Re:Tell HN: AIs Do Not Laugh on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:05AM (#50056661)
Not true. I have had interactions where I will tell it something that is unbelievable (even to a slight degree) and it will laugh (ChatGPT).
Re:Ask HN: What do you expect from the next 5 years of AI? on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:34AM (#49803012)

We got a small taste of that when Claude pulled Opus 4.6 from public use. You either paid a lot more to access better models or you were restricted to extremely limited access.

Re:Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world? on Sunday September 20, 2026 @11:37AM (#49776917)
I assume the paid work is issued via a private repo and not full access?
I'll tell you what I would tell myself if given the chance: Learn to take (calculated) risks and to be free of the weight of the judgement of others. Learn to do the baseline things that keep you healthy in body and mind and maintain them.

As for reading, I don't think any one book will affect everyone the same way or have the same impact, but do read. Don't be afraid to read things that make you uncomfortable. In fact, embrace discomfort in reading and in all aspects of life.

At my mother's workplace, there was a group of coworkers who each donated an amount of money per paycheck. Each paycheck, one coworker would get the lump sum that was collected for that paycheck. Similar concept to the one described here. They called it "susu" or something to that effect. If I remember correctly, it got messy when people would leave the workplace or when, occasionally, someone would get robbed on the way home.
ELI5? What are the factors and implications?
Once you no longer "own" the code, does it matter? If you provide a very detail set of specifications and success criteria then you can turn it into a black box. The code is no longer the asset, just the business that uses it. You can use AI to extract the requirements from the existing code and then modify as needed however, I would recommend doing this in two phases: first the conversion, then the enhancements.
Re:Ask HN: How do you review AI code? on Sunday July 12, 2026 @01:37PM (#48882892)
- I review once the code is functionally doing what I am looking for.

- I try to keep the features small so that the code is manageable.

- After manually reviewing, I ask it to review the code. Assuming you have coding standards well defined, you will find that it may not follow those standards during development so having an isolated review step seems to provide better results.

I'd love to hear more about that. Could you provide more details? Is there a noticeable shift in the job market?
Re:Ask HN: How Do You Relax? on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @10:59AM (#47691167)
This is true. I was in the ocean this past weekend for the first time in almost a year and though the water was cold, the 20 minutes or so I was in there felt like an eternity and left me feeling much better.
Re:Facebook is cooked on Friday February 20, 2026 @04:26PM (#47094202)
My main use case for FB is a group related to reviewing restaurants in the area. I have no FB friends/connections. I use messenger for my one friend who insists on using it. It is mostly slop (and strangely I get posts from that same relationship account), I scroll for about 5 minutes at a time before I realize it is not worth looking at. And truthfully, that is what I want from social media: a few minutes worth of distraction followed by the feeling that I had just wasted my time and then on to something more meaningful.
Re:Ask HN: Claude Opus performance affected by time of day? on Friday January 16, 2026 @04:42PM (#46652611)
Precisely. Once I point out the fact that it is doing this, it seems to produce better results for a bit before going back to the same.

I jokingly (and not so) thought that it was trained on data that made it think it should be tired at the end of the day.

But it is happening daily and at night.

Ask HN: Claude Opus performance affected by time of day?

I am a big fan of Claude Opus as it has been very good at understanding feature requests and generally staying consistent with my codebase (completely written from scratch using Opus).I've noticed recently that when I am using Opus at night (Eastern US), I am seeing it go down extreme rabbit holes on the same types of requests I am putting through on a regular basis. It is more likely to...

Re:Ask HN: What are you buying your kids for Christmas? on Friday December 12, 2025 @11:19AM (#46245585)
I think it will be B&N gift cards for my just-about-to-be-teen daughters. It will encourage them to buy and use something physical whether drawing supplies or books. Fingers crossed.
Re:Ask HN: How common is banning Docker? on Friday November 14, 2025 @09:30AM (#45927014)
Every environment is a copy of the data, I would imagine. I think you would want to limit spawning of copies of your data in an offshore outsourced environment for security reasons. That's my guess.

Lenovo Legion 5i. It fails at its primary purpose of being a gaming laptop by having memory/graphics issues while playing games.
Astigmatic and find it difficult to concentrate on dark mode. Light mode burns my eyes so I go with themes like Cobalt 2 on VS Code that are less harsh yet provide enough contrast to allow me to identify what I am scanning for.
Thanks for the warning. I held off on the update for fear that it would break development tooling, but had considered upgrading.
I received a notification this week that YouTube is unable to verify my age and so will filter certain types of content. This account is 10 years old (or more) and I watch a very specific set of content types that haven't deviated and clearly point to an adult. I assume they are rolling out the final piece of the effort to remove anonymity from the internet as nothing else has changed.
