Re:What I learned solo bootstrapping 8 software products on Sunday December 01, 2024 @06:36AM (#42287849)
appreciate it! honestly that's a questions heaps of people ask me and I don't have a direct answer to it (yet). I'm not a designer and also not a developer. I taught myself how to code because I wanted to make cool apps and I taught myself design because I loved how some apps "stand out" and the rest just looks like Microsoft Office 1996.

When I say taught myself design what I actually mean is just observing people/companies that do great design for years. It's all about training your eyes to differentiate what looks "good" vs bad or in other words developing "taste".

For years every time I come across a website or any design really I like I bookmark it and give it specific attributes about what I like and dislike. I have hundreds of bookmarks on Dribbble, X, the web, instagram etc. Do this long enough and you start to create patterns of ideas in your head. It's almost like I already know what kind of design my next project should look like, I'm just waiting for the right project opportunity to apply it if that makes any sense.

One really often overlooked advice I could give is to take design inspiration from things outside your specific use case. If you are building a web-based SaaS, simply also taking inspiration from mobile apps helps you make better designs already. I would go even further and look at music album covers, IG ads, museum artefacts you name it.

While writing this I realize that perhaps the single most important thing to making "good" designs is being passionate about it. I love coding and I genuinely love coming up with designs for my projects. It's perhaps going the little extra mile that it takes. Hope that helps a little!

Dom from the video here. Fair point. Let me TLDR the lessons:

• Launch early and iterate • Passion matters • Market before launch • Product-founder fit • No marketing, no customers • Repurpose failed projects • Curation sells • Digital products take time • Side projects don’t need profit and keep you motivated • Swim with trends • Growth takes time • Iterate relentlessly • B2B > B2C for bootstrappers • Scratch your own itch • Great ideas come from problems

There's def. some truth to this. Wonder when that trend will be over.

Absolutely rekt, haha! I don't know at all what you are talking about.

Thanks Alex! Appreciate it. I am usually a big critique of AI as a buzzword trend as well but I really think this is a fitting use case for it.

Hi HN! One of the most carefully crafted apps I have seen in a while. I am good friends with both founders and I have seen how much time and love they put into this new version.
Re:Show HN: Vue-Notion – An unofficial Notion renderer on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @07:58AM (#25505780)
This is probably the best pre-christmas present so far. Have been waiting for quite some time for someone to finally adapt it from the react version. Great job and thank you so much for taking your time. Played around with it a little bit and everything seems smooth
Thanks! Are you talking about the corner rounding on the iPhone screen preview? Could you please be a little bit more specific? Which browser/device/environment are you using?
Oh. I will look into this issue.
Great idea!
Yea. 100% agree with you. I will fix this asap.
That is a great idea! Thank you. I will take a closer look at it and reach back to you if necessary.
Thanks for pointing it out! Appreciate the effort
Hi. Thank you for the feedback! I will take a closer look at it.
Thank you for your feedback! I tested it on Mac OSX on Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera. What system/browser are you using?
Thank you! Appreciate it
Thanks for pointing out the typo! It should be updated now.
Oh yeah. You are definitely right about that. I was just used to my well-known Macbook's monitor. You learned me a valuable lesson. Especially the pricing should be perfectly readable.

I just increased the font size of the dot. What do you think? Is it still hard to read?

Thanks for the feedback! Do you have more information on this for me? I do not see a reason why it should be against their ad policy. I am not aware of any ads that are driving traffic to it. Furthermore, the whole copy of the site clearly states that it is a previewer.
Thanks @gerardnll for pointing it out. It is actually 4.99$. Was this a mistake or did you encounter this weird number rendered somewhere? In what environment did you encounter it?
Thanks for the feedback. Quite some people noticed this. Due to the current layout - you can only properly view and work with it on desktop screen sizes. That is why I decided to put the popup there. What solution what you think would suit better? I am eager to improve it asap.
Hey hackers, the creator here.

StorePreviewer is a developer tool that helps you optimize and preview your app's copy and screenshots on the App Store without the need for publishing it live or other any other design tools.

It is built on vue.js, tailwind css and some components from Element UI. In order to move things fast and ship this MVP I decided to just use a single index.html with vue's cdn.

Would love to hear more feedback from you!

P.S I launched it today on PH: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/storepreviewer

Re:Show HN: Filmtypes – Explore the world of analog film on Tuesday September 03, 2019 @06:01PM (#20871672)
Well, while this approach would make it much clearer it is unfortunately also very unfeasible to do. Neither a photo api would give those details nor would it be possible to aggregate all those information by hand for each film. Thanks for your input!

Thanks! I will take a look at it!
