I have thought through tough problems using pen and paper. Have tried a lot of iterations of digital notebooks, but lost the fluidity and malleability of paper.

These days I have found the iPad + Pencil with an infinite canvas to be the best fit. I use Ahmni (https://www.ahmni.app/) which is a delight.

It did happen in the Muslim world. There are "slave" dynasties in many parts of that world (Egypt, India) which were robust dynasties borne out of freed slaves.

I think Muziqi ought to satisfy most of these for audiobooks. Podcasts is on the list.

A feature-rich, nice looking audio player for those who don't stream music: https://sakunlabs.com/muziqi

It has 90% of the features that I wanted, and now I am working on what my users want.

For macOS Ionica is really really good: https://ionica.app/

For iOS I would suggest my own app Muziqi https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muziqi-for-music-lovers/id6468...

Not open source, but it’s the closest I have come to Winamp. It’s really good!

Re:Replicating D3 Charts with Swift Charts on Wednesday July 10, 2024 @06:21PM (#40932077)
Not directly, but like most of the examples in the repository, they can be recreated with some custom drawing.

Thank you for Swift Charts. I was surprised by how flexible and powerful the API is.
I made a music app for iOS for myself, after not finding anything that did what I wanted as a non-streamer: visualization, audiobooks support, section loops, bookmarks, sleep timers, import from any source, etc.

In the end, I did put it on the App Store (after months of cleanup!) but it's easily the most used app on my phone.

Re:Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use? on Wednesday December 13, 2023 @11:23AM (#38629628)
I made a Music app for iOS that is geared towards offline libraries and has features like visualizer, EQ, sleep timer that I couldn't find anywhere else.

I am almost ready with the music app that I have always wanted; a fully featured app for those of us who love to buy and listen to our own collection. Here is an introductory blog post: https://sakunlabs.com/blog/muziqi-intro/

Some of the features I am including in this version: - import music from the Music app (downloaded locally), from Files app, via a web server - a music visualizer, with three presets - waveform views - mark and store segments of a song - bookmarks - an equalizer and a bunch of smaller features, like pinning music to the Home view, remembering playback for an album or playlist.

Re:Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on? on Friday September 16, 2022 @06:33PM (#32872887)
Building a successor to https://metaset.io. My first stab at this problem (a native data visualization app) was OK, but left a lot to be desired in efficient user workflow.

I am having another go at it, this time with Swift Charts and SwiftUI on the Mac.

How different is the state managementin SwiftUI compared to the state in rui?
Re:Zas Editor on Thursday April 07, 2022 @11:46PM (#30953135)
There has been a resurgence of native editors these days (Helix, Nova, …). Every time I rush to check if there are vim keybindings. It's a dealbreaker otherwise!
Re:Ask HN: Tools to visualize data in SQL databases? on Sunday February 13, 2022 @03:36PM (#30325394)
I wrote an app recently for macOS called Metaset: https://metaset.io/
In terms of legibility, aesthetic balance, and not being over-engineered, I haven’t found anything better than M+ 1: https://macwright.com/2014/07/09/mplus.html
Re:Dev Fonts on Friday November 20, 2020 @01:05PM (#25163087)
My favorite is always missing: https://macwright.com/2014/07/09/mplus.html
I made Metaset (https://metaset.io) to quickly do visual analysis on data sets. Started from my own needs for a project that spit out large CSV files. Excel or Tableau were too cumbersome and I didn't bother doing pandas and matplotlib.

Later I found someone with a similar need but for Postgres databases. It's been pulling in a decent side income.

I am embarrassed by the amateur UI. There is so much I want to do around "smart" visualization, but haven't had time.

https://metaset.io is a macOS app to quickly visualize CSV, Postgres, or SQLite data with charts.

Should be San Francisco.

Ask HN: Technical books for the BART

I am on the hunt for a good CS related book I can read on the BART without needing to crack open a computer to do the exercises. I have read quite a few non fiction and fiction books but miss books that are in my field. I tried the SICP but it was hard to get a lot out of it without writing the code itself. Last time I enjoyed a book in this domain on the BART was the Heads First Design...
