Re:Ask YC: The way hackers plan software on Monday November 26, 2007 @01:20PM (#83635)
this isn't the greatest answer, but it's what we do: we do what makes sense based on the information available at the time. and then we adjust what we're doing based on the information gained as the project goes on. sometimes core mods have to be built first. sometimes we can grab low-hanging fruit first.

so, i'd have to say "it depends."

no one can answer this question for you, in my opinion. not without a full understanding of the history and objectives. and even then, it'll be wrong and have to be adjusted as the project unfolds.

so i suppose i agree with robmnl, but methodology alone isn't the cure.

recently i've been listening to recordings of street noise from my walk to work. it seems to be helping me achieve flow faster. i get my best flow when walking to work, so i figure i'd try it. anyone else interested in trying out some of these recordings? i'll post them if there's interest in an experiment.
That the "business person" in a typical startup doesn't have anything better to do during the build phase creates typical startups, in my opinion. Brilliant people should be doing brilliant things. If they're not, maybe they're not.
Re:Practicing Proper Project Management Process on Wednesday October 17, 2007 @12:58PM (#69101)
we set milestones. but we don't worry about methodology.

we do feel the need to manage development efficiently. again, we're small, so we sketch the future state almost constantly. we keep the burning stuff in our brains all the time. the less important stuff either comes up again or it doesn't. most of the time it doesn't.

doatheistmenwantchildrenordotheymerelyaccedebecausetheirwivesreallywantchildren.com may still be available.

if it is, you should jump on that.

if not sv, i wouldn't move it anywhere. (currently in chicago)

Re:Free idea: candy aisle on Wednesday October 10, 2007 @05:47PM (#66021)
rightcart looks like it might work, but it's not apparent how the pricing model is structured. i assume i have to sign up to get that info. (and i'm not paying a buck for a "wink" - whatever that means.)
Re:Free idea: candy aisle on Wednesday October 10, 2007 @05:43PM (#66017)
i'm still checking out amazon, but blinkcart is too, well, blinky for my tastes. i'm not a big fan of the lightbox effect and when the store pops up it's loud.

market validation. you should be their competition.
Re:Free idea: candy aisle on Wednesday October 10, 2007 @02:04PM (#65894)
you should do it them. i don't have the time to do it myself, but would be a willing first customer.
Re:Why to Move to a Startup Hub on Wednesday October 10, 2007 @11:21AM (#65827)
i'm not sure you could get an apples to apples comparison. each opportunity is too unique.

Free idea: candy aisle

create an e-commerce widget that formats vertically for inclusion in blogs and on web sites. (leftnav, rightnav) a good place to sell you e-books, t-shirts, etc.make it free to use and pick up a % + transaction fee. hook it up with amazon and others with affiliates programs for those without things to sell.

point of curiosity: according to your site, valleyschwag, who was your inspiration, recently decided to close up shop. what do you think you can do better/cheaper/faster to keep the same thing from happening to you?

Re:What class in college did you get the most out of? on Friday September 21, 2007 @12:18PM (#57984)
I only went to college for 2 weeks, but I enjoyed sculpture. Everything else seemed like a bad joke.
