It was my 40th Birthday last week and I started work* at 21, in that time I have had 7 full-time tech roles. So 19 years work / 7 roles = 2.71 years per role on average. Is that similar to others? Whats your stats?*I classed work as perm full-time after university.
I run a side project called
http://moodpanda.com , people rate their mood an a simple scale and other members give feedback, I think the feeback is what keeps people coming back to our app, not the rating part but the feedback they get from others.
If you are doing it as a CV showcase type thing looking for a job I would do it in C# , why are you doing it?
nice, but one thing the logo looks a bit rubbish on my macbook pro retina
LDAP integration for weblogin
I use trello for almost everything
Wakeboarding - Get to forget about the internet for a while
Sorry about that, I was using "guys" as a generic term, but it got me thinking that in 18 years of development, I have worked with over 200 Dev Guys and only 2 Dev Girls.
I'd Hire the full stack guys first, but spend a lot of time talking with them, the first hire is always the hardest but the most important. Its also hard not to hire people like yourself so take it slow, some of the best guys I have ever worked with are mid 30 with wife and kids that just know how to get stuff done.
As a CTO you will hopefully ALWAYS have better developers than you working for you, that's the point, the CTO role is not to be the best tech guy in the room. Its the guy that sets the vision, talks to investors, sets high level tech strategy (with a lot of team involvement), hires, fires, keep sales guys away from dev's etc
Eg. sort out everything that would distract your developers from building.
And make enterprise like $499 a month, it makes the others look cheap :-)
Its quite generous with the board allotment, if it was me i would bump them all down a level and add an enterprise level.
e.g p=1, F=3, S=10, SB=30, E=150
A agree somewhat, but I've seen 10 box systems that could run on raspberry pie with good code
From working with Ruby guys its normally 1. Make it work 2. Spin up more AWS boxes
We make about $300 in donations a month over at
http://moodpanda.com , we don't do it for the money, its a good way of opening doors and getting invited to events etc.
The CTO role is completely different depending on size of company. Here is my experience.
Startups: <10
I have had roles in small start-ups as CTO, but did the role of a Lead Developer in reality, it was important to get investment that they had a CTO on board that had a track record and could talk to investors, but I still had to build everything as well. Thinking back it would have been better to get a 2 day a week CTO and a full time Lead dev.
Mid Size:10>40
In a company this size with a dev team of 10ish its more of a Development Manager Role, this is some times worst than a startup as you have to be hands on, speak to investors and run a team.
Larger:>50
This is where a real CTO can really make a different, by this size you would have a couple of functional managers as your direct reports to look after day to day and get the time to focus on culture, team, investors, new tech, presentations etc.
Does it have a lag or admin approval on the stories, i just posted a blog post and it does not show.

Disclaimer: This is my friends game and they are trying to bootstrap to get it into development, I think its a cool idea as you Play simultaneously on your PC and mobile device.
The team are super nice, hopefully we can get it to the target.

My first start-up
http://moodpanda.com gets donations that covers the hosting and runnings costs and helps hundreds of thousands of people, which is fine with me.
My brand new start-up http://crowdscore.io is targeted at mid to large business's so is going to need quite a bit of cash to get traction, I've had some early interest but I think its going to be a much harder sell than my first.
You can hack your way passed the autoparsers, just by copying the advert text into your CV on a blank page in a tiny white font :-)
Any feedback much appreciated, we have got 1 client on board in the first week so hoping that not just beginners luck :-)

In Bath/Bristol (UK), we can't get rails guys, they are as rare as hens teeth. Where are you based?
I use both, if you are looking for a dev house job go with rails as loads of dev houses are looking for rails at the moment in my Area, Bristol&Bath(England)
