This guy sounds like an asshole. If he is so concerned about the current state of affairs he should write an application and show the world real problem solving concepts. Instead he rages about something and in the end pretends to be smarter than he actually is.

Ask HN: How do you prevent people in a referral system from referring itself?

I have a referral system in my website where I award users for referring people to join my website. I know that IP address can be faked so that can't be used in my use case. Letting the users enter mobile number is to extensive for my system and entering credit card is also very extensive for my system. So is there a service who can track referrers uniquely? Or how can I build one?

Ask HN: Facebook like. What's the significance of it?

I read an article a month ago that discusses the significance of being liked in Facebook. It shows that for each 10 likes, there's a chance that it will be read 3 times by their friends. Now, I'm trying to find that article again because I want to re-read it.Please if anyone knows the article, please point it to me.Thanks

Re:How can I set up a financial credit card payment? on Saturday February 13, 2010 @03:52AM (#1122762)
thanks. ill find another.

How can I set up a financial credit card payment?

Hi,I want to set up a shopping website, I want users to pay me monthly. It depends on the chosen service plan. For example, if the user bought item A for $1500, the user can choose how many months they want to pay it. how can I make sure that the user will not cheat it, and stick to the contract? Because I'm afraid that I may go to bankruptcy if they cheat it.They might cheat their credit cards...

Re:Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter is a gift to Google on Wednesday April 22, 2009 @10:26PM (#574962)
That was dumb. Now people have more reason to choose Linux-based Laptops.
You should really consider free membership with less features.

Google actually did just that. They didn't engage any marketing activities on their early days.

This is Hacker News, you are free to do that. It inspires us actually.

This is why I go back to Hacker News everytime. I list the reasons again: 1) Because bunch of smart guys hang over here. 2) There's just so much to learn especially on starting a startup, this is one topic that I love because it teaches us something. 3) Because of PG.

And I think this topic teaches everyone of us something worth posting here in HN.

Your wife has some associated bias. I totally agree with them, you can increase your revenue like 5 times if you just made that clearer.

But I guess you have some point since I'm guessing that the Edu website gets noticed not because of Web search but word of mouth of teachers. And probably the teachers who spread this website to other teachers have well explained the product's features enough already.

But If you just upgrade the clarity of your site. The web searcher won't get trouble and know your site's purpose immediately.

Re:Are mutts like me welcome on HN? on Wednesday December 31, 2008 @03:57AM (#415315)
You honorably recognize your talents and achievements. But you still start a topic asking your candidacy?

Then what label can you give me? I'm not an aerospace engineer, I'm not a serial entrepreneur, and I'm sure as hell that I would never build an electronic passenger car.

Everyone is welcome here. We humans are extraordinarily curious beings, curiosity & willingness to explore is the main reason why we kept visiting this site.

Re:The makings of a media mogul: Michael Arrington of TechCrunch on Thursday December 25, 2008 @11:38PM (#409953)
TechCrunch posts more than 5+ articles now. I read tons of news everyday, from HN, RSS reader, TC, OM..

But kudos for making the story short and concise everytime, it is what makes me come back to TC. Because they go straight to the point. Unlike GigaOM, they have long posts.

And, the cool thing about reading TC is you see some drama happening. You remember when Mark Cuban got angry and expressed his feeling in TC? How bout the debacle of DEMO? We watched how Michael Arrington brought down DEMO!!

This is what news should be! Excitement + Wisdom + Humour
