Re:Facts about throwing good parties on Monday November 03, 2025 @12:04AM (#45796021)
Go make some friends.

I invite people to events almost every time I go out and talk to people.

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025) on Monday May 26, 2025 @02:29AM (#44094570)
Most of what I'm working on ends up being social clubs.

Tech Pizza Mondays has been going well, as the Toronto HN meetup. If you're reading this on HN, you're welcome to join us -> URL Mondays.Pizza details on fedi.

We just finished Toronto's Pizza Day, our fifth year in a row and most successful so far. toronto.pizzadao.xyz will eventually get updated to next year's event invite.

I threw a fun experimental comedy party, and I plan to throw another in August. Having a volunteer cast was great, the clown burlesque was shockingly great. I hope to find some team members who want to join forces and put on the greatest talent show this town has ever seen!

Working on founding a school in Toronto has been very difficult, feels like I'm making zero real progress over time. If anyone cares deeply about education, I'd be happy to talk. I'm extremely enthusiastic about the Sudbury Valley School model.

And this last week I started a fitness club, where most weekdays we do strength training with giant wooden swords. Looking for people who want to join up and get strong and have fun!

This is an invitation to you - our Monday evening social group is ready to add a new member or two.We have been meeting in Toronto every Monday for a couple years now, and it has been a really nice consistent part of life. We focus on thoughtful conversation, usually centered around using technology for a better life and a better world. There's no corporate sponsor to mess up the vibe, and any...

Very interesting! Thank you for this

The comparison is direct and apt, as a comment on a story about devices delivered with hostile software on them.

From a consumer POV, they are indistinguishable, are they not?

At least third party malware works silently and efficiently. First party hateware puts ads in the start menu.

This is a wild take that actually makes too much sense.

I agree, let's do it!

Even something as simple at 'eating pizza' is enough of a frame to be useful
Re:The state of open-source in 3D printing in 2023 on Sunday April 02, 2023 @03:43AM (#35408175)
ZSA has some openness in their software, but their hardware (and it is a hardware company) is closed.

That's part of the reason why my ZSA gear is gathering dust in silence, but my Prusa gear runs 24 hours a day and everyone who will listen knows about it.

Principles matter.

Re:The state of open-source in 3D printing in 2023 on Sunday April 02, 2023 @03:24AM (#35408074)
I bought a MK3S+&Enclosure this year instead of 5 clones. I'll be buying a MK4 and an XL, again instead of 15 chinesium clone machines.

Free Openness, reliability, trustworthiness - that's what I paid a multiple for.

Joseph puts his name on every machine, every spool of filament. I trust that if and when something goes wrong, it's his neck on the line to make it right.

I welcome a newer, stronger, toothier approach to Free and Open hardware and software.

If that means a patent trust, or a consortium for enforcement, or whatever collaboration between large players can become, it would be great if this could be the catalyst.

I have heard first hand from trans hires that they KNOW their job is to 'be diverse', and there's no reason to grow technically or professionally - just coast and fail to get fired.

Everyone reasonable hates that shit.

You conclusion for your second point seems to include a lot of unstated assumptions.

Which principles do you think are at play?

Re:Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate? on Saturday January 01, 2022 @11:06PM (#29765720)
I applaud you, but it sounds like this isn't really a 'startup'.

Who will pay for this? I imagine the recipients aren't rich.

Looking forward to seeing your announcement of a fund to deliver these charitably at zero cost to patients. :)

Good luck!

I have a piece I'd like to submit for your first batch :) http://petroff.ryan.gitlab.io/ethkeyscape/

I made it to be a demonstrative answer to the question "If you randomly generate your keys on your computer, couldn't anyone just randomly generate the same keys?"

I second the name "The Release"

RFP coordination systems to solve this mess

I'm asking as coordinator of Moonshot Collective, where our mission is to build coordination tools. We have builders standing by for exactly this - please give me ideas so I can give them to my teams to build.

What are your ideals for these solutions? What are the best solutions you've seen?

I have a Pinephone on order and MMS is my one final checkbox too. I actually planned to get my hands dirty checking it off.

Now that this has some attention, what can people like me and other readers do to help you get this over the finish line?

(thank you!)

I know this isn't the feedback you asked for, but I'm a Ryan and I want an amulet: text.bargains
