Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:38PM (#50277613)
I've had a touch screen Lenovo for 10 years. It was a huge mistake and I never use it. It's uncomfortable and doesn't work with laptop interfaces or form factor.

All the cons are real (which Apple figured out in the aughts), but enshittification at a corporate bureaucracy is inevitable without a strong person in charge.

Re:I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken on Saturday October 03, 2026 @10:57AM (#49944867)
It was pretty clear from the outside what OpenAI was 3.5 years ago.

If it wasn’t clear, the coup should have solidified it.

Yet he stayed for 3 more years and vested his stock and improved the company and then spoke out.

I believe that is why most of the comments here are mocking him.

Re:Burning Man Death Rates – A Short Lesson in Statistics on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:53PM (#49912182)
It's good to give any sort of thing you're going to climb at the burn a bit of a once over and think about failure modes and worst cases before going on.

In 2018 there was a tower of cars on a spike. [1][2]

One of the cars bent in half (turns out cars aren't design to be supported by a stake in the middle but instead on their two axles. Who would have guessed).

Climbing was closed for the rest of the week.

In 2016 there was a giant boar you could climb on that swiveled at the base and head. There were rumors going around of severed fingers. Surprisingly (or not) it was welded stationary mid-week. [3][4]

Re:Waymo in Singapore on Friday September 18, 2026 @12:31AM (#49750214)
Singapore has the potential to be the first country to eliminate the private ownership of vehicles.
I had to give this thought, but yes.

I could use Tor or Google from the library if I wanted. Maybe I would accidentally leak my paper trail, like the Dread Pirate Roberts (Ross Ulbricht) did. But it was possible.

The AI systems require an account.

So we're creating a system where people who can afford their own hardware can speak to AI freely but the plebes will be monitored by the elites for any attempted uprising?
By allowing the monitoring of AI conversations, we are creating a dystopian world where essentially all recorded or spoken thought is monitored (given that AI has or will have access to almost all conversations).

Is this the world we want to live in?

This is dangerous. I think of talking to an LLM like playing a game - it's a complex system and it's fun to mess with it and role play.

Taking what somebody says in an LLM chat as the truth and using it in the real world is a slippery slope. The fears about thought crime are real.

It’s interesting that the private supermarkets (TJs, HEB) seem to both follow this happy and overstaffed model, and the public ones (Kroger, Albertsons/Safeway) do the opposite.

Albertson’s adds insult to injury by overcharging for everything. Tomato? $4.99/lb please.

Re:Mmorpg World of ClaudeCraft, vibe coded with Fable 5 on Friday June 12, 2026 @06:05PM (#48509989)
The plans have weekly limits, but are charged monthly. So this is actually only about ~$45.
Re:US Consumer Price Index up 4.2% on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @01:00PM (#48479266)
Also is having twice as much money (1x from interest and 1x from income) not a benefit?

Maybe you are the strawman consumer that skeptics point to in guaranteed basic income debates, who just stops working because they get a check.

It's this sort of mentality and the prolitferation of passive investing that gives these companies the opportunity to pass the bag.
Re:Training our own AI models on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @12:39PM (#48296799)
Defaults matter.

Opt-in vs opt-out organ donorship has a large impact.

Most people on any web app won’t stray from the defaults.

Re:Waymo in Portland on Tuesday April 28, 2026 @03:04PM (#47939006)
I drove up there in the AM Thursday, Feb 18th, during the snowstorm, about an hour before they closed the pass for the rest of the day.

You couldn't see anything. As soon as there wasn't a car 20 yards in front of you, it was a complete whiteout. Ice built up on the wiper as quickly as you could possibly reach out of your window and clear it. Radar would probably be nice, but I don't think it'd be enough to keep driving. The cameras and lidar would be an absolute wreck.

I'm sure we'll get there eventually, but that is really the final frontier for AI driving I think. Waymos aren't even allowed to drive in a snowstorm right now. I suspect that you'll be dealing with Caltrans closing the pass for the rest of your life.

Odd how nobody ever builds a balloon to fly towards the communist utopias.

Re:Contrails Map on Saturday December 20, 2025 @04:59AM (#46334930)
They don’t cause net warming, it’s transient. If we stopped flying tomorrow it would go away quickly. But we keep flying.

But even with that the amount of warming this continuous effect creates is quite small and negligible compared to greenhouse gas warming and isn’t really worth talking about.

Re:Canada's Carney called out for 'utilizing' British spelling on Tuesday December 16, 2025 @01:27PM (#46292280)
Thanks for clarifying. I'm American and I had never heard of practise in my life.
I had paid $150 or so for a extra legroom seat (on lufthansa). They did some last minute tomfoolery and my seat changed on my phone as I boarded the plane.

I was now not even in a premium economy row, but just a normal seat. I tried telling the flight attendant, who gave no shits - she just said "the plane isn't full, sit anywhere when we are in the air."

Fine, I found a premium economy aisle (still no extra legroom exit row seat, but whatever), and then filed for a refund when I landed.

They responded to my request for a refund with a form letter apologizing, but no refund. Then ignored any follow up. I had to do a charge back (no joke).

Them:

> I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to sincerely apologize for the seating issue you experienced during your recent flight. I understand that you requested an exit row seat and were not able to be accommodated, which is understandably frustrating.

> We strive to honor all seating preferences, and I regret that we were unable to meet your expectations in this instance. Please know that your feedback is important to us, and we will review our seating allocation processes to prevent similar situations in the future.

> Thank you for your understanding and patience. If there is anything further we can assist you with or if you have any other concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

> We hope that you put your trust in Lufthansa and partners also in the future and continue to fly with us.

Me: This wasn't a seating preference, I paid $130 to reserve this seat. This is something I purchased. I'd expect you'd at least issue a refund and extend me some sort of credit to make up for this.

Them: crickets

Every drink is for sale, even coffee. They aggressively use the bag sizer and try to take bags away at the gate, under the ruse that their tiny Airbus overhead bins cannot fit them (they can).
What has become much more degraded in Europe than America is the domestic flights.

Try flying Lufthansa (or one of their half dozen subsidiaries created almost entirely to give worse service) anywhere inside of europe. Everything is a money grab and the service and boarding are terrible.

United maintains a relatively consistent experience between domestic and international, minus the free alcohol.

FYI I researched this a bit. Most coffee is hand-picked, with Brazil (featured in the video), being the exception.

Brazil is generally known for mass production low quality coffee grown at a lower altitude, which might be what you find in a can like grandparent said, but is less popular in the more premium scenes.

$10/lb sounds very reasonable for a grown, hand picked, fermented, washed, dried, shipped, roasted, packaged, and delivered seed.
Re:Gemini 3 Pro: the frontier of vision AI on Friday December 05, 2025 @04:18PM (#46167447)
Super interesting. I replicated this.

I passed the AIs this image and asked them how many fingers were on the hands: https://media.post.rvohealth.io/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2...

Claude said there were 3 hands and 16 fingers. GPT said there are 10 fingers. Grok impressively said "There are 9 fingers visible on these two hands (the left hand is missing the tip of its ring finger)." Gemini smashed it and said 12.

I don’t know what you remember, but that didn’t happen to GoT. It was highly watched through the end, with increasing viewership every season.
