Who doesn't like engineering productivity improved?Even if improved by a few percentage points, the cost savings are enormous! Here is what engineering leaders often overlook: how good is the data to support the sale pitch on cost savings?Spoiler alert: in most cases, it's not nearly good enough. Here is an example of how these engineering improvements are being sold.Researches at Stanford, a...

maybe its the boomers that can't give up Outlook? Otherwise they could've migrated everybody to google workspaces or some other web alternative.

What I don't get why nobody questions how's OS that needs all third-party shit to function and be compliant, gets into critical paths in the first place??

Tips for Consulting Leads

Hi,We're starting a consulting company, just 2 of us. Both "hardcore" practicing devops/cloud architects. We write good code and know how to coach teams, so they practice devops themselves. We want to work with new-ish startups setting them up straight on AWS and coaching dev teams how to utilize it.Or medium size companies, that got themselves into a dev mess for one reason or another. We think...

I haven't used global accelerator but it doesn't look like the same. On landing page it says: "Your traffic routing is managed manually, or in console with endpoint traffic dials and weights".
Hahaha, well this time Jessy got paged so yeah... the summary got priority over turkey.
But this time it was a _different_ dependency. They just want to make sure all dependencies are ruled out before migrating to GCP :)
What do you mean by cross-regional dependencies? Isn't running in multi-region setup is by itself adding dependency?

Speaking about multi-region services. What do you think about Google now offering all three major building pieces as multi-regional?

They have muti-regional buckets, LB with single anycast IP, document db (firebase). Pubsub can route automatically to nearest region. Nothing like this is available in amazon, well only DIY building blocks.

Dat soundz like a bank and not a cloud provider.

Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Saturday May 30, 2020 @12:13PM (#23362138)
Yeah, I've seen these resume-driven, anti-vendor-locking, everything-is-a-nail-for-kubernetes-hummer decisions :)
Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Saturday May 30, 2020 @12:10PM (#23362107)
Wait, I can do all these with s3 and lambda at any scale - for pennies :) Will probably take few hours to set everything up with tools like stackery.io

So once again, why developers need kubernetes for? If the most simple problem becomes a habitholy mess :)

Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Friday May 29, 2020 @10:04PM (#23357827)
The deal was it all abstracted :) And now developers have to start all over with subnet masks?!
Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Friday May 29, 2020 @09:50PM (#23357755)
couldn't they shovel it into dynamodb?
Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Friday May 29, 2020 @09:45PM (#23357727)
good thing kubernetes can restart pods fast and have persistent volumes!
Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Friday May 29, 2020 @08:22PM (#23357218)
I agree. It is impressive how much it can orchestrate. It is also very useless in the real cloud because developers there are dealing with higher-level abstractions to solve problems for the business.

The most simplistic task - execute some code in response to even in a bucket - makes kubernetes with all its sophisticated convergence capabilities completely useless. And even if somebody figures this out and puts the opensource project on github to do this on kubernetes - it just going to break at slightest load.

Not to mention all the work to run kubernetes at any acceptable level of security, or keep the cost down, do all patching, scaling, logging, upgrades... Oh, the configuration management itself for kubernetes? Ah sorry, I forgot, there are 17 great open-source projects exists :)

Re:Why is Kubernetes getting so popular? on Friday May 29, 2020 @08:11PM (#23357157)
Kubernetes is outstanding because proving ol bash scripts were bad and re-writing all Bash glue in Go glue, slapping 150 APIs on top (60 "new" and about hundred "old versions" https://kubernetes.io/docs/reference/generated/kubernetes-ap...), adding few dozen opensource must have projects - so finally it can be called "cloud native" - boom, a new cloud native bash for the cloud is born!
Re:Microservices on Saturday September 17, 2016 @03:01AM (#12519490)
You need almost none of that scary list to start building microservices. Lambda functions can be created in minutes, even in UI console. And they have almost everything from that scary list by default.

Lots of people are still in denial regarding microservices...

What would happen to the system when Oracle rolled out a new version or patch?
Re:What I found wrong in Docker 1.12 on Monday August 29, 2016 @11:39AM (#12382604)
k8s is essentially "aws in a box" and it's a product that locks. As soon as k8s cluster is running in GKE - it becomes not that portable at all, due to operational complexity as well as tide up to the google infra.
Re:Decommissioning Otto on Saturday August 20, 2016 @03:00AM (#12325539)
Just set remote with versioned s3 bucket, usually it's enough for insurance.

Hi Mitchell,

You guys rock! Hashicorp's tools are fantastic and pleasure to learn and use.

We're a small company and we're going to officially purchase Atlas in few weeks - because it saves tons of time. Also, every developer in our company (rather small company, where people have great flexibility what tools to use) has been cheering and clapping when we demoed CI/CD flow in Atlas. It's so easy to deploy and run services.

Cheers! Roman

Nah, who needs all these version-controlled configs?

Just look how google runs stuff! https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/tutorials/setup-joomla
