You've got lots of nice curves on your site, then these sharp angles in your green banner.

To my eye, it puts off the whole layout a bit.

Ask HN: Webpayment gateway (Australia)

I've gone off and read all the articles using (google) "site:news.ycombinator.com payment gateway australia" and havent found any really good stuff on webpayment gateways in australia. Is there anyone out there who has used, and integrated a web payment gateway in australia? what are your experiences with the provider/with the integration?Because of all the horror stories, i'm going to keep...

Ask HN: Low priced commodity hardware

I'm building a consumer routing type device and need some low priced hardware that can run linux. The hardware needs to be able to support 802.11g/n and have at least one ethernet port (three preferable).I've built a prototype using the board from pcengines.ch (which is a great bit of kit), however to make this thing commercially viable, i need a board that comes in at about 1/2 the price, say...

back in the day i used something called Essbase to do financial modelling for $megacorp it was/is a multidimensional solution, and would seem to fit your needs.

i'm not sure what the current status of it is, but it could be a good starting point to research some more modern options.

point 2) perhaps finding a local partner to ship stuff that is already in the country might be a decent way around this..

i have much more energy now than i did before i started this routine about 3 years ago!

When to look for investors?

I'm a 1st time entrepreneur who's got a great idea, and being my 1st time, not a lot of clue.I've developed a proof of concept and have sourced hardware for a prototype and am creating a business plan to flesh out the idea (which as an IT guy is pretty tough going).my idea is validated by friends saying they know people (and who are people) who have been looking for this specific solution but...

Re:Non-web startups, anyone is doing these? on Sunday October 11, 2009 @08:14PM (#875601)
My GF is starting up a business in head hunting in the energy sector: http://www.boolos.com/

predictably times are slow right now so to lift the profile of our startup she has created a blog at blog.boolos.com which is well received by her peers.

when i was a kid i used to go to sleep with the radio on. in the country town i was from all we had at the time was an AM station that played classics.

as a teenager i found that i knew the words to _heaps_ of classic tracks. i'm not sure if its because of the conscious or the unconscious (ie sleeping) (or a combination of both) listening i did, but found it weird.

remembering this (in my 30's now), i thought it would be and interesting experiment to try it again, pretty much trying to pick stuff up by osmosis.

I have some learn french audio books and put them on in my ears while performing various tasks. the idea is that i dont concentrate on the book per se, but the other task at hand.

for me in my 30's now, there wasnt the expected "kung fu, i know kung fu" moment, so i thought, as i dont use french in my normal day to day activities it didnt really work so well.

later on (with my french speaking GF) we would have a chat and i would ask things like "is this a french word" etc etc... i'm not sure these words were from previous conversations, or whatever, so from a scientific POV, its pretty much a negative... in my unscientific opinion however, i think that i have absorbed a bit of french from the osmosis type of learning.

i guess it depends on your goals and what you want to achieve.

if you want to pick up hard facts quickly, then learning by osmosis, at least in my experience, is not a very efficient way of doing it.

if you just want to pick things up "along the way" the learning my osmosis may work for you, however keep in mind you may not have the "kung fu, i know kung fu" moments.

as always YMMV :-)

Re:Ask PG: When should founders start taking a salary? on Monday August 10, 2009 @11:59PM (#754617)
i can confirm this is actually the case. my GF and i have started up own own company (plug: http://www.boolos.com/ ; disclaimer: head hunting in energy). our accountant has given us exactly that advice, and you dont pay tax on it.
