Curious about your breakdown between heavy lifting vs. cardio. I find that I can't do more than 4x/week of heavy lifting, so I've been trying to run (or something else) on the remaining 3 days.
Do you have a source? this is really interesting, would love to read more.
Actually, Nietzsche's idea of the Ubermensch is a pretty strong criticism of the fear of death.

no, i think you're spot on. it's always interplay between reading reviews, while factoring in cuisine, distance and price.

I agree. I have found that I've done best in courses where the instructor post solutions to all problems, homework, practice, and exams.

The service Magic is an instance of excellent design imo. It's scrappy, clever, simple, and most importantly, there is a very clear reason to use. I can't say the same about the many of the products he listed.

Re:Facebook use linked to depressive symptoms on Tuesday April 07, 2015 @03:57PM (#9336714)
My biggest problem is I have so many services linked to Facebook, so if I delete Facebook, I delete the other services as well (Spotify, and every other website where I lazily clicked "Sign up with Facebook").

I agree, what a bunch of horseshit.
Re:A not-so-obvious reason to apply to YC on Thursday March 19, 2015 @06:32PM (#9235017)
No. It's obvious that they are smart and talented folks that can give you a good shot at success. It isn't obvious that they are genuinely nice people.

Re:Passion Is Overrated on Sunday February 15, 2015 @12:29AM (#9051859)
It's only correct if you are following your passion to achieve some other end. If it's means based, then everything this guy says is completely wrong. Under a means based approach, you wouldn't care about great fame/recognition, because, for instance, painting everyday and being a community college arts teacher to support yourself is sufficient to make you happy.

I do agree 100% with what he says about systems vs goals.

It took me a while to realize that I was supposed to scroll. I spent like 15 seconds trying to click something. Might want to make that more obvious.
Re:Cultivated Disinterest in Professional Sports on Friday January 30, 2015 @09:29PM (#8975648)
I am always puzzled at how "high brow" people scoff at sports. There is so much to learn from athletes. MJ, Kobe, Tom Brady -- these guys have all the skill in the world, but more impressive than their skill is their incredible work ethic. I feel there's a lot to learn here.

For example, one of Kobe's conditioning trainer's had this to say:

"When I arrived and opened the room to the main practice floor I saw Kobe. Alone. He was drenched in sweat as if he had just taken a swim. It wasn’t even 5AM.

We did some conditioning work for the next hour and fifteen minutes. Then we entered the weight room, where he would do a multitude of strength training exercises for the next 45 minutes. After that we parted ways and he went back to the practice floor to shoot. I went back to the hotel and crashed. Wow."

Later on, around 11AM, the trainer sees Kobe on the court, practicing with the USA Olympic Squad, and has this conversation:

"So when did you finish?"

"Finish what?"

"Getting your shots up. What time did you leave the facility?"

"Oh just now. I wanted 800 makes so yeah, just now."

...

This is not unique to Kobe, you find stories like this with all athletes in conversation for "greatest of all time."

Secondly, there's a lot to learn from coaches as well, especially from the perspective of a startup founder. There's a reason Keith Rabois brought up the Bill Walsh's (SF 49ers coach) book, "The Score Takes Care of Itself," in the HTSAS lecture series.

Lastly, watching sports at a high level is like appreciating great art. A great backhand in tennis, a brilliant pass by a quarterback, these all have a quality of beauty about them. I feel they induce similar awe-inspiring feelings one might find in an art museum, a great music album, etc.

Re:100 Hours of Meditation in 10 Days on Monday January 12, 2015 @11:41PM (#8878177)
Yup, I have trouble doing the body scanning technique also. I recently came across Sam Harris' interview with Joseph Goldstein, who I believe himself began with Vipassana. He has a guided meditation on youtube that I found very helpful, though different from my Vipassana experiences.
