Hah! I've def made this mistake
We've tried to focus Notejoy on being as intuitive as possible to support any kind of team. Because of this, we've seen a variety of teams beyond just startups adopt Notejoy, including coffee shops, law firms, freelancers, agencies, coaches, and more.
While we have no plans to go anywhere at Notejoy, we do acknowledge that this fear is very real. So to address it we support full bulk export of all your notes to Google Drive at any point, so you can rest assured that you'll always be able to take them with you.
Appreciate the feedback! I assume you got that impression because of the homepage's focus on collaboration as opposed to just individual productivity? Turns out we've focused a lot on individual productivity features and have lots of folks using it that way, but we leaned into the collaborative notes messaging for our homepage since that's what truly makes us unique in the space.
Would love folks to check out our app, Notejoy, at
https://notejoy.com - an Evernote alternative with apps for Mac, PC, iOS, web, and Android coming soon. Complete with markdown support, integrations with Slack, Trello, G Suite, and Office. Powerful search with snippets & highlights. Great for team collaboration as well, with real-time editing, threaded comments, and more. Would love your thoughts!
Sachin Rekhi here, YC alum from 2007. Wanted to throw a plug out for our app Notejoy:
https://notejoy.comWe've built Notejoy as a collaborative notes app. So it's not only great for personal notes, but also great for easily sharing notes with your team with real-time editing, @mentions, threaded comments, and more.
But also built with a lot of the productivity features you expect from a note-taking app, including Mac, Windows, iOS apps, keyboard shortcuts / markdown accelerators, syntax highlighting, clean distraction-free interface, and more.
Hey HN! Just opened up my new app to more users. Trying to build a powerful productivity app that's also great at team collaboration as I've always felt in the past tools have been mainly one or the other. Would love any feedback from the community!

I definitely agree that there will always be and should be services that are free while others that are paid.
However, I think what we saw in the last 5 years was an unhealthy focus on free where products that people may have been willing to pay for were driven to free because they were either subsidized by VC dollars, subsidized by cash cow business like Google's search, or eventual acquisitions by acquirers not necessarily looking for sustainable businesses. This may well have eroded a lot of potential value in that consumers have gotten used to these services being free and will likely not be willing to pay for them in the future.

congrats pg and x! So exciting :)
Here are some things to think about...
Are you planning on direct sales or remnant advertising? Early on you'll likely be only leveraging remnant advertising since direct sales requires a large sales team or sales rep firms.
The next question is how much of your traffic is expected to be US vs international. US traffic still has some value, versus most international countries (outside of a few top markets like UK, Canada, etc) have very little online ad spend. Take a look at the following data of internet ad spend per capita in top countries to help scale revenue projections depending on expected country traffic:

You'll next want to calculate number of impressions you expect on a daily or monthly basis. Just take expected growth rates for unique visitors and come up with some realistic estimates of page views per visit and number of ads per page.
Then take a look at this recent PubMatic report to get some estimates on average remnant advertising CPMs for multiple verticals:

While I love Spotify as a user experience and definitely plan on using it myself, I'm not bullish on pure music consumption apps as a business. The music labels have unfortunately made it very difficult to get content licenses and even for those who have gotten content licenses, have made it very expensive.
Check out David Pakman's post for more details on how bad the label deals are for most music consumption apps:

You are right, it is a pretty confusing process. Here is the best docs I could find on the topic. You basically setup your domain first with Google Apps for your domain. Then you link the Google Apps for your domain account with your Google App Engine project. The additional issue is that you can't map naked domains (
http://domain.com) to Google App Engine directly. Instead you have to do that within your DNS provider (I set it up in GoDaddy).
