If you're genuinely not trying to be dismissive and just have a sincere question you want to have an answer to then I _strongly_ implore you to be more aware of and careful about how you express yourself.

Because as your first sentence is worded virtually all readers will assume you are hostile and not asking in good faith.

> I'm half convinced the first run of the LHC split the timeline and we've landed in the evil one.

Sadly the real answer is much less dramatic: we did this entirely to ourselves, voluntarily, purely out of lazily taking the path of least resistance offered us by companies that don't have our best interests in mind.

Why would you have to give consent? It's a legal requirement that the information is public. I genuinely don't understand your point there, do you also complain that you had to pay taxes and you weren't even asked for consent?

Individual memberships are priced 1000x higher than individual ad revenue because only 1 in 1000 users will pay for membership.

You should read Time by Stephen Baxter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_(novel). Part of it deals with this precise topic.
70% of the posts on HN are already satire and performance art
Sort of like how there's a running joke, "this meeting could have been an email"; I think that for all the substance I found in this "4 minutes to read" blog post, it could have been a one-sentence comment in some discussion thread somewhere instead.

Are you as familiar with "condescending" as you are with "passive aggressive"?

Right, but you know what's even more effective than ads in search? Biased (towards paying customers) information in LLM output.

This is no specific comment on the article or its contents. But I am getting extremely tired of headlines that follow the "X just Y (and it changes everything you thought you knew about Z)" pattern.
You're almost right, but "class" and "caste" are not synonyms and cannot be used interchangeably.
Where's the accountability here? Good luck going after an LLM for writing defamatory blog posts.

If you wanted to make people agree that anonymity on the internet is no longer a right people should enjoy this sort of thing is exactly the way to go about it.

Every day that goes by makes the Butlerian Jihad seem less and less like an overreaction.

I might be out of touch, wasn't Chromium itself originally "ungoogled Chrome"?

Which makes it all the stranger that you're complaining about others doing the same.

No, it doesn't even remotely sound like such a thing.
Alternatively, the fact that the very first thing basically everyone who isn't Linus has done with vanilla git is introduce some kind of central authority might suggest that what git was "specifically designed for" is more of an outlier than you want to admit.

Everyone knows Linus invented and "specifically designed" git as a drop-in tool for his existing email-patch-based kernel development workflow, which is not how 99.9% of the rest of the world prefers to operate these days.

Re:Swedish union declares strike for Tesla employees on Tuesday October 17, 2023 @10:40AM (#37915843)
They go into details [here](https://www.ifmetall.se/aktuellt/tesla/darfor-tvingas-if-met...) (only in Swedish unfortunately). Basically they say that despite repeated attempts to negotiate a collective agreement Tesla employees have fewer guarantees, lower salaries, and fewer prospects compared to members at other companies with such agreements.

What a completely unnecessary thing to say in the middle of an otherwise reasonable post.

Yeah... I'm going to go ahead and assume there's a little more to it that you're telling us.

Why not go the whole hog and just make it illegal to be Black in public?
You are doing their job for them. A worker with slightly better prospects than others is still just a worker and ultimately still in the same precarious situation as they must still seek employment to earn a salary to live.
I remember I think it was when they first landed the booster successfully, there was a big "USA! USA! USA!" cheer from mission control. I thought that was a bit of an ugly look myself.
Again, this is very USA-specific.

What would prevent one person taking a handful of tickets home and answering the survey a dozen separate times, skewing the results dramatically?
I also found His Dark Materials a lot harder to read the second time, when I was in my 20s, compared to the first time I read it in my teens. That said, I have to admit he's grown up a lot further since then; his new series, The Book of Dust, which is set 12 years earlier is a lot more mature in its themes.

Well, thank goodness we're all managing to retain some perspective and not just descending into performative melodrama.

All the data they were collecting before that GDPR said they had to stop collecting (without freely given consent).
