You don't speak for everyone, pipe down. Furthermore, nobody is forcing you to use these features.
Re:Chromium devs want the browser to talk to devices, computers directly
on Sunday August 23, 2020 @10:20PM (#24257048)
Guys, "The Birth & Death of JavaScript" was supposed to be a joke. In all seriousness though, I'm beginning to get tired of webdevs reading OS books and going "oh, this would be a great addition to The Web™". Slap "in the browser" after a feature all operating systems have supported for decades and you'll hit the front page of HN in no time. What's old is new again and all that.

Is this some misguided late April fools joke?

Are you joking? Both C and C++ are equally littered with unsafe "features".
Re:European parliament strongly recommends open source software
on Saturday May 23, 2020 @08:35AM (#23282421)
I recall several European nations switching government systems over to Linux only to have Microsoft worm their way back in a few years later. Let's hope it's permanent this time.
Re:Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust

Great, can the client be ported to Rust while you're at it? Electron is such a joke.
Re:Please don't use Slack for FOSS projects (2015)
on Thursday October 31, 2019 @11:27PM (#21416048)
As much as I dislike using a proprietary chat app, Discord is well designed and easy to use. Reliving the early internet is great and all but my time is limited, and I'm sick of sacrificing my time and sanity faffing around with bouncers and garbage IRC clients. It's the same reason I use macOS instead of Linux. I don't just want a Unix environment, I want a polished Unix environment where apps don't have Linux UI syndrome and plugging in an external monitor doesn't require me to pull up the man page for xrandr. That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Surprising absolutely nobody.
Re:Engineers develop bone-like metal foam that can be 'healed' at room...
on Friday August 30, 2019 @12:27AM (#20835978)
Can we please stop with the clickbait scientific discoveries? They all follow the same formula of: 'x develops y which can "z"'. Where "z", which is always in quotes, is a gross sensationalization of some discovery or effect.
Re:Rust GUI ecosystem overview

An Electron flame war seems inevitable. It's fine for quick cross platform support but it absolutely screws over the user. QT is far from perfect but at least it's native.
Re:Super Mario 64 has been decompiled
on Friday July 12, 2019 @07:56AM (#20420008)
From some brief research, a developer reported they're only 60% of the way there and the audio system hasn't been decompiled yet.
Re:1Password: Standalone / Local Vault Option Gone?
on Friday July 12, 2019 @12:14AM (#20418083)
I currently have a subscription to 1Password, I have no problems paying for a good service that's well designed, implemented and secure. That being said, I am a student so every dollar counts. Does anyone have experience switching from 1Pass to Bitwarden?
Re:GCC should warn about 2^16 and 2^32 and 2^64
on Monday June 17, 2019 @06:25AM (#20201528)
Heuristics like this are important because humans are not machines. If you run into a warning in one of these situations, they are usually rectified by changing the statement slightly. Worst case scenario you can #pragma push and pop the warning.

Re:Microsoft is going to ship a full Linux kernel in Windows 10
on Tuesday May 07, 2019 @01:40PM (#19851650)
I have been noticing an uptick in pro Microsoft propaganda on Hacker News. Does Microsoft seriously think developers opinions can be swayed by some lip service after almost 3 decades of abuse?

Any HN post mentioning C++ will inevitably be invaded by the Rust Evangelism Strikeforce.
