never store original jpegs in my web projects, but rather saved processed versions (resized etc).

Re:Still can't decide on a Payment System. Please HELP on Thursday January 07, 2010 @04:59AM (#1036806)
Offtopic: Can I use recurly outside the US? I'd need it for a b2b website and have nothing but a German bank account and credit card. Thanks!
I'm trying hard finding something missing, but I think your points are very good already. I'd also choose this sequence.

Just brainstorming on the things I wish someone had told me before:

(1) Be careful when picking friends as business partners: Having good friends as business partners can be tough, especially when things don't go as expected. I think this is a personal thing, as some people can argue on a business level and still stay friends. Thing is, you have to be sensitized to that fact.

(2) Endurance It takes longer than you plan. Period.

(3) Set quantitative, measurable goals. When I started a project with some friends :) two years ago, we had a great product (e-commerce), but never implemented any "controlling" into our application. Of course, we could track units sold, but the whole idea would have given us much more data points that could be used for analysis and further development - only had the scripts to read them out never been implemented. Use numbers whereever possible to make your decisions.

From my experience, the best way to start planning is to give your lecture its structure first. For a start, I'd divide it into 2 parts:

(1) Internal perspective [The bright idea, people, motivation, skills, legal aspects, gtd]

(2) External perspective [Market analysis, funding, communications]

Additionally, I think the key to success is mixing "theoretical frameworks" with real world examples in each session, to keep people motivated.

Re:Amazon Payments now supports recurring payments on Friday May 29, 2009 @03:11PM (#632607)
Well, there actually there are 3 things that make me mad about PayPal:

(1) Bad process (users have to create accounts/ passwords before they can checkout)

(2) Rejection of some credit card numbers (happened to some of our customers, due to their PayPal's security measures - the cards worked on other sites)

(3) Blocking of merchant accounts (happened to us twice. Only way to resolve the issue was entering my drivers license + id number, which were not accepted - spent several days trying to get it fixed by phone)

You're absolutely right that one could probably avoid issue (1) by choosing their $30 plan and integrating it into our own website. But I am pretty sure (2) and (3) will still apply, which is nothing but horrible if you are a small business.

Another question: Does anyone have an idea why there is no competition in the market so far? I suppose there must be kind of regulatory issues, although they must be even harder in the US where there is competition.

[AND thanks for your code-offer - I think I'll get that done on my own anyways ;) If not, I'd be happy to get back to you ;))]

Re:Amazon Payments now supports recurring payments on Friday May 29, 2009 @10:11AM (#632083)
I should elaborate :)

There is afaik no service, that offers a nice and easy payment integration for small e-commerce websites. Of course you can get all the heavyweight stuff with merchant accounts and so on. But if you're a small garage-shop which wants to accept credit card payments, there is no alternative to paypal (at least in germany).

I think there's no need to mention here how much the payment process of paypal sucks anyways, as it has been discussed here already extensively.

Within my own little company, I've estimated that we loose about 30% of our customers in the last phase of checking out, where people are on behalf of paypals website. As far as i've seen, amazon does a much better job here.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think you dont even have to open an account with pasword and stuff to checkout using ur credit card?

Re:Amazon Payments now supports recurring payments on Friday May 29, 2009 @09:04AM (#631965)
This is great news, but it would be even better if amazon dared to start their service in Europe as well.

So far, there is no "real" competition to paypal for small developer sheds. In fact, I am sooo p about it, that I think I'm going to start a payments service myself! Anyone come and join me?

Re:Profit per employee for some large tech companies on Friday May 15, 2009 @07:39AM (#610378)
Although it's nice to see these numbers, I'm a bit sceptic and think one should not over-interpret them.

Reason: Who says this is a systematical effect due to their organizational strucuture? I know I'm being picky now, but you could also be the leader in this table if you were selling half of your assets in one year.

Re:Econometrics In R on Friday May 08, 2009 @06:10AM (#599429)
I've had mainly 3 reasons to switch to R:

(1) It's free

(2) It has a huge repositoriy of libraries. There's hardly anything that you can't do with R. In my special case it was about hazard-rate models, which are barely implemented in other tools that I tried (namely EViews, SPSS)

(3) It has a BIG community behind it, which you can ask for help once you're stuck. I haven't found this kind of "service" in other software (namely, again, EViews).

Re:"PSD is not my favorite file format" on Thursday April 23, 2009 @09:04AM (#575485)
That's why I said "to some extent". I agree that they did not intentionally plan to f* up their code. But I'm sure they could have been refactoring their spaghetti at some point, but obviously they didn't.
Re:"PSD is not my favorite file format" on Thursday April 23, 2009 @02:22AM (#575204)
I think Adobe made that on purpose to some extent.

The less other programs are able to handle a full-featured psd, the more consumers will likely buy the full version of photoshop (ok, some might be getting it through other sources, but at least most businesses would choose the real Photoshop over other programs).

Consider Open Office: As it handles only 99% of doc-files correctly, I found myself quickly buying the full MS-version, because you can't just manage that hassle in daily business life.

EDIT: I forgot: Great read, anyhow!!!

Re:Digg's New DUI.Stream and MXHR on Wednesday April 22, 2009 @05:25PM (#574585)
Did you figure out how they're transforming the serialized image data into real images? I remember there was something like a data-attribute in the img-tag back in the days, but i thought it was deprecated years ago...?

Any hints?

Is it just me or is there nothing really fancy about this script? Look at the example page of <insert-your-fav-js-framework-here> and you'll be even more surprised...?
Re:Simple data analysis in R on Monday April 13, 2009 @07:14AM (#559653)
Thanks for sharing, R is really a great tool. Using it as well for my PhD thesis because I needed survival/ hazard rate models, which I couldn't find in Eviews, SPSS et al.

And btw: If you need good alternative to R's native plotting, try http://had.co.nz/ggplot/ - it's awesome.

...using SSDs?
Re:Most common passwords list from 3 databases on Monday March 30, 2009 @04:45AM (#538323)
Having a closer look at the list shows that password rules like "alpha + numericals" don't add much of security in real world scenarios: In approx 95% people seem to add one or two digits at the end of a string.
