If you are using the network of a hotel or a train station, for instance. Assumption is that you trust that VPN provider of course.
Re:The Many Sides of Jack Dorsey on Friday July 20, 2012 @03:21PM (#4272473)
I had heard from square, but never bothered to look up what they exactly do. I've been surfing through their wikipedia entry and website (very nice design!), and it looks very intriguing.

Now the question is of course, who has had some experience with it? Is this confined to SF, other american cities? Does it work as elegantly as it looks? Paying with a credit card at a restaurant always seems to take forever, I'd like to be able to spare some hassle.

Re:How Google's Marissa Mayer Prevents Burnout on Monday June 25, 2012 @10:22AM (#4156608)
First of all, I very much doubt that she actually worked 130 hours per week with any regularity. That comes to 18.5 hours per day, including sundays. Even assuming that she could survive with 3 hours of sleep per day (yeah, sure), it leaves almost no time to eat, commute, or god, even going to the bathroom.

And why in the world is she giving advice on burnout?

some sport teams are treated more as a toy than an investment by their owners, like Chelsea or Man. City.
interesting! I'll try to show up too
Re:TylerWM - a tiling window manager for OSX on Thursday February 23, 2012 @08:47AM (#3624883)
I've looked around a bit, but I didn't find how do you configure the layouts. Is it with a config in a particular language, a la XMonad, or something else?
Re:Poll: Hackernews Meetup: Stuttgart, Germany on Tuesday February 21, 2012 @07:44AM (#3616266)
munich would be cool
"if someone wants to track you, they will find a way."

true, but the key thing is how much effort does it take. If NSA-like resources are needed, well then you are pretty damn safe. But if some guy can find you in two minutes by using just Google, that's something you might want to check.

nothing. I've discovered I had the same pwd for the panel and for the ssh access, although I almost never use the ssh one. Time to check every password, it seems ...
Re:How to travel around the world for a year. on Tuesday January 17, 2012 @03:43PM (#3476386)
What are you waiting for to write those posts? I'd love to read how you manage to change your country of residence, and about all the small things that you have to consider.
Re:VW deactivates employee email outside working hours on Friday December 23, 2011 @01:55PM (#3386709)
that is not true. In Europe, when you say "I have 30 days of holidays", that means 30 days that you can personally take off whenever you want (more or less). National holidays, like Christmas, are never counted because they are free for everybody. So assuming the US and Europe have a similar number of national holidays, you get about 2x more personal holidays in Europe.

(Again, this varies. In Germany it is usually around 28-30, in Spain around 22)

Re:VW deactivates employee email outside working hours on Friday December 23, 2011 @01:07PM (#3386532)
I live in Germany, and I know many engineers who work for one of the big carmakers (either directly or through some external company). Most of them are under some form of collective bargaining agreement. They have a lot of nice perks, like paid overtime (in the form of days of) and pretty good salaries.

Meanwhile I work as a developer for an internet company. I've never heard of anybody working under a CBA, or any kind of compensation for overtime (except for extreme cases, like working on sundays). I earn significantly less too.

So I guess unions can be good sometimes, or something.

Re:Emacs for the rest of us: ErgoEmacs on Friday December 23, 2011 @12:58PM (#3386492)
I think the biggest change for regular users is a good package manager. ELPA is coming per default in emacs24, and there is a project in github (el-get) that is even better. I have a pretty big emacs config, and configuring some external modules (and updating them!) used to be a nightmare. Now it has gotten much easier.
Re:The Wasteful Legacy of Programming as Language on Saturday November 26, 2011 @09:44AM (#3279834)
"the only difference between a Java programmer and a C# programmer is that they use somewhat different keywords and have to program against a different run time library"

yeah well, most people spend their time combining libraries and making them interact with each other, so it is actually kind of a big difference.

Re:I know apps - Scott Hanselman on Wednesday October 26, 2011 @06:05AM (#3157842)
I liked a lot this sentence:

"Do you have 20 years experience or do you have the same 1 year of experience twenty times"

If you have been doing the same thing 10 years without ever learning something new, in my view that is not a very big advantage over someone with less exp.

Re:Reasons to use Guava on Saturday October 22, 2011 @08:26AM (#3143414)
I am a fan of Guava, not just as a very useful library, but as a way to read really good Java code. Check the source out, it is imo a must if you are a java dev.

One thing I'm not a fan of is the functional stuff. The idea is good, but java is just too verbose. Without real lambdas, like C# has now, it ends up being not so useful.

Re:On plane travel on Sunday October 09, 2011 @08:08AM (#3090317)
I try to always fly with Lufthansa, even if it is a bit more expensive. They are usually on time and they serve food and drinks. You can almost guarantee that Iberia will have some delay. KLM is also nice.

To avoid: Ryanair. Seriously, even if it's cheap it is not worth it. Also, the one time I flew with Alitalia I got the worst headache I've gotten flying.

Re:The new tax havens on Sunday August 21, 2011 @08:30AM (#2909070)
I think this 'tax amnesty' borders on extortion. So all these companies used every loophole they could find to pay lower taxes, and now they want to bring the booty back, and it has to be for free. Assuming this happens, what prevents them from doing the same thing again?
Re:Cutting-edge IT firms need experts in 'dead' languages on Wednesday August 17, 2011 @09:05AM (#2895155)
Summary: "We want to fill positions using ancient and obsolete systems that nobody would like to touch, BUT we are not going to pay any premium for it. We wonder why developers are not falling over themselves to come work for us."
Re:Ceglia: Facebook planted a fake contract on my computer on Wednesday August 17, 2011 @08:43AM (#2895080)
geez, Am I the only one that thought that this guy made an ass of himself with this "interview"?
Re:John Carmack QuakeCon 2011 Keynote on Saturday August 06, 2011 @03:49PM (#2854736)
man, I love hearing what Carmack has to say about anything SW related.
Re:Facebook has your complete phonebook on Saturday August 06, 2011 @11:41AM (#2854094)
For the iPhone, if you want to check if you are sharing your contacts, open the Facebook app, go to Main Menu > Friends, click the icon on the upper right and then Sync Contacts.

I believe the syncing option is off by default

Re:Poll: Have you read SICP? on Thursday August 04, 2011 @02:06PM (#2847037)
I read it but didn't do most of the exercises, which amounts to 75% at most I guess
Re:Peteris Krumins: 4 years of blogging on Wednesday August 03, 2011 @04:45PM (#2842985)
congrats! Your posts on bash and sed/awk helped me a lot in my (ongoing) quest of mastering the terminal.
Re:Elegant Markdown for a more civilized age on Wednesday August 03, 2011 @03:36PM (#2842655)
For blog posts, README's for github and stuff like that the source in markdown kind of looks better than the equivalent HTML tag soup.

In fact, I wouldn't mind if javadoc supported it too.

Re:Quantly: News for quants on Wednesday August 03, 2011 @01:05PM (#2841924)
oh that one, I didn't recognize the name. Thx
Re:Quantly: News for quants on Wednesday August 03, 2011 @11:55AM (#2841619)
which blog are you refering to? I don't seem to find anything by Veyron on Google
Re:How Stuxnet was deciphered on Thursday July 14, 2011 @05:18PM (#2765173)
exactly. It is the kind of thing you expect from a Hollywood movie, except it actually happened. And with a Mossad/NSA angle to boot!
Re:How many resumes does it take to make an intern? on Tuesday June 28, 2011 @01:03PM (#2706167)
well, if the people who are rejecting you are doing it to go work for Google or Facebook, you've done a good job with the image of your company.
