Excellent work, also when you say by hand do you mean you had some autocomplete that autocompleted or showed you inline docs for method calls or did you actually write it by hand with no autocomplete at all?
Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Friday September 11, 2026 @07:28PM (#49666835)
thank you for this commentary, as a violinist / software engineer / "computer scientist" / "mathematician" i can see that studying and doing math will still remain a thing that humans have to do to train their own brains to think and to form better neuronal connections. We may not get paid to do it anymore but it will still be important for our own development for the same reasons orchestras and bands still exist in elementary schools and beyond (at least in many parts of the US).
Re:On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @11:23PM (#49620496)
created a simulation of the solution to describe what's happening and why it's important for engineers, climate modeling, etc : https://navier-stokes-singularity-simulator.netlify.app/ (updated so that it works better on mobile)
Re:Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf] on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @08:47PM (#49619276)
openai beat me to finding a singularity in navier stokes but i made this simulation that you can play around with and it also explains why this was important : https://navier-stokes-singularity-simulator.netlify.app/
most americans say not in my backyard to more housing in their backyard too, but i digress.

Re:Preliminary report into Air India crash released on Saturday July 12, 2025 @10:26PM (#44546984)
Captain Steve discusses mental health issues amongst pilots during his discussion of the AI events after this most recent news. He's a trained counselor who got into counseling pilots exactly because of mental health issues he's seen with colleagues and students https://youtu.be/MD64uYK926o?t=742 .

If you work in a job where the lives of hundreds could be ended in seconds due to an error or intentional action then there is no excuse to not have critical control surfaces recorded at all times. Non-commercial/private flights/flight instructors and trainees have cameras, trains have camera, stores have cameras, casinos have cameras, buses have cameras, workers who work for ride hailing services have cameras as do millions of other people who just drive.

Hopefully other countries will start deploying recording systems or start forcing manufacturers of planes to have these integrated into cockpits.

Re:Online Embedded Rust Simulator on Sunday March 09, 2025 @11:02AM (#43309608)
TX for this! My older kid and I are learning Rust with Rustlings, but this will help me add a physical element to it (even though it's simulated), eventually we may get an esp32. Younger kid loves doing Microsoft microbit, he will definitely be interested in this.
Re:I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs on Monday February 17, 2025 @01:30PM (#43081889)
This is amazing work! If folks have ever wondered why suspend is so difficult to get working on linux and why debugging it is equally difficult, this is a single datapoint with lots of information about all the things that can go wrong. Even now I have a thinkpad P1G4 where the fans won't turn off automatically unless I turn them off before going into suspend. Recently I also started having crackling issues with my bluetooth headphones after resuming from suspend and had to disable node suspension there also (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PipeWire#Noticeable_audio_d...).
Re:Gladiators in ancient Anatolia lived to entertain the masses on Thursday November 07, 2024 @10:26AM (#42077453)
this is the one that I ended up watching a few days ago after the one above came into my feed : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmat8xK9raM
is the idea to eventually make muscle fibers with lots of these stranded together?
what you're telling me is that SMCI doesn't care if NVDA or INTC or even AMD outperforms on their hardware, they'll make axes and shovels for anyone and profit either way :)
Re:U.S. opens UnitedHealth antitrust probe on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @07:54PM (#39532490)
There's also this : https://www.reuters.com/technology/cybersecurity/cyber-secur... , this hack caused by malware from 2021, caused huge portions of their employee base tied to optum and their change healthcare acquisitions to be unable to work for days (and it's still ongoing!). I guess their employees got a "vacation" out of it while everyone else waiting on prescriptions at CVS, etc got shafted. It literally took a huge portion of the US pharmacy network to go down for the US to realize what a big problem UNH is.

This is the answer!

Re:NYC Subway Rat Detector on Thursday November 02, 2023 @06:22PM (#38121144)
Take data from the rat subway detector, overlay it with the # of restaurants/grocery stores in a given area, and i'd bet you'd find a pretty good correlation. Follow the (thrown away) food.
Re:Austria rail operator OeBB unveils new night trains on Sunday October 08, 2023 @10:45AM (#37810918)
i don't know about these new night trains but oebb.at is what made our euro trip more affordable. We purchased our eurail pass but then got so confused as to how to purchase the reservations on italian high speed trains using the reduced eurail rates. Eurail's website wasn't showing the routes and trenitalia doesn't have pricing for eurail holders either. Then I learned from some eurail forum that we had to go through oebb's website to purchase the reservations. Thank you oebb and thank you revolut for making USD -> CHF, EUR, GBP conversions super easy.
good! predicted this would happen 2 years ago
Re:Bram Moolenaar Passed Away on Saturday August 05, 2023 @12:38PM (#37013754)
RIP Bram, thanks for all the shortcuts!

ahh i see, it's only on a super wide browser window that it doesn't look correct :

You may want to limit the absolute size of the top banner/image so it doesn't go past the width of the text area

My kids play with these controllers a few times a week, the latency is horrible
Why is the picture not centered on the top?
I love it, thanks for 2x voice speed up
Re:De-Stressing Booking.com on Sunday April 16, 2023 @08:37PM (#35595511)
i'd be happy forego having to directly use a computer at all. I really want "Ok google, book an apartment for 4 in this region of <x>. Make sure it has blah blah amenities and blah blah beds" ..then have it show me some options and pictures on my phone or ar/vr headset, i say ok book the thing, and it just does it.
