News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The author seems to be some kind of weirdo, fantasizing about "totalitarianism" while meaning reasonable Covid measures. The addendum about this renders the software non-free.

I wouldn't trust this software, as much as I wouldn't trust software from QAnon, Putin or North Korea.

Re:I Became a Conservative on Sunday October 09, 2022 @12:48AM (#33138344)
This article is just bs. The author was never "left" or anything like that. It is written from an conservative point of view what left thinking is like, like "feel bad for being white". Anyone that was ever concerned with racial discrimination does know that it isn't about making you feel bad because you're white. It is the conservative and alt-right side that tells you "The SJWs want you to feel bad because you're white".

So, the whole post is just a fictional conservative "Hey, let's make up a story about a leftist SJW female who suddenly became conservative". But they didn't get it right.

Ask HN: Should SysAdmin Day Be Renamed to “DevOps Day”?

SysAdmin seems like a term from long time ago, where admins mounted hardware in 19" racks, installed cables and were typically found in a dark room with tons of hardware pieces, sitting in front of a display with an terminal and installing a Linux distro manually.Today's admin work (if you can call it still "admin work") is completely different: Writing YAML code for your automation tools,...

Climate and weather change are scientific facts, nothing to discuss about it as long as you are not a climate scientist and have other facts (I don't mean "alternative facts").

If you think, that nonsensical conspiracy theories should be regarded as an equal opinion to facts, then you won't be happy in many countries. Well, maybe in Russia.

I didn't catalig anyone. Do you know that the quote sign (") stands for quotes?
Re:Vim 9 will be dedicated to Sven Guckes on Monday February 21, 2022 @01:21PM (#30418934)
There are more, see comment of sneak. A lot of people knew, that he was a "problematic" guy. He was kicked out of a hackerspace in Berlin after he harassed a young girl. The fact that she is still affected by this incident after 10 years shows that this wasn't a minor issue.
Re:Vim 9 will be dedicated to Sven Guckes on Monday February 21, 2022 @01:01PM (#30418660)
He was well known as an open source evangelist and as a helpful guy.

But he was also known as "sexual predator" who harassed young, underaged girls, see https://twitter.com/twena/status/1495537875651371012

I don't know if it is appropriate to make a dedication to someone like this.

Re:OpenVi: Portable OpenBSD vi for Unix systems on Saturday February 19, 2022 @06:39AM (#30396347)
Yes, and also vim and other vi clones. But what is the point of having a secure and integrated OS if you have to pull software from ports (which are not so thoroughly audited and tested as the main OS)?

One point of using BSD is (so the BSD people say) to have an operating system where everything comes from the same team - kernel and userland, unlike Linux where kernel and userland comes from dozens if not hundreds of different origins. But if you start to use arbitrary ports in BSD your OS is not much better than Linux in that regard

Re:OpenVi: Portable OpenBSD vi for Unix systems on Saturday February 19, 2022 @03:51AM (#30395503)
Last time I checked OpenBSD's vi didn't support utf8 - this is a show stopper in 2022.
Re:LXC vs. Docker on Friday February 18, 2022 @03:43PM (#30390796)
LXC is quite different from Docker. Docker is used most of the time as an containerized package format for servers and as such is comparable to snap or flatpak on the desktop. You don't have to know Linux administration to use Docker, that is why it is so successfull.

LXC on the other hand is lightweight virtualization and one would have a hard time to use it without basic knowledge of administering Linux.

Re:Maps.me is gone, and we must bring it back on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @03:18AM (#25515579)
There is already an open source fork at F-Droid:

https://f-droid.org/de/packages/com.github.axet.maps/

Note: This is not new. F-Droid maintains this open source version since serveral years.

Re:Open-Sourced and Community-Driven RHEL Fork by CloudLinux on Thursday December 10, 2020 @10:09AM (#25374435)
This makes now two designated CentOS successors, after the announcement of Rocky Linux from the original CentOS founder.

I wonder if they consider to join forces?

Re:Ask HN: Losing all interest in programming, what now? on Thursday December 10, 2020 @09:59AM (#25374307)
Sounds like burnout to me. Take a break, do other things (that have nothing to do with computers), change your job situation.
