> Linode is a good example of how we're different. As per my knowledge, you can have your own kernel, that's true, but you need to make a special request to support & then wait for them to modify your server. It's not included out of the box.

Nope you just compile it yourself set up grub right and choose 64bit or 32bit pv-grub for your kernel

Re:Rate My Startup: Xen VPS Hosting on Monday February 07, 2011 @08:20PM (#2191523)
It wasn't just the popup for me it was the stock photos that turned me off (you have a bunch of suited guys and gals on the about page but scroll down to what looks like comments of all guys names and descriptions.

Linode and prgmr give you pretty much full access unless you are somehow offering something else?

Some tips for your homepage, get rid of that popup it is the bane of many internet users. Maybe show some pictures of your admin if it looks alright, and stay away from stock photos. State where the hell your servers are located.

Re:Rate My Startup: Xen VPS Hosting on Monday February 07, 2011 @05:29PM (#2191054)
Why don't you offer 32bit OSs especially considering that all your servers are under 4gb ram
Re:Getting Comfortable With SSH on Saturday February 05, 2011 @01:12PM (#2183564)
If you are going to go the terminal way with ssh-agent I highly recommend using keychain (http://www.funtoo.org/en/security/keychain/intro/ ) which is quite easy to setup and use, and much easier than having to do ssh-add and so on every time you want to use a specific key.
Re:Microsoft has just registered bi.ng on Saturday February 05, 2011 @10:20AM (#2183213)
I'd be willing to guess that for the amount of money microsoft probably payed they got special treatment.
Re:Ask HN: Gmail for business - someone using my domain ???!!! on Friday February 04, 2011 @05:07PM (#2181478)
I think you can reset the administrative password using an html file or dns record to verify you own the domain.

Just go to www.google.com/a/zionadvisors.com and click can't access your account.

I personally would do this and delete the account and then wait the 10 (or so) days it makes you wait to re-register it

Re:RPN Ever 4 on Thursday February 03, 2011 @06:31PM (#2177498)
One of the sad things though is that hp has really declined in quality calculators, if you look around you'll find quite a few problems regarding accuracy in the new 35s close to critical values. (Though they may have updated the software version since my purchase a few years ago)

I do like my giant hp50g for anything that doesn't need matlab though, and the 35s is still pretty good despite its errors (especially since I know where the errors exist).

Re:Ask HN: Is 26 too old to start a startup? on Thursday February 03, 2011 @04:16PM (#2176857)
Speaking from a younger persons point of view: what about being 26 would make you worse than say a 21 year old at starting a startup?

If you are supporting other people it may be quite a bit harder but if you are basically only supporting yourself I would see age as an advantage as you have more experience in dealing with problems and more solutions available.

Age to me seems like a silly thing to prevent you from starting a business it is the other things in like that should be taken into consideration.

Re:Sublime Text 2: Public Alpha Released on Friday January 28, 2011 @08:02PM (#2154171)
I thought arch moved to python 3 for /usr/bin/python so maybe that is causing the issue?

Re:Ask HN: Am I learning Python the right way? on Tuesday January 25, 2011 @10:17PM (#2141977)
This is kind of interesting: http://www.pythonchallenge.com/

I started out with python doing project euler (http://projecteuler.net/) though that really won't give you that good of a background in python for the web and I mostly learned by going through the tutorial on the python website and going through the docs.

If you want a book I think apress begginning python is among the more recommended books after you have started out, and for the sake of time and your wallet avoid oreily's python books as they are about 700 pages over length.

You might want to give the Python Essential Reference a try instead as it is quite a good reference and something like the first 6 chapters are a nice quick tutorial, though it probably is more high level than you want (probably read it in a store first).

The django book (http://www.djangobook.com/) is available for free and is good for learning the internals though it can be a bit dry and there a some screencasts for django around if you look.

Hopefully that helps.

Well that kind of portrays a different kind of hacker (the hats) than what the emblem I linked is for.

There is this: http://catb.org/hacker-emblem/

You see it around a bit.

Re:Anyone else really, really lazy? on Monday January 24, 2011 @09:42PM (#2137748)
Try structuring yourself to a schedule, start off easy with things you can manage and move to a stricter and stricter schedule.

