Re:The Tragedy of Losing Your Wikipedia Page on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:48AM (#50299961)
My dad has the opposite problem: he wants his German Wikipedia page deleted, but he's considered too relevant.

He worked as a film director decades ago and won prestigious awards. Today he works as a janitor, living out of the public eye and largely forgotten by it.

The page is like an echo from the past and includes private information he shared in an interview years ago. Still, he's deemed too relevant for it to be deleted.

Re:Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative? on Thursday September 24, 2026 @01:15PM (#49833779)
I am in awe about how wonderfully engineered by evolution the body is. E.g., what we are able to do with it and how it heals itself when we have an injury. Sure, many people would not live long without external intervention, but many others would. I still want to see the robot that can survive 80 active years without maintenance.
I would not because it’s evil.
Re:Once You Try a Four-Day Workweek, It's Hard to Go Back on Monday October 21, 2024 @04:54PM (#41908429)
I mean, that's definitely going away if all other employers also move to five-day workweeks, so it seems like you shouldn't factor that in as one of the benefits of this schedule.

1920 probably

That’s just a conspiracy theory. You overestimate Germanys power in the EU by far, it is not 2009 anymore.

Also, German car manufacturers will not profit from these tariffs.

VW is against import tariffs on Chinese cars as they fear repercussions (and China is an important export market to them). There are other car manufacturers in the EU which depend much more on domestic sales.
I think it’s important to point out that German car manufacturers and the German government opposed import tariffs on Chinese cars.
Re:A Working Turing Machine Hits Lego Ideas on Tuesday October 08, 2024 @05:29PM (#41782012)
From the Ideas Page:

> The model has 4 (2²) possible symbols and 8 (2³) possible states, so in total 32 possible symbol-state combinations. Each instruction has 7 bits (3 for the state, 2 for the symbol, 1 for moving left/right and 1 for stopping)

And the tape is unlimited of course ;)

Social science is science.
For me it’s the same. The moment I accept that I’ll be super tired the next day is the moment I finally fall asleep.
Re:Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law on Monday March 18, 2024 @09:40AM (#39744364)
Is it just me or does someone else finds it curious that a post with 414 points in 2 hours and many comments is on page 2? There are posts with less points, and less comments in more time that are on the first page. Is the HN ranking algorithm public?
Cool thing!

But: The demo is not usable for me on my mobile device, the keyboard is missing a tab key.

Re:Open Source doesn't win by being cheaper on Thursday September 28, 2023 @12:20AM (#37685192)
I don’t understand your comment. Isn’t it the same if Amazon falsely claims to not have access to the data and if another company falsely claims to use some specific software?
Re:Netflix Is Responsible for 15% of Global Internet Traffic on Thursday August 17, 2023 @03:41PM (#37166899)
A TCP connection has exactly two endpoints. Netflix hypothetically could always decide not to sell their product
I‘d love to see a list of the largest emitters.

Ok, this can also depend on the state or on the school. But in Berlin, they taught us this in PE

In Germany, it‘s a relevant part of elementary school.
It takes a shit ton of time if to weasel around the GDPR if your business model is to collect as much personal data as possible.
It’s just that there was a time in Europe (about 80 years ago) when among other cruel things, the honor and reputation of a lot of people were actively destroyed for arbitrary reasons.
It's called “Godot”, of course you have to wait for it.
Have you considered consulting a psychiatrist?
Are there popular tax avoidance schemes using the Netherlands?

Double Irish with a Dutch sandwich seems to be deprecated.

Great that the Dutch cabinet is stepping up their fight against tax avoidance.

Re:Germany falls into recession as inflation hits economy on Saturday May 27, 2023 @06:06PM (#36098838)
The plants in Germany would have been due for expensive maintenance and they are old. (Maybe not EOL old but old)
Haha, I totally know what these words mean.
