News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

robga

I'm a UK Kagi user and do not have this issue.

Perhaps it is your IP range? Do you have the same problem on mobile and broadband?

What sort of force is required to activate them, is touch enough? Do they make noise to click?
Re:Ask HN: What ING Domains did you get? on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @02:23PM (#38535682)
I have too many domains. I see amus.ing available on the lower side of prices.

Re:Booking.com hackers increase attacks on customers on Saturday December 02, 2023 @04:06AM (#38497213)
That sounds shady enough that I may have backed out.

Generally speaking though, I’ll almost always try to “book direct” once I find a hotel on booking.com or other sites unless they are more than 5% more expensive. Advantages often include:

- pay on arrival, and cancel late

- ask for late check out or early arrival when you book

- better service upon arrival

- better actual room (may be an imagined benefit)

- let’s the vendor avoid the 3rd party fee, reducing their overall expenses and this overall room rates

- sometimes much more liberal on “number of persons in room” if you’re travelling with a small child, so I just search for 2 people on booking.com then check local hotel for ability to add the kid. Works for 3rd person and sofa beds too.

- discount for repeat business. More than once a small hotel has said “please book direct next time. We can offer you a discount if you come to us”.

There isn't a lot of good evidence behind this popular conception.

If anything, the evidence is that it isn't true, see https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal...

Any apparent causality of age of acquisition seems to be a proxy of hours of exposure. It may well be that it is easier for young people to rack up a lot of exposure to a second language, but not much evidence that age plays much of a factor for people of different ages who had the same degree of exposure.

“There’s no end in sight. Electronic photography will soon be superior to anything we have now. The first advance will be the exploration of existing negatives. I believe the electronic process will enhance them. I could get superior prints from my negatives using electronics.

“Then the time will come when you will be able to make the entire photograph electronically. With the extremely high resolution and enormous control you can get from electronics, the results will be fantastic. I wish I were young again!”

What user need does encoding area in the number serve? What’s wrong with a random 8-10 digit number?

I can understand the inverse, so that you don’t have similar numbers nearby (as in RingGo).

Diseases like this typically internally spread out along the ophthalmic division of the fifth (trigeminal) cranial nerve, having breached the blood-barrier rather than the blood-ocular barrier.

The pathway is not even rare, so I wonder what is newsworthy here. e.g. 500k Americans live with herpes simplex keratitis (or “eye herpes”) though many don’t realise, and you don’t see that on HN frontpage.

I didn't watch it either. Kagi summarizer says:

- The author and his wife overheard a secret meeting between Chinese government officials and a Micronesian governor discussing help for China in an upcoming war over Taiwan.

- The meeting took place on the island of Kosrae in Micronesia.

- Recently, the president of Micronesia wrote a letter denouncing Chinese interference and recommending supporting Taiwan instead.

- Losing control of Micronesia would weaken US supply routes in Asia and force a bottleneck in supporting bases in countries like South Korea and Japan.

- The Chinese officials tried deflecting the conversation away from the recent anti-China letter.

- Local residents said China had been bribing politicians and threatening leaders who didn't cooperate.

- Other countries like Fiji and the Solomon Islands have been shifting towards China, making Micronesia's alignment more important for the US.

- The author decided to share what he witnessed with Micronesian government contacts, though the outcome of that was unclear.

- The video argues that a "cold war" is happening in the Pacific as spheres of influence are reshaped.

- Micronesia's strategic location and political alignment will impact stability in the region.

I applied a few months ago. Last week I received an email:

“We’re pleased to let you know that we’re expanding access to the Claude API.

As the next step in considering your application, we’ll need some further information from you. Please fill out our onboarding form.”

The form seems to be the same form I filled in months before. I’ve not heard back in the 7 days since.

Re:RSS can be used to distribute all sorts of information on Monday November 20, 2023 @03:59AM (#38345092)
It sounds interesting but I use https://hnrss.github.io/

Unless it had most of the features of hnrss.org I would not be able to use it.

A /topic or /category feature on hnrss.org may be nice. They accept some PRs.

Mastodon has inbuilt rss feeds for every user, for any given hashtag on an instance, etc.

Eg https://mastodon.social/@gargron.rss

Re:Ancient Tree Inventory on Monday November 20, 2023 @03:02AM (#38344277)
It’s a shame to see such important data, much submitted by the public to this charity, somewhat locked away. No API or downloadable dataset but to their credit you can apply for access: “The Ancient Tree Inventory dataset is available upon request. If you would like to access the data please get in touch.” I can imagine all sorts of great visualisation and insight within the data.

An ergonomic chair (Hag Capisco). Fixed back/leg pain.

Yes, the vicious lawsuit by chiropractors may have been enough to turn him off publishing. I sometimes hear him as a radio guest. It seems he went on to work on STEM policy and founded a couple of educational math paths. It’s a shame he seems to have discarded his website.

I thought the point was the post incident phone could have been placed in the bag in case of flare up, rather than require an attendant with an extinguisher?
Re:This is what the year actually looks like (2018) on Thursday October 19, 2023 @05:18AM (#37940433)
I see it as a 3d object ala the Menologium Rusticum Colotianum. This way you get the cycle, the split into 4 quarters, and a sequence view per month. You can see an image at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CIL_VI_2305_-_Menolo...
It looks like they sell a "400 hour fast build kit" https://bydanjohnson.com/thinking-about-2022-check-out-skyle...

Of course, they may build much of it out of country.

I run several self built Air Gradients on ESPHome and they do not connect to the cloud - or any external service. Works well with HA. Rock solid for 2+ years. I have to reboot them every 6-9mo or so if they “freeze”.