The best way to develop a habit is to practice that habit, it won't happen right away but if you can dedicate yourself it will happen.

Re:eBooks compiled from top StackOverflow topics/answers on Sunday January 23, 2011 @09:37PM (#2134020)
I don't own an ipad but mobi is pretty popular and easily converted so there should be an app to view them if the apple book app doesn't work.

Otherwise you can use calibre to convert it to epub.

(Kindle app might do it if it can load books as mobi is native kindle format)

I don't understand, what is the posterous of customer support?
Re:Get Ruby and Rails running on Ubuntu with one command on Friday January 21, 2011 @02:21PM (#2128506)
Is rvm commonly used for production or just development environments? I can see where having a script to get your production (or testing) environment up and running with minimal user work would be useful, but if this is meant for just development I agree with your point.
Re:Ask HN: Strongest way to block distracting sites? on Thursday January 20, 2011 @12:03AM (#2122718)
In your hosts file add:

    127.0.0.1 news.ycombinator.com
    127.0.0.1 other.distracting.site
    ...etc
Windows, Linux, MacOS all have a hosts file if you don't know where it is google it real quick. Editing a file is pretty annoying for me especially if the file requires admin rights, I think mac has a few distraction apps (google should probably find some) and windows/linux probably do too.

Disciplining yourself with a timer reward system may work well for some people (1 hour working, 10 minutes web browsing set to an egg timer).

Ask HN/PG: Why are comments being paginated?

Is this a new experiment or is it a new permanent thing to reduce load, I don't think many people are going to be looking at the lower end of the spectrum (clicking more) which may detract from interesting comments and conversations.Examples: look on the front page with comment threads >~30

Re:Dog learns over 1,000 words on Monday January 17, 2011 @11:40PM (#2114627)
It is so interesting when you have a smart dog to see how they learn. My dog responds really well to hand commands compared to other dogs I have owned but voice commands usually only work so well except as a supplement.

There are a large amount of interesting things she responds to other than simple commands but I can't say she has a human type of intelligence or even close but there is definite problem solving ability (such as opening cabinet doors, the refrigerator, and even pushing the sliding glass door open by standing up on it and moving her paws).

If you aren't using a mouse use something that can open in new tabs like vimperator and conkeror can or use control click. (usually ctrl-shift click to open focused which I think is the default in opera)

Some browsers let you set that as the default action for all links as well

Re:Hack Week at Dropbox on Thursday January 13, 2011 @06:45PM (#2101830)
Not that I know of but google sync manages it quite well for smartphones (though it is syncing it to a gmail account and not dropbox).
Re:Mozilla Exec: Firefox 4 Will Arrive in February on Wednesday January 12, 2011 @11:01PM (#2098805)
Thing is I like to customize some things and sometimes I do that by writing an extension and adding such and such so using other browsers at the same time becomes harder.

I use chrome now because it starts up fast and I have all the things I like, if firefox started up faster and had similar window freedom (last I checked linux wasn't as lucky as windows) I would switch back. The update thing was just a nitpick that if I could see changes happening over time rather than one huge update it would entice me back.

I think it is fine, but if you can't get both (29fish and twentyninefish) you might want to consider the latter.

It is more likely though that a person would type 29 over twentynine just over the shear size of the word, same goes for things like 103 and such, but thirty could easily be typed.

Sorry if that came off rambly but the size of the number typed will matter and you most definitily don't want something like 2fish.com if you can't get twofish.com but 103fish.com if you can't get it spelled out would be fine it is going to depend on the size of number word typed.

Re:Mozilla Exec: Firefox 4 Will Arrive in February on Wednesday January 12, 2011 @09:00PM (#2098515)
I think I would be more likely to move back to firefox if they changed to a release cycle more like chromes where small features are added in pretty quickly through silent updates, rather than big changes over large amounts of time. Probably a little offtopic but I was looking forward to trying the new firefox as my main browser when it was supposed to release about now.
Re:A Comfy Helvetica frontpage for Hacker News on Wednesday January 12, 2011 @08:55PM (#2098506)
In the footer the google (site:...) one is there, but no one ever checks the footer and it is just a link.

I think that it was put there after the previous big complaint thread about search but it hasn't helped any and the best way to search is still searchyc.
