Re:What Tech Workers Don't Understand They've Lost by WFH on Friday August 12, 2022 @02:57AM (#32435387)
Woof. I don't want to upset you, but I don't think I've ever disagreed more with a written argument than I did with this one. It sounds like maybe you (and perhaps those in your social circle) have some very specific problems with being accountable and responsible, but in 35+ years of work I've never once had to have the "feeling of being watched" to "feel accountable" or be "pushed to work." I work and focus because I take pride in my professionalism - I don't need a "focus buddy" to keep me on task.

I wish I could say I was more surprised by the items you raised, but I've noticed that there is certainly a large contingent of EVERY workforce that seems to suffer from an inability to take any kind of pride in themselves or their work, and unfortunately, those of us who ARE able to focus on work tasks during work hours have been trapped in the "butts in seats" paradigm for decades as a result of those individuals. I'm glad to see the market finally correcting itself.

If it's just about the statement "Earning your trust is my most important interpersonal goal", why include the remainder of the comment? If it's not part of your commentary, why reference it all? You've already seen fit to elide most of the rest of the profile - your thinly-veiled attempts to publically shame him for his Christianity are as shameful as your verbal diarrhea while pontificating that the only IMAGINABLE reasons for collecting telemetry are because he's going to sell the data.

Collecting telemetry is a decades-old method of getting real data about the behaviour of a program in real-world environments. This is why web browsers, smartphones, and OSes all have telemetry collection routines.

> I think trying to frame something you give away to everyone, always, without anyone asking for it can legally be framed as privacy sensitive information. That would simply be absurd…The GDPR is not insane. Chill.

Isn't it? Just one particularly absurd example: logging IP addresses in your httpd's access logs can be considered a violation of GDPR. [1][2][3]

My question is, at what point does it become incumbent on the language to provide a more meaningful idiom for this kind of expression? I think the point at which constructs like this leak into your official documentation is a pretty good line to start thinking about it. :)
